The mental health solution by the right will be more church. On a side note. At our Memorial Day parade today. A biker group comes thru. One of them has an American flag with the words Trump and something about the 2A and right to bear arms. Totally inappropriate. There was was a plane flying overhead advertising a local auto sales company. Not a new car place but they have lots of ads in the area. Equally as tacky. Selling or promotional items either w business or candidate is wrong for Memorial Day activities.3 points

probably not Schoops choice - it's the 'contact' play, and I generally dislike it.2 points

If the states continue to ossify politically, basically split right down the middle between red states and blue states, I don’t see how we could ever got another constitutional amendment passed.2 points

Looks like we are going to go for a handgun freeze. https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/national-handgun-freeze-key-feature-of-new-firearm-control-bill-1.5923922 I think that this is smart. If you legally own a handgun (one of my neighbours has a .45, I probably didn't say that correctly) then by all means keep it and enjoy yourself but you are its last owner. I think that this will sail through Parliament, the Liberals and the NDP by themselves will carry it, and I will be interested to see how many Conservatives will oppose it. We do have a low-IQ zone here in Canada, it is called Alberta, but even there I don't think that the gun nuts have a critical mass. Even so, a Conservative MP from Alberta probably has no choice but to vote against this bill, but Conservatives elsewhere in the country would be taking a big chance. My opinion anyway. Note also that long guns, those which are not already banned, will be limited to a 5-shot capacity. I am glad that the speechwriters included this obvious truth: other than target shooting and hunting there is no good reason for having a gun.1 point

Honest question: can you sign a guy who is currently on a major league contract to a minor league contract? Without googling even once, I’m guessing you can’t. The major league contract is still force because they’re still paying him. A new team would take on the major league contract and pay him the minimum, but can they then stash him in the minors until needed? Minor league options don’t apply to a six-plus-year guy, do they?1 point

Scooper could get the cycle with a Home Run today. Come on Javy - just a base hit here, stop swinging for the fence every time. Javy is broken.1 point

First reactions: There are names beyond Cobb-Crawford-Mullin from 1900-1915 who I should know more about, like Kid Elberfield and Matty McIntyre. And surely Donnie Bush is the most forgotten, underrated star in Tigers history, no? Sadly, no change to top 15 since 1996 except for insertion of Miggy. Not even McAuliffe, Parish or Lemon displaced1 point

TBH, I'm basically agnostic about it. As I've written I don't think there is any chance of even another amendment passing in the next 15 years or so. None of the latest proposals I've seen have any real traction. I spent my formative years in Virginia, so Jefferson is close to my political and philosophical thoughts a lot. I believe he was a good philosopher, showed a varied interest in new and marvel ideas especially considering his inventions and attempts to bring new agricultural products to Virginia. His religious freedom statute was probably his greatest document, and is ignored by many so called christians today. (I call myself a back pew Presbyterian). My wife was one of the first coed undergraduates at UVa and we've spent a bit of time there. I don't believe he or any other politician of the 17th century should be judged solely on 20 or 21st century believes. He was a man of the times, not a deity. He inherited Sally Hemings from his late wife (they were half sisters, and basically a surrogate to her daughters after she died). Who knows what arrangements Jefferson and Hemings made other that his agreeing to free their offspring. The fact that Virginia law did not recognize freed slaves may have played into the picture since he did free on of Hemings brothers while living at Monticello. (The man bought his freedom)1 point

It's sad to me that they repeatedly blame mental illness and yet won't do anything about it. And that's a generous assessment. You can argue they actively make situations worse by defunding existing programs that address mental illness. I believe Abbot had recently done this. I'm not sure the extent "mental illness" plays in mass shootings and/or gun violence. But I do think we have a serious deficiency in policy regarding mental illness in this country and I welcome improvements in this space. Because they say "mental illness" and in best case assessment, do nothing about it, repeatedly - leads me to believe it's nothing but a bluff or a distraction.1 point

I'm very much not in favor of our laws being beholden to compromises from 300 years ago meant to protect slavery. I also very much am not in favor of considering what people conjure up and call "the founding fathers' intentions" in legal jurisprudence. I also think the dudes that wrote it would say we overrate them.1 point

Rewriting the Constitution would require intelligent, thoughtful persons. Unfortunately there aren't very many of them around today willing to take on the task.1 point
-
Re-writing the constitution probably would require an overthrow, but I think the opening post was making a philosphical argument rather than advocating a coup. I think the point is that the country has changed so much that parts of the constitution may not be as relevant today as they were 235 years ago.1 point
-
When Constitutions change around the world, it is after an overthrow. Yes, advocating scrapping the constitution is advocating an overthrow of the system. It's radical: on-par with the sentiments of the Jan 6 crew.1 point

Christin Stewart was on pace for 40 HR's at Erie a few years back, and people were wondering what the Eastern League record was. It was in the low 40's I think but I do remember the owner: Rick Lancelotti, who was a 4A guy a long time ago. His name has sort of a Jim Adduci vibe to it, as well as that whole Lancelot thing.1 point
