He told a great story about heckling that I'm sure was shared here. A guy was harassing him in the bullpen, this might have been in Colorado, and Todd sent him a ball and a $10 bill and a note saying "Here's a ball, go get a hot dog and a beer". The fan sent it back with a $20 bill and said "I'm rich, I can buy by own hot dog. You still suck"2 points

I was at that game. It was Labor Day. Doug Strange also hit his first, and maybe only, HR.1 point

His 300th HR was as a Tiger and hit off of Kansas City’s Bret Saberhagen on September 4, 1989. The Tigers traded Chris Hoiles and two players to be named later for him. Now that I think about it, “players to be named later” is a ridiculous phrase. Unless the player is not yet born, they probably have a name. That phrase should probably be changed.1 point

Norris has decent projections too among old friends out there. I suspect they may have a deal with one or two of those guys but are waiting on the roster spot from Mize/Skubal next week.1 point

I believe Petry, Maybin and Jones will be primarily doing the desk work for the pre and postgame shows. Monroe and Gibson will be doing the both work. I'd assume when Gibson is in, Monroe might be back on the desk for those games, or maybe off.1 point

You've seen Jaws, right? There's a seen where Chief Brody's son and his friends are on a little boat in the "Pond" and the shark is in the pond and there's a guy in a little rowboat and he says "Hey you guys, you guys okay over there?". That guy makes me think of Mark Fidrych every time1 point

Oh don't get me wrong, the Bears have needed a new stadium for a long time. I just hate that in places that have had a lot of memorable outdoor games in Chicago and Buffalo, that we'll never see that again once they go to domes. A dome in Chicago and Buffalo just doesn't seem right, doesn't feel like "football" but maybe I'm just being a "Get off my Lawn" guy right now.1 point

More reports coming out that Bojan is untouchable. This is either next level chess, or they haven't received the offers they wanted and now the organization is covering their tracks to make it look good. No other explanation makes sense. You don't keep a 34 year old who's having the best offensive season of his life but can't defend his way out of paper bag when you're in the Piston's situation...unless you can't get enough solid assets in return. Regardless, if true, then you've got to move Bey. You can't go into next season with the worst defensive wing rotation in the NBA and expect to "compete" for anything but a lotto spot. They're locked into the development of their Guards and Center, so the 3-4 is the only place they have to make a significant upgrade and that means making space for that upgrade while collecting assets. If you come back with the same team (+Cade and a rookie) expecting to compete through development alone you're going to be sorely disappointed.1 point

this is certainly what they hope. My only argument with Buddha is that as I see it they have to go out and beat the bushed to find those folks, and it's going to be a significant effort. My argument is with people who think they have a queue of people knocking down the door and they have just been snubbing them out 'arrogance' or some such. I think that is an unrealisitic take. The U has very little pride when it comes to taking money. 😂1 point

Definitely one of my top moments as a Tigers fan. Maybe because I was younger then, but this is even more memorable than the Ordonez homer for me.1 point

I think you might have a laugh. As some have suggested, it’s not like Avila failed on every single thing he ever did bar none. They made some pretty good picks—they just didn’t know how to develop them into winners using the old school ways, in a game that long ago moved on to the new school. I mentioned John Schreiber just the other day as an example of having a talent in the fold that they simply didn’t know what to do with, so they let him go for nothing. But now that a new system run by new bosses and people is in place, I think we need to give them at least two years to see the fruits start to sprout. It’s so interesting how people who agree that the coaching we had up and down the system, especially on the hitting side, was horrific, yet still blame the players for failing under it. I think that’s short-sighted. I would bet a lot of those guys are going to rebound and, to your point, we’ll see signings and draftings under the Avila regime pay off more than that regime could figure out how to elicit.1 point

The Tigers system is awful. Pretty much every system has depth that could break through if things break right and the Tigers are no different in that regard. As of now, the Tigers don't really have any top 50 or higher talent and so they will do poorly on any ranking. That will change a bit at the end of the year with the addition of the #3 draft pick, but still a long way to go. I think the international system's lack of success is mostly tied to the Illitch family, though. I don't think any organization invests less in player development for international prospects than the Tigers have done. Their facilities are a total joke and they don't even own them. I'm hoping Harris can get Illitch to change on that front. It is about 28% of the player pool and the Tigers have been playing with one arm behind their back for a long time. In terms of Avila, I had disliked him for a long time, but the day they chose Jobe over Mayer and Lawlar broke me. Jobe is a decent prospect too and could pan out, but it is still an indefensible pick. They didn't even save money on the pick as Jobe signed for almost full slot value and for more than Mayer and Lawlar signed for with their respective clubs. In happier news, at least Jack Morris doesn't get paid anymore to announce for the team.1 point

Lebron had 26/7/7 tonight. He averages 27/7/7 for his career but in 1408 games he has never had a 27/7/7 game.1 point

Yeah - I think too little, too late is pretty much Al's epitaph. I think directionally his ideas were right, he just never got far enough on enough of them.1 point

By the way, Andrea Riseborough's episode of Black Mirror had the darkest twist of all at the end. It was the episode set in Iceland (you know the one). To me, just about every episode of Black Mirror is better than most movies. There's been a couple of clunkers, but not many. I think one of the things that make it such a great show is they don't sell out for a happy ending. I think two or maybe 3 episodes had happy endings.1 point

I wish I could share with this forum the pure joy the Hausfrau had with the Comptroller General's responses to MTG's bizonkers questioning yesterday. She's up there talking nonsense and he's a pure technocrat who bleeds and lives by clean government. That was an immovable object being hit by an object directed by pure misinformation. You'll see the stories if you watch for them today about: Drag Queen story hour being misheard by him as Dry Clean CRT being taught at a school in Chicago which was given $5.1B for the purpose My wife works with the CG so she knows he actually had no idea what MTG was talking about and was up there to talk with professionals about professional matters. Cross-fit gym ownership does not prepare one for public policy.1 point

It costs a lot to get your franchise QB. When people know that's what you're doing, the price goes up very quickly. I don't think allowing the Jets to pass 2-4 QB-needy teams in the Raiders and Panthers, maybe the Falcons and Titans too, comes for a price less than a 2024 1st to start. For context, the Bears went from 20 to 11 (400-point jump) to get Fields and had to surrender a future 1st to do so (in addition to a 4th and 5th). 13 to 6 is more than that, a 450-point jump. If the Jets call with that offer you say, "we'll get back to you" and immediately have five people make five phone calls, bidding their offer against those four teams above, as well as the Commanders. If the Jets aren't willing to give a 1st, I would sooner take the Raiders 2nd round pick and drop a single spot, guaranteeing you don't miss your guy. If that's the only offer out there, you have to consider it, but seven spots is a lot. Even assuming Carter and Anderson are gone, you have to know you may miss out on instant difference makers like your pick of Gonzalez/Porter/Witherspoon, Bijan Robinson, Tyree Wilson, Myles Murphy, and even Peter Skoronski.1 point

I created an Alternative and Indie Country Music starter kit playlist on Spotify that I thought I'd share. Something to give friends, family, and those I interact with on the internet a good starting point for indie country and americana artists. What you won't find in this playlist are very many major record label artists, nor any modern bro or pop country crap. Little if any songs about tailgates, tan lines, and whatever crap they are signing about in modern "country" these days. What you will find is a collection of real country, americana, and folk music. You will find great song writing and incredible storytelling from true artists interested in making real music. Artists who aren't signed to major record labels, being told what to sing and write about. Enjoy as you wish. The embedded playlist below only displays 100 songs, but I have more than that in there if you click on it.1 point

The sad part for Mario is that I think he could have become a lot more loved in Det if he had gotten out from under working with Rod. The big knock on Mario was that he seemed like such a cold fish, but I have a feeling that was only because he was sitting next to a guy he didn't like or want to talk to about anything more than the game. On the few occasions when people had to fill in for an Allen absence, Mario was a much more personable guy. Blame that on Allen or blame it on Mario from not getting past himself to be better, but it was what it was. At some point Mario probably should have realized the Tigers weren't going to dump Allen and moved on for the sake of his own career.1 point
