  1. bert is often injured, often undisciplined, and isnt the key to them winning a playoff series. he's also about to get paid and is at the end of his prime. trade him now while he still has value.

  2. I think it’s more about the home run, which the hall helps. Hit it out or get struck out. Too much of that these days.

  4. We will see if it actually does prevent injuries. Just based on observation, it doesn't seem like anything they have done over the years to give a break to pitching staffs seems to have reduced injuries. I still think most of what ails the game today revolves around the obsession with home runs. Deaden the ball and I think a lot of problems would be fixed. They won't do that though because chicks dig the long ball $$$$.

  7. Yes, and all of that is 100% because of the ball.

  10. Yeah, the bolded part is super confusing. I don't know exactly what's going on there. I think part II is trying to set limits on the original team getting compensation. Part (ii)a certain seems like it's a limit: The original club has to have employed the person for two full season. And the later half of part (ii)b is a limit: There can be no break in employment between clubs. So a team can't say: "5 years ago this guy was our receivers coach for two year until he went to the other club as the OC and now a third club hired him as HC so we get compensation." But the first part of (ii)b is super confusing: The minority employee is not the Head Coach or Primary Football Executive of the employer-club and is hired into the same position with the new club. This big thing here is what does "same position" mean? I suspect that it's a reference Head Coach or Primary Football Executive. As in: "The guy can't be the team current HC or GM and needs to be hired by the next team to one of those same positions we just mentioned." This makes the most sense as everything else in both parts if very specifically talking about HC or GM. Additionally, there is no talk about what compensation a team would get for a lateral move of a coach/executive and I can't imagine they intend to give the same compensation for a lateral move like Duce as for a team hiring a minority HC or GM.

  11. https://theathletic.com/4191908/2023/02/13/mlb-extra-innings-position-player-rules/ 2019: 37 games went 13 innings or longer. 8 games went 15 innings or longer. 2022: 11 games went 13 innings or longer. None went 15 or longer. The chain reaction from those roster moves bleeds down the minor leagues. If you have to call up three pitchers to have a fresh staff the next day, then AAA gets depleted, AA, etc.... And you have pitchers whose arms you are trying to protect pitching in bad spots. I guess the overall point I'm trying to make is, if you are the fan that watches games and sees the extra inning runner, I can understand how you may not like it. Hell, I don't. If you are the type of fan who follows roster moves, nitty gritty, minor leagues, etc., it starts to make more sense.

  16. Unlike you Luddites, I like the new extra innings with the runner on second base. Adds a new strategic dynamic and does shorten games.

  17. I remember growing up when Columbine was like 9/11. A one-off tragedy that wouldn't happen again. Until it did at Virginia Tech. And then again at Sandy Hook. And then again at Parkland. And then again at Uvalde. And then again at Oxford. And then again at Michigan State. From my K12 experience to now, I've gone from a lockdown being just something that we do when a deer gets trapped in the courtyard (7th grade), to choosing a seating chart on the first day of class based on the likelihood of victimization if a gunman entered the room (present day in grad school). I simply can't imagine what it must be like for kids growing up in this twisted version of American education. Speaking of the 9/11 analogy, imagine if we expended the resources we did on 9/11 (which killed less than 3,000 people) on combatting firearms (which kill about 3,000 people every month). I'll just keep taking my shoes off at the airport though while children die for going to school.
