Before the draft, people were saying it would be a reach to pick Witherspoon at 6 and now we're praising Seattle for picking him at 5?4 points

It’s not a secret that Holmes and MCDC value personality and culture fit more than most other teams. A great interview with them can go farther than someone’s game tape and workout numbers. Naturally, they are going to have a widely different big board than other teams and even more varied from the mockers that completely discount it. Holmes said Jack Campbell was the highest player on their board at 18 and it wasn’t very close. Everyone loved his interview and attitude. This pick shouldn’t be a surprise. it’s exactly the player they wanted. Some can say it’s stupid to pick him at 18 when he could’ve been had later but I would counter it would be dumber to pass on the highest player on your board because of what someone else’s board may look like.3 points

With having 10 picks, I would like to see the Lions take a kicker like Moody late. A team that fancies itself a contender will need a reliable kicker.2 points

gibbs is not marshall faulk or deebo samuel or a work horse back. he's an extremely fast back who can catch. if you wanted marshall faulk, you should have drafted bijan robinson.2 points

I think a lot us around here have talked about how awesome it would be to have a Deebo Samuel. Well, that's what Gibbs is going to be for us. He's a Swiss Army Athlete. Teams better pay attention to him...........wait, they'd better pay attention to ASB too......... The Lions will have two offensive weapons that can be used a number of ways. Plus, this town is going to love Jack Campbell. He the middle linebacker we've been missing since Stephen Boyd Offensive Line -is one of the best Quarterback - Starter is very good and they are likely to upgrade the backup (Bridgwater or Wentz) Running Backs - a Deep and versatile group behind a great line, Wide Receivers - Good group, hurt by Jameson's stupidity, but they can still get quality in the draft in the 2nd, 3rd or even 5th round (or package picks to get one) and there are still a couple of vets to deepen the group. Remember, the passing game was working before Jameson last year. I am a big fan of Cedric Tillman Tight Ends - No stars here but they played a really key role after Hock was traded (post Hoc). I am pretty sure they'll take a TE somewhere, but honestly, they don't need to take one. Wright, Mitchell and Zylstra were fine Defensive Line - Could always use some improvement but it was getting better at the end of the season and they are getting Levi back. They did draft him in the 2nd round and thought highly of him. He wasn't 100% healthy in his rookie year. Maybe he's really good and we just haven't had a chance to see him. They get Charles Harris back. The Okwaras are both healthy right now. Secondary - a weak point last year, completely addressed by acquiring 3 really good free agents and will be getting Tracy Walker back. If this group stays healthy, they have rotational depth now too. And they can still add a decent CB in Round 2 Linebackers - This has been a weak point, but they do have okay players here. Anzalone was a much better player after Aubrey Pleasant was let go and the secondary started adhering to Glenn's scheme. Rodrigo was pretty good last year, but he has his weaknesses. James Houston is a QB missile specialist. They got Reeves-Maybin back (who I thought was pretty good in his last Lions season) and now they add Jack Campbell. He's a really good run-stopper and he can cover tight ends, one of our weaknesses. They have solid rotational depth at linebacker, which is not really a position that people think of as important, but Campbell's going to be really good. It's a long-winded point that the Lions didn't have a weak group coming into last night except for Linebackers and they improved that. Wide Receiver might be slightly lacking in depth right now, but they can improve that on Day 2 or Day 3. The Lions had a great Free Agent offseason and didn't need to fill major holes. The biggest objective in this draft was building depth. I think they did that with both picks last night and will continue the next two days. They simply didn't think the D-Line guys outside of Will Anderson were worth it at 6. Now, lets go get a QB with some experience so the team does not fall apart if Goff gets hurt. Gibbs is going to be exciting as hell next year and I don't care about RB short shelf life. This team is going for it NOW. Honestly, they are the #3 favorite to win the NFC behind Philly and San Francisco. Gibbs is the move when you want to win NOW.2 points

Don't the players have some agency in all of this? AJ isn't out there taking ABs....2 points

Holmes is determined to end the 2nd round curse. He drafted two second rounders on the first day, and now had three second rounders the next day. Surely one of five will be a success... right?... right?2 points

To add to Cardinal's post about value I got a kick out of Kiper giving the Falcons **** for drafting Bijan at 8 instead of in the 20s like where his "value" is. If you want to question the pick due other reasons that fine but this argument will never make sense to me. NFL teams don't get to pick and choose where they want to pick at and where they pick said players at. It's not like the Falcons can say "Hey Roger give us Bijan at pick 25", all they can do is pick the player highest on their board at the slot they have. Yes you could say you could trade back but A you need to find that team to trade with and B. there isn't a guarantee that guy will be there at that pick. Bottom line the draft is about getting the best players for your organization as possible, if you have to reach a little or get low "value" so be it, better that than missing out on the players you want.2 points

I wouldn’t have picked either player that early but I like Gibbs and pick 34 better than Bijan.2 points

I'm not gonna lie, I'm baffled by this draft and not just the Lions but in terms of the Lions picks, took two players at less than premium positions way before they were projected to go. Of course, there's a lot of variance in every teams' board especially in this draft where there are very few legit 1st round talents but my first reaction to both picks was "WTF?". I actually thought they would trade up for Gibbs late in the 1st and might take Campbell at 48 but 12 and 18 I did NOT expect. This seems very "smartest guy in the room" but we'll see, I'm just a fan so what do I know and Holmes has a good track record so we'll just trust in him. I'm not sure why they had to throw the 3rd in to the Arizona trade even with a 5th coming back. I thought 6 for 12+34 alone was fair but, again, what do I know, I'm just a fan. I do like that they have three 2nds so I assume we'll see some trench heavy picks tomorrow but it's Holmes so who knows. Also, Swift has to get traded now I'd think. They didn't draft Gibbs at 12 to redshirt him. This is Montgomery and Gibbs backfield now. Also, passing on Carter and allowing the Eagles (a team they're chasing) to get him could be a fatal mistake. Then they get Nolan Smith, Eagles just killing it.2 points

Now we know why they picked up that extra 2nd rounder. As @Jason_R said earlier, they want to control the 2nd round. They are just doing it from the middle of the first.2 points

“Why didn’t you call 9-1-1?” “Why didn’t you report it?” “Why didn’t you scream?” Those questions …. I hope that somewhere during that civil trial the statistics of what percentage of women who are sexually assaulted report it is presented. Everyone handles it differently, because…… well, … because. Some fight. Some don’t. Some can’t. Some won’t. Some relive it every day. Some tuck it away and deny it to themselves. Sometimes it takes another very mundane thing happening to have it come roaring back. Sometimes you heal. Sometimes, you’re destroyed.2 points

I think there's still a few solid DBs left before you hit another drop off so I think it would be wise for Brad to snag one of them with this next pick and not risk waiting or else you may end up with one that is a tier or 2 lower.1 point

That's not "uh oh" at all, Best was a great player the rare times when he was healthy and already had injury red flags coming into the draft that I believe Gibbs doesn't have. I'm not championing the pick (I've made my negative opinion on these picks known) but if Gibbs is a Best level player, that's a good thing.1 point

Is Kreidler really that good of a prospect? They've got a bunch of lower level prospects with more upside - Jung, Graham, Santanta, Pacheco, etc.1 point

This. I'm pretty sure that they will take a defensive back today. Maybe even two. Based on what they've said I don't think this was the case, but if your overly simplistic Madden ratings look like this: RB: 99 / 96 / 74 / 72 / 70 ... CB: 98 / 97 / 95 / 90 / 88 / 85 / 85 / 85 / 82 ... And you have the choice between the 96 RB or the 97 CB, it probably makes more sense to take the only remaining really good RB, because you can certainly get an 80-something corner later on.1 point

The Eagles are in a better position to take the risk on Carter. They don't have many holes and can afford to have a bust. The Lions are on the cusp and really need players who they can't miss on.1 point

Holmes said something about feeling like there were 5 true difference makers in this draft and he felt Gibbs was one of them. So my theory is that he had Anderson, Witherspoon, Bijan and Gibbs as 4 of them.(dont know the 5th perhaps it may have even been one of the qbs) So when the Seahawks took Witherspoon leaving the 2 rbs left as the difference makers he decided to take a chance and trade back figuring 1 of them would be there which of course he was.1 point

I really don't think Gibbs is a RB anyways. He's more of an athlete if that makes sense. It looks like he'll be doing some WR and catching plays on the ends as well.1 point

This isnt a very good draft...when the talent is thin and there isn't a lot of difference between mid 1st and 2nd rd talents, you're going to see a lot of perceived reaches1 point

I think the "value" argument has a couple meanings that are worth fleshing out. 1. There is the "don't pick X at #12 because he might have been there at #18. I don't find this particularly useful. Everyone's board is different for one, but also if he's your top player, don't risk it. I think risking it is more often trying to be the smartest person in the room than simply taking the best player available on your board. If the mainstream pundits had a 3rd round grade on a prospect and you take him at #12, that's one thing. But I don't think taking X at #12 when he maybe would be there at your next pick is bad in this situation. 2. The "positional value" argument of not taking certain positions high I think this has some amount of merit, but that it goes beyond just "don't take a RB or TE or off-ball LB in the 1st round" and is overused. Mazi Smith and Calijah Kancey are two guys who came off the board yesterday at non-"luxury" positions who are likely not every-down players. I think when you are a rebuilding team, taking a player at a more luxurious position does not really help you rebuild. But, I also think that teams whose 22 starters are all top-ten at their position are those that are Super Bowl contenders. At some point, you need to have great players fill those roles too. 3. The quality of player X at position A vs. the quality of players Y and Z at position A that almost certainly be there at #34 and beyond. This is what I really think of when I think of value. If I pass on corner A at #12, what kind of corners am I looking at in the 2nd round, and what is the drop-off between A and X, Y, and/or Z? It's also where I think the value argument doesn't work to take away from Gibbs and Campbell, at least based on their evaluations. I think the drop off between Gibbs and Charbonnet is so significant as to not even make it worth taking the latter, and that they see the drop off between Campbell and the other LBs as just as much. I also think this argument is why I would have been opposed to taking Gonzalez at #12 (or Witherspoon at #6 if he had been there). I don't think the drop off between Witherspoon and Quan Martin, or Gonzalez and Porter or Branch is that significant. In overly simplistic Madden terms, I would rather take a 96 RB in the 1st and an 88 CB in the 2nd than take a 96 CB in the 1st and only have RBs in the 70s available in the 2nd, with that 88 CB available, and have to now pass on addressing the RB position, or reach for a lesser player.1 point

This also signals to me they are committed to Goff. Goff is at his best when he has a good run game to fall back on and can play action pass off of. Now you add someone like Gibbs as a safety valve and this offense is being built around Goff.1 point

For YEARS I've heard people bitch about the Lions not having a LB that can run sideline to sideline, keep up with TEs up the middle or be able to help stuff the run. Now when they get a guy that projects to do that suddenly it isn't important and outdated.1 point

Just cannot do it and expect to win. Like, you can point the finger at AJ or Chasen Shreve all you want, but a better offense scores more than seven runs tonight.1 point

Depends on how their board looked. They very well may get Gonzalez at 12 and pick up a little extra capital. If they would've taken him at 6 to begin with people probably wouldn't have questioned it since many had him as the CB1.1 point
