The day we stop discussing Candelario is the day I will declare the rebuild to be over...when your team is winning, the small issues no longer matter5 points

he can ask all he wants but i doubt they get that much for a rental third baseman who has is having half a good season.4 points

Man, we are spending a lot of time discussing the trade value/signability of someone not on the 2023 Tigers.3 points

I think that is the opposite of what he would have done. I think Avila was pretty consistent in his goal of acquiring and retaining young players. He just wasn't particularly good at it and he was bad at other things such as free agent signings.2 points

2020 - Candelario led the Tigers in WAR 2021 - Candelario led the Tigers in WAR 2023 first half - Candelario has more WAR than any other Tiger. You know, I don't really care that much about Candelario, but I have a difficult time understanding why the majority of posters here seem to be trying to convince the minority that there is no possible reason why the Candelario would have been any use to the Tigers at all this year.2 points

He told a fan to get off him yesterday. I don't see how scolding fans can ever turn out well for a beat writer.2 points

The thing about this is that it is very very difficult to believe the Republicans would manufacture a scandal. Would be very unprecedented.2 points

Agree on 3-4 years: bad investment. But a 1-year...? Forget incremental offense... Would anyone want to have Candy on the roster right now... as a trade deadline candidate? Asking for a friend...2 points

Speaking of Smyly I see that after all these years he is still pitching solidly for the Cubs, currently sporting a 108 ERA+. Id have to imagine he's got to be one of the handful or so best draft picks of ours in the last 25 years.1 point

from being the "second coming of kevin durant" to a two way player in less than 3 years. congrats to emoni and his dad!1 point

They did, but because of his status as a non-tender candidate, they had to make a decision before the free agent market ever got off the ground. And they made it.... Who knows, maybe they actually did try to obtain other candidates during free agency and it didn't pan out. We don't really know that. Obviously Harris and/or Hinch will take flak for that, that goes with the territory. But one of my points, that I've been making for months now, is that I'm not going to take the position that it was fine to do what they did and then, retroactively, update it after they weren't able to backfill in the best possible way or when Candelario ended up having a better than expected year. That's called intellectual inconsistency. And with Candy being a free agent at the end of this year, it's just not the end of the world.... it feels like Paredes was a far worse outcome for this franchise and yet that topic has even received less time than flogging this horse has taken lol At the end of the day as well, I said this at some point recently, a lot of this comes down to the tendency of this current regime to tightly control information. They probably have more legit reasons for doing what they did here, whether one agrees with them or not, but that's also not publicly available information.... I'm sure in terms of the trade, there are benefits from that, but in terms of media and PR, it leaves a vacuum to be filled that the Tigers beat writers and fanbase are more than willing to fill. Often rooted in speculation rather than anything concrete.1 point

That was his best year though. Candelario did that in his worst year. I agree none of this stuff really matters, but this whole discussion started when people were defending Harris/Hinch for not having a decent 3B because there was nobody available. The fact is they already had one which is the main point I've been making on this topic the last couple of days.1 point

The what if game is silly. You can spin it anyway you want to. What if he stayed in Detroit and continued to suck? It doesn't matter. It's in the past. Decisions were made. The end. When he gets traded for three 18 year olds, do we have to hear about them for the next twenty years? One is in Korea, one blew out his knee and one runs a car dealership in D.C.1 point

if the Nats trade him to the Dodgers for Trayce Thompson, I'm going to be super pissed1 point

I'm looking forward to the posts keeping track of the bag of balls Candelario is traded for. The Tigers could have had that bag of balls....1 point

Baseball needs to allow picks to be traded. Would just make everything more interesting.1 point

Barring a promotion to Detroit, Meadows is in a good position to finish with a 20/20 season. Really encouraged by Luke Gold--after a rough start to the season, he has been raking and is putting up very respectable numbers. I can see him moving up to West Michigan at some point this season, which probably should be expected for a college player.1 point

I wonder if switch hitting will be less of a thing in the future. Back in the day when low 90's FB's were considered "heat" it was probably easier to get around on pitches from your "off" side. With so many 95+ FB out there (and fresher pitchers with the increase in BP use) will it become a lost art?1 point

Jim Price really slowing down. Dan’s been feeding him setups all game, Jimmy responds to about a third. It was a good run, but if he had hung ‘‘em up at the end of last season it would have been fine.1 point

Back to the Candelario discussion lol.... Food for thought: if they resign Candelario, is Zach McKinstry a Tiger today? Do they actually make the Phillies trade which, as bad as Nick Maton was, also did bring back Matt Vierling? Maybe that's a fine outcome, even preferable, YMMV... but they had a small window to make a decision after the 2022 season ended, before any free agency happened, and they made it. And we have to acknowledge that, because of butterfly effect, it could have had impacts on acquisitions that would have happened afterward and that might have not been entirely great either. I'm happy for Candy, but idk, I don't think it's a huge loss....1 point

If the Central Division remains week, it doesn't have take three or more years. If (and I know it's a big if) the Tigers get their pitching healthy, they can contend sooner than that.1 point

we picked 9th this year. predicting were going to pick 10th to 14th is not saying were going to be good. i actually think they'll be ok next year with predictable growth from the young players and the depth they've bought this summer. if they get a debrincat they might actually finish 6th in the division next season... it's two years from now, when seider and raymond should just be entering the beginning of their primes, that they should be competing for a playoff spot. then the question will be how we get rid of chairot and holl's contracts...1 point

Thanks. Not really much of a loss as it turned out. Holton replaced him for the league minimum and is cheap and controllable for a few more years, assuming he keeps his production up.1 point

If he is pitching well at the deadline you just have to trade him, otherwise he certainly walks for nothing. Tigs just can't tolerate giving away more recovable roster value. The only way you don't trade him is he signs a new deal before the deadline.1 point
