I do feel bad for someone when it looks like they are finished doing what they have done their whole life. I don’t hate players who’s only fault is not being good anymore. They aren’t doing anything wrong. Sometimes the vitriol I see bothers me. These are humans doing their best.

The worst part is that they made Schoop hit him grounders.

That was the best part of the broadcast. I don't know, but I suspect there is a bit of self guilt inside of him that he gets the flowers of the hall of fame nod et al while Whitaker is held to second fiddle status. They were both very good players on their own, but the sum of the parts and the rarity of its duration is what makes it special. The hall really botched it by not inducting both together.

To me "positional versatility" means Willi and Harold giving you bad D at six different positions.

It was nice to hear him say that the 1987 1-0 late season victory was the highlight of his storied career.

The combined no hitter was cool, but the best thing is that their two arguably most important future pieces came through nicely after recent injuries.

The first combined no hitter was in 1917 and the second came in 1967. 12 have come in the last 20 years. The first one is hilarious. Babe Ruth walked the first batter, got into an argument with the ump, punched him in the mouth and got ejected and then Ernie Shore came in and retired 26 in a row after the guy that walked was thrown out trying to steal second.

I think the majority of folks here were in favor. I know no one predicted the results for both sides of the deal.

The story of he and Willie Horton exchanging pleasantries after an inside pitch was pretty amusing. The photograph that they showed of the kumbaya was good. So for those that missed, Tanana (rookie season) pitched one to Horton a bit too inside to Horton's liking. Horton noted his suggestion from a shorter distance, teammates joined on field to listen to the critique. I don't think any punches were thrown. But then there was a reskirmish after Horton thought he heard some more chirping. Well, the Angels had a 3Bdude that looked like Tanana, and Horton started to wander over in his direction to reestablish his side of the story. The 3Bdude, probably fearing for his life, had to remind Horton that he was merely a doppleganger to the events, the pitcher was over that way. Tanana made mention that Mickey Stanley may have saved his life here/

Where we work out is a community center. During the election her people were having some kind of rally or something in either the theater or a meeting room. This collection of people I came across in the parking lot was straight out of a meme. Old ladies with funny hats and buttons. Lots of religious and anti abortion bumper stickers. Lots of them. Bible verses painted on the cars. I was going to ask them if JFK Jr was speaking but my wife wouldn’t let me.

Englert, 23, has a potential future with the Tigers, even if he isn't pitching all that great. Shreve, at 32, can be replaced. Once a lefty replacement is found for him... that is.

I took a tour of Fenway this week. The history and nostalgia and all of that is fun. The angle of the wall around the Pesky Pole in RF is much more impressive in front of you than on TV and sitting atop the Green Monster and all of that. I know a lot of stadiums way back when we’re susceptible to fires, and Fenway was a partial victim, but I learned a tornado also ripped down part of the CF stands. Anyway, walking around and hearing the stories and all of that, and I’m looking at the hundred year old seats and aisles wide enough for two people if they maneuver past each other sideways,…. That’s got to be an absolutely miserable place to watch a ballgame. And no trough urinals? I’m sorry, but a place that old needs to have trough urinals.

Can't wait to debate this next year if Schoop goes on a tear that we should have kept him.

That just happens to be Extension season. My hunch is that is when the front offices have a bit of downtime and can hammer those deals out with the offseason over and draft prep not yet heated up. They also have a better idea of their budget and their CBT number at that point. The Tigers would be wise to work out a deal with Keith (or Greene). Because the CBT is based on AAV, these types of deals are smart for teams whose payroll will be increasing in future years because you can take a bit of AAV in your CBT number now against later. I bet it is moot for the Tigers going forward, but that is a factor for some teams, especially some teams who may be up against it now and can't really justify pushing that AAV up now. I suspect this is a big reason why the Tigers had to go year-to-year with Castellanos and JD Martinez back in the day instead of trying to lock them up.

Incidentally, I believe the bolded could be a reason they didn't bring Candy back..... Harris/Hinch value versatility, and Candelario isn't versatile. Maybe despite whatever bounce back upside he may have had, they didn't see him as part of the long term picture and moved on.... which is fine.

I am impressed that you know how all that stuff works and I am sure there are lots of stuff teams do that I don't think about. However, there is a large variation among teams in budgets and how they approach contracts. Teams with larger budgets still have to be careful, but they have a lot more freedom. The Yankees and Dodgers are going to worry less about adding a 7 million salary than the Rays and Athletics. Last year, the Rangers went nuts signing everybody. A couple of years ago, it was the Padres. I am not suggesting the Tigers do something similar, but making the point that teams operately differently.

I understand that, but when the Tigers lose a player that I like (and I am not really talking about Candelario because he's not very important) I am not going to be happy even if it's the "right" financial move. For example, if Greene becomes a star and they trade him in a few years for less than he's worth because they don't feel they can afford his contract, I am not going to rationalize it by saying they made a smart business move. I am just going to be disappointed that they lost him.
