  1. Maybe playing third every day was a distraction. Anyway, Nick Maton is a better hitter than he's shown this year. I really believe that. I think he fell into a hole and started thinking too much. Not saying he's an All Star, but he's not a .160 hitter either. I think the manager was foolish to keep putting him in the 5 spot, I think it just made everything worse. Maybe the Tony Packo diet let him take a breather. It doesn't matter if someone bats left or right if they don't hit at all. Putting at 7 or 8 in the lineup could help too. Don't give up on him. I think he's at least a decent utility guy.

  3. Who is the backup 1Bdude when Torkleson is at DH? Or do they roll with two 2Bdudes and they rotate as middle 2Bdude and foul line 2Bdude? Maybe they start standing next two each other and one of them rolls over to 1B while the pitcher goes in motion, almost like a man in motion in football? Talk about chess level chess. Come on AJ, we knew you read the forums. Let’s see it! And stop staring at me when I’m at the yard.

  5. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/munsoth01.shtml That's Thurman Munson. All star in 7 of 10 full time seasons behind the plate. He averaged .292/.346/.410, good for a 116 OPS+ and 5.2 WAR over his tragically short life. Add on a ROY season and MVP season. The HOF committee never inducted him through 15 ballots. He never had double digit percentages with the exception of 15.5% on his first ballot. People use Don Mattingly as the exception to the New York bias, but I think Munson is the better example. The HOF museum is a fantastic place to visit. HOF enshrinement is an absolute head scratcher sometimes. If/when Buster Posey is inducted into the hall, baseball historians and media darlings absolutely need to bring up cases for Munson & Freehan.

  8. We know Hamm is under slot. I'd bet the others are as well. As a said, get your under slot guys signed first so you know how much you have to work with, and in case everybody is hit by a bus so you aren't over 105%.

  10. Yawn. My dad and I are tied with 0. What’s more, my son (which I do not have any offspring of the male variety) is also tied with us at 0. Three generations tied with the same number of home runs. Go ahead, top that.

  12. So I wonder what he saw from his angle. I bet he thought Torkelson had it as his initial movement was to field the ball which put him in a reasonably good throwing position to deliver the ball home. For all of his fielding question marks, Torkleson has shown a pretty strong and accurate arm. So, we benefit from multiple TV angles, but I wonder if Pollock’s angle (and possibly the base coach) reads significantly different than what we saw.

  18. Something happened the first week of June. He hasn't been the same since. His walk rate more than doubled. It wouldn't surprise me if he's hurt and doesn't want to say anything because he finally got the closer role. He's been their worst pitcher since that second appearance in Chicago on June 4.

  19. If I were the Tigers I try to get Lange throwing a 4 seamer against the curve instead of the sinker as he can't control the run on the sinker and you don't want to throw the chase pitch (the curve) in the zone. He needs to have a pitch he can throw for a strike when a hitter is taking.

  20. Crew chief review. Not sure how appropriate it is for an ump to put hiss thumb on the scale at that point in a game.

  21. Sure, I think it was interesting and glad you posted it. I, and I think others, was simply giving reasons why it should be discounted a bit as probably not as positive as it would seem at first glance. I don’t want to discourage anyone from finding and posting tidbits like that though.

  23. Holy Toledo, what a play at the plate. Too bad it’s gonna be overturned. Dan says he thinks Julio might have hurt himself at third, but I think he hurt himself as the batter-runner crossing first. He was running funny after crossing it.

  26. Also gone. Fact is, Maton is practically the best choice for his slot on the roster at this point in time. We have nothing better than he, and there’s nothing better that’s available to pluck off the free agent tree, or else Harris would be bringing them in.

  36. I think he was blackballed because he was critical of the Tigers organization. On another note...On two occasions, Fenech took my blog post and used it as his entire Free Press article. He gave me full credit, so I loved it but it was strange that he did that.

  38. Lou and Tram shoulda gone in together. Longest DP combo in MLB history and that record prolly won't ever be broken. And Lou's numbers are as good as, or better, than many other 2nd basemen. IMO, which doesn't count, he should have already been in.

  40. You can't just throw out stats. Stats are not a reward for good morals and ethics, They are a record of the game's history. Hundreds of hitters and pitchers used PEDs. It's not even practical to try to re-adjust all the stats to penalize the hundreds of hitters and pitchers who used steroids, amphetamines, etc. You can say that you think Aaron was a better home run hitter, but Bonds is the all-time home run leader. If I was going to select the best home run hitter, it wouldn't be either of them. I still think that's Ruth.
