  1. sure with Mize it's a small gap but add up those small gaps among several players and you have a big gap. I'm very pro player on these kinds of things. In this case I'm just pushing back on narratives that to me are unfounded. By assuming the org should always bend to the player automatically gives the player the upper hand and puts them in a position to ask for more. If an org says X, then the player can say "Well, let's make it X plus Y" and the org should bend just to be nice? Casey Mize busted his ass and did everything the Tigers asked because they are paying his salary and he wants to recover and get a large deal down the line. Le'ts not pretend he's doing them favors by doing that. He's doing his job and got paid to do it.

  2. just to play devil's advocate..... why is it always incumbent on the org to show loyalty to the player by giving in? He didn't play for almost 2 years. He got paid to rehab. Yes, it's contractual that he gets paid but these proposals are very close so I don't see the logic in blaming one side for not caving. It's business. It'll be forogtten in 6 months.

  4. Tigers will probably spend about $25K preparing their case that Mize sucks. Pissing away 3.5M on Kelly, but trying to strong arm Mize over pocket change? Another unforced error by Harris. "So dumb" is so apt.

  5. Cooper out there kissing up to 5-0. I hope his game on Sunday is a dead as his street cred.

  6. From 2012: https://www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article/17566/overthinking-it-does-arbitration-drive-players-away/ McCosky yesterday mentioned this has gotten a lot less contentious over the years, but consider the source. A lot of consternation in here over something that will likely be forgotten by late March.

  7. A lot of hyperbole in here this morning... It does strike me as penny wise, pound foolish though, but there's no tangible evidence out there that going to arbitration has any effect on performance or relations with a player going forward. I just wonder if preparing for and attending the hearing comes close to exceeding the salary gap. It's also possible Mize's camp was pushing for a higher number during negotiations, or the negotiated contract was a deal with some kind of incentive structure, and then filed with a much lower number than he was asking for originally.

  8. At least we now have a better idea of who the five starters will be at the beginning of the season.

  10. To be fair, it's going to be dangerously cold in Kansas City. I wouldn't pay money to get frostbite and watch the game.

  11. Laporta running the same drills as the other TEs. Mitchell is absent so we really need Laporta back.

  12. "That's good, that's three, right? I think you said you [were going to do three] ..." Side whisper to producer: [Emmeffer], if you book this [c-word] on this show again, you're getting fired with extreme prejudice, you clear?"

  13. Just boarded my flight out of grand forks. Will be landing in Detroit this evening, barring any weather interruptions. My brother lives in Ann Arbor, looks like there is a parade tomorrow too! Lets ****ing go.

  14. I get it. What's Mize done for us besides cash an $8 million draft bonus check and pitch one year of average-ish ball? If he performs this year to even 85% of his draft day expectations, he'll get plenty good and paid in 2025.

  15. I think they did got all out for one more score but got stopped on 4th down and then subsequently gave up a TD right before the half. Their first 2 TD’s were 40+ yard runs. So going for it on 4th there was the equivalent of going all out for this team.

  17. You have a great taste in music and I always enjoy myself being exposed to new, quality music that is outside the mainstream. Another artist you should check out is Amanda Fields and her 2023 album What, When, and Without. Her new single Dying Leaves is also really good stuff.

  18. Most of the cases this year are hundreds of thousands apart. Webb and the Orioles are 75k apart. Bickford and the Mets are 85k apart. The 25k difference is the really silly part of this and seems like a waste of time.

  19. I think you can be pro-player while still recognizing that this is a business and these negotiations have two parties who are going to negotiate their side to the best of their abilities. Fans hate it, understandably, because it isn't their money, but the fact that fans hate it doesn't make it not a reality. We've had this discussion in other contexts as well (ie. non-tenders during the last offseason, not gonna say the name because that horse has been flogged to death about 19 times). That said, even if the gap between the two sides is larger than published, the outcry isn't very surprising given how it looks.

  24. Wait, they gave Jokic #15 to erase Anthony's accomplishments? What exactly were his accomplishments? Making it out of the 1st round once? Demanding to be traded?

  25. Cause I feel the Lions are the better team, probably be 55/45 on a neutral field but get the 5 point bump for home field advantage. Yes the Rams are playing better now but you can't just throw out the rest of the season like it didn't happen and if you look at virtually every metric the Lions have been the superior team.

  33. Besides Jason's album Weathervanes, Gabe Lee had my favorite album of 2023 with Drink the River. Superior songwriting from Gabe Lee compared to almost anything out there in music in general, but certainly compared to the booty-pop and bro-country that's out there in mainstream country. My favorite songs from Gabe Lee's Drink the River album are the title track Drink the River, Lidocaine, Even Jesus Got the Blues, and my personal favorite, The Wild.
