One big difference is the run differential. Last year after 40 they had a significant negative RD. This year they are +33 points

Being a baptist kid in the Detroit suburbs was weird. I always felt like I was at a disadvantage talking to all the kids who had "communions" and "cattykism" and all the kids at my church were from down south. Even so, being a northern Baptist was suspect to those folks when i went and visited my in-laws in North Carolina. I made my dog tags in the military say "Protestant No Pref" just so I could maintain my distance with all the in-crowd catholics of my youth and those doctrinaire weirdo snake handlers and megachurchers in the protestant churches i'd encountered. The single best sermon of my life was the Black chaplain whose service i attended in basic training who friggin knocked it out of the park because he spoke to what to me at the time felt like being "oppressed" as a kid in that basic training life cauldron and gave great inspiration when I was ready to have that. I don't think I've ever listened to a sermon since that had that effect on me. So, yeah, white evangelical culture: not a fan. Black evangelical culture: I get why it has great value.2 points

Holy crap... SA came back and won it! A 10+ minute drive in the 4th qtr for a TD, then a 3-pt conversion. On the kickoff Houston fumbled, SA takes over and drives down for a Ryan Santoso FG to win it and put the Panthers into the playoffs. Yes, that Ryan Santoso...1 point

Tork hitting a home run there was like Roy Williams celebrating getting a 1st down when the Lions are down 37-3 with 41 seconds left in the game.1 point

been a depressing week for this team. Today I can take. It's one thing to get stoned by Verlander when he has it all working, or even losing ugly and knowing there is stuff you can fix, but continuing to fall just short of the mark in close games and have no answer is more the downer.1 point

He’s had a pretty good week. Hopefully he’s figured something out and we’re seeing this going forward. They need to lengthen the lineup out as much as possible. A rejuvenated Torkelson and a maturing Keith would really help out.1 point

That's my biggest issue with the drop. I didn't think they were trading it anyway but this makes a trade far more unlikely. I hope they take more of a high floor prospect than can contribute sooner, like a choose your white shooter guy Sheppard or Knecht I guess.1 point

So, ok, here’s the rainbow around this pile of lottery crap. The Pistons won’t improve enough to stay out of the lottery next year, and welcome to Detroit Cooper Flagg.1 point

the real interesting news is that the pistons have already been awarded the 5th pick in the 2025 nba draft.1 point

That also takes a little of the shine off the pick if they plan to trade it.1 point

Interesting contrast - Verlander did give in to Torkelson with the middle-middle FB but Took couldn't get on top of it. EDIT: could get high enough on the line drive either......1 point

Hold on, Verlander has top seniority among active MLB players? I hadn’t thought of that, but I guess it makes sense. Damn I’m old.1 point

Remember when they started sporting pink in ballgames on Mother’s Day? That was probably about, what, 2010 or so? Back then there was still enough of—to use a way of speaking contemporaneous to the times—the stink of gay around the color to suppress adoption of use, and I would say roughly two-thirds of players did not participate, and of those who did swing a pink bat their first time up, at least a third of them went back to their regular non-pink bats for subsequent trips to the plate. We do have a completely different generation of players in the game now, though, and a lot of them were familiar with female authority figures in the sports they grew up playing, like women coaches, umpires, girl players, and the like. There’s a lot that’s good about that in general, and one of them is the softening up toward use of the color pink as not being a commentary on your manliness.1 point

I can’t see that their underwear is showing through so I’m assuming they’re going commando.1 point

Alex Lyon got cut on his hand yesterday at Worlds and is out of the tournament. Trey Augustine came in and played well and looks to be the starter the rest of the way. This is very, very rare for U20 college goalie to get this kind of experience against pros at Worlds.1 point

Not uncommon in baseball. Despite the myth among some fans that players start slacking off or malingering once they start making any money, almost all players are hardwired to be warrior competitors who are driven to excel on nothing more than its own terms. That competitiveness and drive were how players were able to rise through the ranks to the majors over lesser players in the first place. So playing through injury with an eye toward prevailing over adversity is a pretty common thing in the game, particularly among players who are one bad streak from seeing their careers end, which, if you think about it, is most players at any given moment. It may be worth noting that Foley was an undrafted free agent who bloomed after college, so I hypothesize he might be more susceptible to simply losing it than those who had elite skills since childhood. Remember, too, that he is already 28 years old and that’s about when baseball aging starts calling for many.1 point

I am once again reminded of one of my pet peeves, while trying to plan a vacation. I asked people to let me know 1, what kind of lodging they want, and 2, how much they want to spend. The answer ranged from nothing at all, to "whatever you decide is okay with me." I'm guessing you can guess what comes next-I choose something, and all of a sudden everyone has an opinion (generally that everything about my choice is wrong). Now the prices have gone up, and it looks like it's too much now. I should know by now to plan my own vacation, and then whoever wants to come can join me.0 points
