it's been a few days and I've avoided all things about the election as best I could. I would scan this thread but am not invested in it anymore. I just don't care. I had my most productive day at work on Wednesday. I wasn't checking twitter or here to see the latest and greatest. I feel better about this that it was a blowout rather than a squeaker. I'm not saying I'm happy about it but it helps me accept it. I share both opinions I read about from Lee and MTU. He never should have been nominated again. That's on the voters. He never should have been elected again. That's on the voters. Our voters run the country. This is the country we have. He'll win the popular vote, I assume, I haven't been looking. So...... this is who our fellow citizens wanted based on these two choices. My hope now is that all the scary talk is just bluster and hyperbole and the political forces of our legislature will do it's work and big business will pull their strings beacuse they need employees and customers. The House has to get elected again in 2 years. I'm not going to listen to his stuff every day and worry about what he says or does. I am going to be one of those people who has no idea what's going on anymore and every election I'm voting for the democrat,. The whole Trump show is a TV show. This is the revival. The revival is never as good or interesting as the original. People may have voted for him but they won't be watching or whatever.... and that will bother him. It will be boring. The one thing that really bothers me though are the judges and the SC. Alito and Thomas can now retire in the next 2 years and we'll get their replacements for a lifetime. It's probably too much to ask for someone to pull a Ginsberg... is that too harsh? No.4 points

It was also a lot more practical to "legally" immigrate here 25 years ago. The system needs reformed so people can do so and the people abusing the asylum system can be swiftly dealt with.3 points

My stepmother legally immigrated from Columbia 25 years ago. My Brother just married a Latino school teacher from Mexico, she is the best thing that ever happened to my brother and our family adores her. She could not come to the U.S. until last June because even though they were married for a year, they followed the rules until she could legally locate here. My daughter will graduate from college next year as the first member of my family with a bachelor's degree with an early education/ special needs major. I served two combat tours so I know what democracy costs. I am sure none of this passes your purity contest tho.3 points

Amazing how every subsequent candidate that the Democratic Party has run throughout my life has been "the worst candidate I've ever seen"... I've been around 36 years (literally today), and have can remember every election since 2000... I've been hearing the same types of people saying this **** every four years since. No real thought behind it, no nuance, just the same buzzwords over and over. Just not worth engaging, guys.3 points

15 years ago, Vancouver’s CFL team needed a temporary place to play for 2 seasons while the roof of our domed stadium was being improved and the stadium renovated. Used a recreational football field in the east end of the city that had a seating capacity of 0. Parents would just stand along fences or the sidelines watching their youth play. So 27,000 seats of bleachers (some chairs, some long flat benches) were erected in 3 months for only $15mm. Then removed a couple of years later. Below is what the site looked before and after (upper pic) and during (lower pic).2 points

I've been spending the past couple days catering to my spouse who had a bionic knee put in Wednesday. The Sun came up both days. I still have concerns about the future of health care under the new regime as well as inflation if DJT gets his way with tariffs. At least the neighbor Trumpers have taken down their HOA forbidden flag (again) and if I'm out walking the dog ( or run into them at the dog park) I'll still refuse to engage for a while. They seem nice, but the grudge lingers. Meanwhile looking forward to statewide elections next year and the election of future Governor Spanberger.2 points

I appreciate your opimism, but Trump attempted a coup against the United States of America and the majority of the country is fine with that. It's not going to be easy to get back to any kind of normalcy and I don't think the country cares.2 points

Grant suspending the prisoner exchanges was a big hit for the south. Outmanned as the south was to begin with, this was a big blow.1 point

IDK, but at a minimum the CSA army wasn't defending their home turf at Gettysburg.1 point

It wasn't per se. I think Oblong AND CMRIVdogs will have a better feel on this but the big mistake the Confederacy which cost them the war made was when they were trying to push into Maryland and Pennsylvania that they issued orders to seize freedmen as war booty and they were trying to knock out the North by taking Washington. This led to the Gettysburg campaign which stopped Lee cold.1 point

I guess we are at the "just asking questions" phase of backing up allegations with evidence. BORING1 point

I look forward to the day when performative whining, crying and grievances aren't a main feature of American political discourse. Who am I kidding, an asteroid will probably get us before that happens... lol1 point

Pretty vividly remember both of Trump's assassination attempts being treated like very big deals. Not sure what the argument is here. Did the American public just not act viscerally enough to them or something?1 point

Not if filibuster rules get changed, which I now give a better than 50-50 chance of happening after January.1 point

He had black masked goons thump BLM protesters on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Lincoln would have spun in his grave.1 point

A couple of things: Latino voters aren't a monolith - not only do they come from different places, but at this point in time in the Latino experience, many of them are pretty far separated from the immigrant experience. We have more second and third generation Latinos, and the things that appeal to recent migrants =/= to those who have assimilated into the American experience. Latino voters are more acutely impacted by economics than just about every demographic group I do think the Democrats have an opportunity to win some of this support back; Trump benefitted from the overall environment and his standing as a successful businessman, and I question whether this was about an affinity for the GOP itself. But the work needs to happen immediately, and it starts by not taking these groups for granted and not falling into the same old traps of punching down at those who may have switched their vote in this election (I trust the actual party to do this, fwiw, but the supporter base needs to wake up here)1 point

If it got to the point where the majority of Latinos supported the Republicans, there would be no more talk of deportation.1 point

This is also probably why most automated phone systems always say "listen carefully, because some options have changed."1 point

I've seen many different theories about why this election went the way that it did, but I do think governance in blue states is a huge huge factor. Especially at the mayoral level in various cities. States like NY, NJ, IL saw pretty significant turnout drops. Cannot help but think that Brandon Johnson being way out of his depth is a big reason why IL swung even further to the right than the country as a whole did this time around, for instance...1 point

On a side note, Daniel Lurie has defeated London Breed in the race for SF Mayor. Lurie is heir to the Levi Strauss family. Breed has conceded the race. He’s a native of the city and promises to bring it back to its more appealing past. I wish him well and hope he succeeds.1 point

Petry is just sad to watch. He knows what to do but just fails. He sets up on a guy, the guy goes right past him, he goes into the corner, the other player comes out with the puck, he tries to pass, it doesn't get there, he's near the man in front of the net, the man makes the play anyway. I can understand why a coach likes him, the instincts are there, but at some point execution has to matter.1 point

You know what that means. Antonio Brown is coming !!!! He'll be a GREAT fit in that locker room.1 point

One of my biggest fears is that two things happen simultaneously. One, he sells Ukraine out, stops funding them in any capacity, and allows Russia to continue to take over territory. Two, the war itself doesn't actually stop but he declares victory because he stops funding them and the American people buy his bull**** and respect him for it. So Russia is still at war with Ukraine and making further territorial gains without US support, but because so many Americans believe his lies, they actually think the war has ended because of Trump.1 point

LOL - I had one employer once where you had to navigate a fairly arcane website to get to your paycheck statement and once you got there it was a locked PDF you could look at but not download! This was back in the day when there was no "print to PDF" option in any browser. if you didn't have a license to the full version of Adobe Acrobat with Distiller ($$$) on your computer you just had to print and file a hard copy.1 point

The good news is this is a different team than last year. Outside of the Knicks game, they've been in them all, even the ones against very good teams like Boston and Indy. Definitely makes it more fun to watch (and more painful when they lose close ones). Hopefully this is the loss that puts us in the right draft spot to get a #1-3 lottery ball while Charlotte drops, lol.1 point

One of the things the Trumpublicans will definately try to do is privitize Medicare. They have actively pushing Medicare Advantage. MA is the biggest piece of **** disguised as "health insurance". Maybe Congress and the White House should also be enrolled in it as well. https://www.npr.org/sections/shots-health-news/2024/11/07/nx-s1-5183092/trump-election-2024-medicare-advantage0 points
