I'd rather they got paid a fair wage and be allowed to stay. If someone is productive and stays out of trouble, I want them to have a quick path to legal immigration.3 points

And speaking of fentanyl deaths, believe it or not, we can be capable of caring about two things at once. Both controlling and stopping the flow of dangerous fentanyl into the United States and creating a better healthcare system that doesn't allow 45,000 or more uninsured persons per year to die because of a lack of preventative coverage. As well, address the tens-of-thousands of people who are denied coverage or are underinsured and suffer as a result. We can and we should care about solving both problems.2 points

According to a Harvard study, an estimated 45,000 people die every single year because they don't get proper healthcare coverage or don't have healthcare insurance at all. The for-profit insurance industry makes money off of people's misery and illness. It denies coverage to many when they request that a doctor or medical provider try a lower cost option first. If they had their way, we would still be living in an era where insurance companies could deny healthcare to human beings on the basis of preexisting conditions. I don't condone the use of violence against another human being. I don't wish death upon United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson or any insurance executive. The fact of the matter is though, they wish death upon thousands of people each year when they deny them coverage or seek to profit off of the healthcare conditions and ailments of others. They have turned wellness and taking care of yourself into a profit seeking industry and made billions off of people's sickness and injuries. So when you mourn the passing of Brian Thompson, also mourn the tens-of-thousands of people who die each year because this country doesn't provide a universal system of healthcare. Mourn for all the people past and present who have suffered and died because they were denied coverage on the basis of a preexisting condition of some type by an insurance company. Mourn the people who were denied a certain treatment or medication because their insurance provider refused to cover it or said they needed to try a cheaper option first.2 points

Petzold mentioned that the Tigers are making a push for Ha Seong Kim. He's very interesting and will likely sign a little shorter term than other big names due to injury concerns.2 points

Seeing a lot of people on bsky saying it was the only place the South Korean coup was being reported. I can see why X would block it because Jan 6. I guess the news moved pretty fast. If true that the story was moving faster on bsky than elsewhere and being screened as well as could be -- judging by the pre-Elon twitter days standard --that is a very good thing.2 points

Baseball is talking about a Golden At-Bat It was described as "A manager can use one Golden At-Bat per game to slot their preferred batter into the order for a single at-bat. I’m in the on-deck circle with the bases loaded, and Juan Soto is on the bench. So you simply send Soto to the plate instead of me." I think they should allow a pitcher a free toss at a batter each game. If they hit him, it's counted as two balls. If they miss, just one ball. The pitcher has to signal the throw and it will be broadcast by the stadium announcer. The pitcher will get an extra 20 seconds to build tension and give fans a chance to get a viewing point. Anyone else have a totally stupid idea to make the game more entertaining?2 points

Exactly. Most NBA players who aren't on the Pistons are going to make wide open threes. It's a practice shot. I understand that Giannis is a problem with his ability to run directly through you and still get the call, but you at least have to guard the shooters. I saw so many missed rotations and defensive breakdowns, it would be impossible to count them all. This team put all their resources into offense over the summer and, other than Beasley, it hasn't gone well. They're a bottom third team on offense (bad shooting and turnovers). They've been top third on defense, but we really starting to see that come back to earth, no matter how much JB has them playing above their talent level on that end most nights. It's going to be a long December with Boston, New York, Boston, and Miami as the next 4 games. Then you've still got Utah, Phoenix, LA, Sac, Denver, and then Orlando on Jan 1. I could see this team going 2-8 during that stretch with a win over the Jazz at home and maybe stealing that Heat game. Hard to project too many more winnable games this month.1 point

South Korea having a largely conscripted army is possible mitigation. The trinity of war is harder to break if the line is blurred between the citizens and the armed forces. Also, and a larger part of this is that SK has a real national security challenge up north and this was probably seen as a terrible leader doing Trump games to stay in power.1 point

It's easy to get around DC by public transit most of the time. Driving there from Williamsburg, Va is a big pain in the arse because of traffic on I-95. The last couple of trips (primarily spouse work related) we've used AMTRAK from Richmond. Parking is reasonable ($10 a day, compared to exorbitant DC rates) and a 2 1/2 train ride. Maybe $35 if you book business class.1 point

One of the reasons I'm glad Logan is located in the center of the MBTA is that I don't have to spend an arm and a leg on Uber, Lyft, cabs, or whatever else people have to spend on. And it's a big reason I hope we can save public transportation. We've already lost much of the bus network that used to go just about anywhere in the country (including to my brother's town, population app. 900). And I'm guessing public transportation has a gigantic bullseye all over it, even more than it did before.1 point

I get reels/tiktoks on Vegas travel and such for some reason, the algorithm, and one of the things that's suggested on travel from the airport is to not rule out cabs. They have set prices where the ride share is dynamic and you could get hosed. But from memory they are on different levels at the airport so you should check before going down the wrong path. Last 2 times I went I used rideshare. The dynamic pricing is no joke. I was at one end of the strip after a long day and my hotel was at the North end. I saw that rain was on it's way so I booked quickly. In my car after it started to rain I checked again and it was $40.1 point

So, 220 for the Republicans, eight flipped from Democrats. And 215 Democrats, nine flipped from Republicans. More seats flipped to Democrats than Republicans. You don't say. I guess it wasn't such a mandate election predicated on the failure of Democratic Party ideals after all. Looks like it really was about something else.1 point

I'm glad to see you're a progressive now, advocating for a higher minimum wage as progressives like myself and others on this site and across the country have been doing for years. So that's good to see. Normally MAGA folks talk about how raising the minimum wage will just raise prices. So good that you're not making that argument. Furthermore, I've said before that I want to ensure all workers are paid a living wage. The trouble with farm and agriculture work is that most Americans don't want to do this type of backbreaking labor. There are many examples out there of farmers reporting back that they can't find or hire Americans who want to do agriculture work and so they end up needing to supplement part of their workforce with undocumented immigrants. To make the slavery comparison though is pretty low. Slaves were under bondage and not paid at all. Speaking of the south, it's your side, MAGA, that keeps flying the confederate flag everywhere and talking about southern heritage, which includes the enslavement of people. Not a heritage I'd want to fly a flag for, but that's just me.1 point

Employers of non illegals say the same thing, especially after the pandemic. A lot of people voluntarily retired, or hit normal retirement age (Baby Boomers especialy) and that created a big gap in available workers. People realized they didn't need that extra job. Employers whined that "nobody wants to work". No... "nobody wants to work for you". They had to fight for employees and they didn't like it.1 point

This. The real reason the illegals have been allowed to stay is that the business community knows removing them will drive up wages everywhere. The employers of illegals wail that Americans won't do the work implying that they are too lazy, but the truth is not that they are lazy, it's that being legal, they have choices. You will have to pay enough to make it a better choice to get legal workers out in those fields and into those hotels and construction jobs and American business doesn't like that idea one bit.1 point

Of course this is an overstatement, but there is an interesting tension dynamic going on inside liberalism. American Jews have generally comprised a chunk of liberal leadership, and have been in the vanguard of previous progressive movements, but the recent turn of a section of the progressive movement to victimology has been leveraged by the Arab American community to take the movement into anti-semitism, and interestingly, the old guard leadership is now pushing back. We have old traditional Jewish liberal regents at UM, people that would in the past have been considered progressives, pushing the 'U' back toward the mainstream, and the 20% of the faculty that comprise this new style victimology wing are screaming bloody murder.1 point

The argument you use sounds very similar to the south when talking about freeing slaves. You would rather under pay an illegal than pay a proper wage to an american.1 point

I'm sorry, what? You think the base of the Democratic party sympathizes with Putin and Asad?1 point
-
She's a sympathizer, which actually falls in line with the base of the Democratic party. I tend not to side with her on foreign policy but she is no different that many democratic congressmen/women. Barbara Lee is hailed for her Iraq vote, she isn't chastised for wanting women to stay covered and in the kitchen or gays to be persecuted. Add in the fact the FBI has been tapping her both under Trump and Biden. If there is any actual evidence outside of the sin of saying something you don't like, the intelligence community will ensure it comes out. The fact it didn't come out immediately when Trump mentioned the position has me guessing it's because they don't have any.1 point

The time to rebuild for 2026 is now (In Va and a few states 2025). Especially after the country has had a taste of the Trump/Musk/RFKjr Triad. I'm glad the South Korean people stood up to the coup. I hope the lessons learned is that in a democracy the armed forces should not get involved in domestic politics. Just like the national security community warned before January 6th.1 point

So many of Cades turnovers are just carelessness. Lazy dribbling 30 feet from the basket. Doesn't see the second defender coming when he's trying to back someone down. I can kind of accept turnovers if you're trying to force the pass or a play. But when so many of them are just laziness that has nothing to do with any type of play or anything it just gets a little ridiculous after a while.1 point

OK, hear me out. Suppose you take the all star game and tie World Series home field advantage to the outcome of the all star game? The league that wins the all star game gets 4 of the 7 games at home? How’s about that?1 point

He would have to clear waivers. The team that claims him would need to add him to their 53 man roster and take over the contract. It's unlikely Reynolds will be claimed, so he would be free to sign where he wants.1 point

I just love the way the media and MAGAS are going insane over this pardon. LOL. An effn felon is going to be president. Spare me the fake outrage.1 point

Dear lord, please let this be true ... Not because I am a huge MSNBC slappy—I almost never watch it—but I can't stomach the thought of this guy buying every major non-MAGA media vehicle in the country and turning them into Joe Rogan shock jock outlets, or whatever. I acknowledge that fascism-curious red hats would love for that to happen, but for the rest of us, please be reminded that's how the Nazi Germanies and the Soviet Unions of the world started out: they shut down media dissent first thing. After that, they rounded up the all the political opponents for political reasons and nobody heard a thing about that.1 point

Great video Chas! Kinda OT but Babe Ruth's swing is so sweet, you can argue whether or not it would work in today's game but in general how he transfers is weight, the lag he creates with his wrists/hands and how long he keeps the barrel in the zone is so amazing. For how heavy of bat he swung he probably still had insane bat speed.1 point

I don't think there could be a successful red hat invasion of Chicago. We have are too many people here, over three million. How many red hat vigilantes would it take to subdue the entire city? A hundred thousand? A quarter million? Half a million? How would they coordinate half a million vigilante red hats for an invasion of Chicago? Telegram? Discord? How do they train? How do they battle plan? They may have most of the guns but I don't think they're genius enough to overrun and ghettoize an entire city a la Warsaw. I think this one will have to remain relegated to your fantasy scenario. I think it would have to take Hegseth's army to have a chance of pulling something like that off, although I think it's more likely they simply bomb us into smithereens like Gaza than try to conquer us like Nanking.0 points
