  1. I think more people here respect religion than you think. Over in the religion thread, there was a long drawn out discussion about the existence of God and almost everyone either believed in God or thought that is reasonable to think that some kind of supreme being exists. There were only a couple of all out atheists in the discussion. What people don't like is people who don't seem to be very Christian pretending they are better than everyone else and telling people how to to behave and what to think.

  5. I'm not so naive to think bad people can't pursue beneficial political policies (often accidental to some other not so beneficial objective!) and vice versa, but to anyone who supports Trump *because* they think he is some kind of latter day Christian Paladin, I would say you are deluded.

  10. Ever since the species began to think, it has struggled with a way to justify a set of ethics/morals that seem to have a level of universal appeal. In religious systems this is easy - you don't have think too much about why something is right if God told you it was right. But as religiosity fades in Western culture, we'd sort of like to get to a way to argue for that system of morality that we are all comfortable with, that has evolved from the Hebrews and Greeks and for the last 2 millennia, to the western Christian church, by some non-religious means, but philosophically it's not that easy, though folks have been working at it for hundreds of years. To me when you say you are a 'cultural' Christian what you are saying is that you'd like to keep living in the moral milieu of the western Christian church but without the old man in the sky and the Church's downside baggage but you don't have a totally clear idea how to argue for your morality without them. (yes - I'm being a little arch - but just a little)

  17. Bregman may very well fail, but I don't think Baez is a good comparison. In fact, they are opposites in terms of skillsets. Baez has always had perhaps the worst plate discipline in baseball even when he was good. Bregman has close to the best BB/K ratio in the baseball throughout his career.

  18. I don't mind Congress Critters being well paid - there are a lot of places in the Country where $250K is not great shakes for a professional. But the payback ought to be tighter financial ethics rules and an end to private money campaign finance slush funds. I know - dream on.....

  25. I'm only bumping this up to mention that I'm doing a rewatch of BCS. I just started season 3, got through the first 2 seasons over the past week. My observations: 1) It's much better the second time around. Seems like the first time too much energy was spent trying to find links to BB and easter eggs, etc. You missed out on things. In the scene with Chuck where he records Jimmy confessing, he's got his house all taped up, etc. He makes a reference to "it all burning down". I remember feeling that the show dragged on and was a little slow. I am not feeling that this time. Maybe it was the week to week waiting. 2) The storylines were tighter than I remember. I thought certain things lingered on longer than they actually did. 3) It's easier to follow the cartel stuff which confused me at the time. 4) I am amazed at how much I forgot. Obviously I recall the overall storyline but smaller plotlines are fresh to me. I remember them immediately but several times I found myself anticipating almost as if I am watching for the first time. Just wanted to throw this out there to anybody else who is considering doing this. I am having a great time and can't wait to watch more every night.

  29. I used to love going to games and I live in Dearborn, the stadium is 15 minutes away from me. But I understand. It's so darn expensive now. My workplace has tickets and they will offer them up sometimes in an email. I can't go to weekday games (day or night) because of my work schedule. If there's a chance weekend tickets are offered, I'll jump, but that's rare. The games look great on my TV and if it's a stinker I can go get stuff done around the house, but realizing that going to a game is a hassle makes me feel like an old man. I turn 60 a week from today, so I guess I am.

  36. I don't see it happening, but I went looking for links as I haven't heard anything about Flaherty to Detroit being talked about. https://www.si.com/mlb/tigers/news/detroit-tigers-jack-flaherty-reunion-predicted-to-happen-in-free-agency It's the only one I can find, but the numbers aren't horrible, especially considering what we're seeing now a days. That said, I have no faith Illitch will open his wallet for even this modest contract of 5/115.

  42. Okay, so if we can beat the Bears and the 49ers... which seems doable even with our heavily depleted defense... and if we can get the Packers to beat the Vikings (wait a minutes for me to wash my hands after rooting for the Packers), then we could go into week 18 with the division sewn up.
