The storylines are going to be similar in September as they were this past September. KC, even with so many close wins, is king until they get taken down. Allen can’t beat Mahomes in playoffs. Lamar is better in the regular season. Lions are knocking on the door but need to take next step. Love isn’t the proven successor to Favre and Rodgers. The Cowboys disappoint. Bears are busted until showing otherwise. This season really hasn’t changed anything yet, nothing new has broken through.3 points

Jeezzz...it's not like signing him would hurt this team. Sign him or let a different team sign him. Then stash the money away. It's not like we'll spend it on a different player...Harris hasn't signed, or been allowed to sign, any position player to long term contract. I don't know why fans act like it's their money, ticket prices won't be cheaper if we cut payroll. I'm old enough to remember when fans couldn't wait until Miggys contract came off the books so we could sign better players. Fans are still waiting. Here comes Bregman, almost a perfect fit for Detroit. A position of need, a proven winner as well as a history with our manager. If the Tigers were serious, we would have signed him a long time ago. But sure, let's wait until Houston dumps salaries and re-signs him. We can all say how Harris was busy working on a trade for players with no trade clauses in their contract.2 points

The Tigers have not been held back by regrettable contracts. They have been held back by lack of player development and that seems to be changing fast.2 points

I would bet that Harris has been aware of Skubal's thoughts for some time They probably don't carry a lot of weight, but not zero either. Skubal is probably the best reason to get something done this winter rather than waiting until some time in the future when they no longer have the best pitcher in baseball.2 points

However, the not getting married and having kids out of wedlock thing is classic poor people self-destructive behavior. We have the rituals and the dogmas to cement the two kids together so they can muscle their way into the middle class together or perhaps secure their passage into the upper crust. Hard to do that as a single or as an unwed parent.2 points

I've always been a proponent of Manifest Destiny since a child... reading about the Louisiana Purchase, the Alaska Purchase, and the Mexican-American and Spanish-American Wars. And the 1812 disaster. I'm a Teddy Roosevelt Republican. A believer in American exceptionalism, and exceptionalism as a result of our Democracy and Capitalism. Build the Panama Canal... because we can do it. Carry a big stick but speak softly (and quite often... NOT so softly). I am a proponent of Manifest Destiny... And now Trump is pushing this? He's a freaking moron, fascist, incessant liar, and has been for over 40 years... But let's put that aside. Is he serious? Can he pull this off? And HOW would it get pulled off, if he were to actually accomplish this? My theories: 1) Can NOT buy "Greenland"... but COULD buy ALL of Greenland EXCEPT the currently populated areas. There would be a "State of Greenland" in a section of the island. Independent or under Danish control. It's mostly a small coastal region in the southeast of the island. The balance of the island would be purchased by the U.S. Trump wants the rest of the island for military bases, Arctic research and maritime control, exploitation of natural resources (rare earth metals and oil & gas deposits, etc...). He may even have to pay a 100-year royalties fee (1% just for argument's sake) to be paid for resources produced in American Greenland: half to Denmark and half to the "State of Greenland." Yep, I'm on board with this. 2) Panama Canal? Sorry, no chance. But he's pushing for better U.S. transit rates and higher Chinese transit rates. Yep, I'm on board with this. 3) Canada? No chance. But similar to Greenland, forget the heavily populated areas and concentrate only on the Artic areas. Which are vast. And for the same reasons as Greenland, offer to purchase the Provinces of Yukon, Nunavet, the Northwest Territories... and then sponsor support of Newfoundland and Labrador to vote and choose their government: Canadien, or American. Their choice. But the Yukon and Nunavet and NW Territories fall under the same type of Greenland Agreement... a sale, and royalties for any resources derived in these territories for a set number of years. Yep, I'm on board with this. Trump is pushing for something like this (too bad we lost the 1812 War with Britain...). Can he do it? Anyone else interested in Trump's version of "Manifest Destiny"?1 point

I know this is repeated info from the other day but today is the anniversary of the Apollo 1 fire. They died on the luanch pad during a plugs out test of their hardware. Plugs out means everything is wired up as it would be for a launch. They were having serious communication problems (among many other issues), the last meaningful thing said was Gus Grissom: "How are we gonna go to the moon if we can't talk between 3 buildings?!?" This fire led to many changes in culture at NASA and their contractors and many feel without their sacrifice we would have never landed on the moon because it forced them to change. Something bad would have happened a mission or two later, they would have missed the Kennedy Deadline, and motivation would have ended after that. Gus Grissom was a favorite among NASA, both management and crew (despite what you saw in The Right Stuff movie) and would have been picked to be the first man to walk on the moon if such a thing would have been possible. There was a reason he was to command the first Apollo mission. Ed White was a tremendous athlete, barely missed making the Olympics in hurdles. Strong as an ox and a good family man. Made America's first spacewalk. After his death LBJ insisted on having all 3 funerals at Arlington but Ed wanted to be buried at West Point, his alma mater. After some government hack pushed back on his widow during a phone call fo arrangements, Astronaut Frank Borman got on the phone and said "This is Frank Borman and Ed's going to be buried at West Point" and hung up. His wife never got over the accident, she had bad feelings before it happened, and she committed suicide years later. Roger Chafee never flew into space but he did fly photo missions during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was smart and Gus picked him so that meant something.1 point

all regimes with a taste for dictatorial power are. It follows from the need to control information. Intelligent people are the sources of information/narratives contrary to the regime's narratives. Exactly why Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Putin, all killed intellectuals with such vigor. Trumps proclivities are exactly the same even if his power to do anything about it is more limited, for the time being.1 point

I don't know if it would work, but I'd like to see the some of the minor penalties extended to 3 min when they have obvious intention. Most high sticks, slashes, trips, are accidental, and interference is basically a flow violation, but cross checks, charges, high hits and trips from behind are almost always intentional and I like to see penalties made stiffer on those.1 point

Color of Money was more of a romp. The Hustler was one the last of the great US film noir movies. I can't think of a film with more perfect casting, top to bottom.1 point

I won't share a scene from Slap Shot because I can't think of one that's appropriate but I watch this montage from Color Of Money all the time. The other great one, even better than this, is the Werewolves of London scene but that's mostly about Cruise and Scorcese's awesome direction and editing. He totally deserved the Oscar for this, it wasn't a career award, especially when you consider the other nominees. This is a great movie that I suggest you revisit. You get Tom Cruise right before Top Gun. He's raw.1 point

No, certainly not for several years. They hit $200M in 2016 but payroll started dropping after that and they certainly haven't been under anything close to luxury tax pressure since then. They may felt or claimed they were held back if internally they had picked a numbers they didn't want to go beyond in any particular year, but as a fan I don't care about that, that's just another way of saying "we don't want to spend the money."1 point

Assuming that the deal involves humane transport, which was Colombia's reason for turning back the migrants, I'm not even clear what was accomplished here given that Colombia was already assuming deportees prior to this. Looks like another case of the arsonists putting out the fire and expecting an Attaboy lol1 point

1973.. The United States, South Vietnam, Viet Cong and North Vietnam formally sign“An Agreement Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam” in Paris. Due to South Vietnam’s unwillingness to recognize the Viet Cong’s Provisional Revolutionary Government, all references to it were confined to a two-party version of the document signed by North Vietnam and the United States—the South Vietnamese were presented with a separate document that did not make reference to the Viet Cong government. This was part of Saigon’s long-time refusal to recognize the Viet Cong as a legitimate participant in the discussions to end the war. The settlement included a cease-fire throughout Vietnam. In addition, the United States agreed to the withdrawal of all U.S. troops and advisors (totaling about 23,700) and the dismantling of all U.S. bases within 60 days. In return, the North Vietnamese agreed to release all U.S. and other prisoners of war. https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/paris-peace-accords-signed?cmpid=email-hist-tdih-2025-0127|-01272025&om_rid=1 point

On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops enter Auschwitz, Poland, freeing the survivors of the network of concentration camps—and finally revealing to the world the depth of the horrors perpetrated there. Auschwitz was really a group of camps, designated I, II, and III. There were also 40 smaller “satellite” camps. It was at Auschwitz II, at Birkenau, established in October 1941, that the SS created a complex, monstrously orchestrated killing ground: 300 prison barracks; four “bathhouses” in which prisoners were gassed; corpse cellars; and cremating ovens. Thousands of prisoners were also used for medical experiments overseen and performed by the camp doctor, Josef Mengele, the “Angel of Death.” https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/soviets-liberate-auschwitz?cmpid=email-hist-tdih-2025-0127|-01272025&om_rid= A launch pad fire during Apollo program tests at Cape Canaveral, Florida, kills astronauts Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Edward H. The Eagles offense likely would have been rampant against the depleted Lions' defense. Maybe the Eagles would have run less and passed more than they did against the Commanders. And maybe not 55 points, but 40+ a real possibility. Lions offense would have been hard-pressed to score that many against this Eagles defense. Of course we will never know and I wish we had the chance to find out, as I'd always prefer losing one round later, but I get the feeling today might not have been a happy ending even if the Lions had got by Washington.1 point

It's just the whole "Walter Sobchak" routine that some vets or active duty do that's grating for me... Where they fall back on their service to short circuit any discussion that they don't like or doesn't comport to their views. Most aren't like this... a lot of vets that I know in my life are 3D people that don't have to center everything around their service. I've even seen cases where I've known people a long period of time before service even comes up. (My last neighbor before moving is a good example)1 point

That is what I guessed. Vets tend to prefer Republicans which I think has more to do with demographics than results. My father, in his later years, also did not hold anything against people who avoided the draft. He was not afraid to be critical of fellow veterans who turned out to be jackasses though. He didn't give a crap about politics. He thought it was stupid. He loved to play devils advocate with people from both parties.1 point

This is my neighborhood (where I grew up) in the Bronx…. (Eons ago) 👵 I had no idea that the gun Hill Road they’re referring to had a reason why it was called “Gun Hill Road”. Lol. 😂 =============================== January 25th 1777 Americans drag a cannon up a hill of Kingsbridge Road in the Bronx, New York to fight the British, giving added significance to the area's historic name of Greate Gunn Hill; the name of the road was changed to Gun Hill Road in 18751 point
