Our portion sizes are too large and we're a consumer culture. There's also an element of not being wasteful and "eat everything on your plate" as a thing of honor instead of eating until you are full. "Starving kids in China" etc. My special needs son will eat anything you put in front of him, especially vegetables, but is good at stopping when he's full. But if you tell him to eatmore, he will. Plenty of times we've had to correct my mohter in law for trying to make him "eat all of his fries" No. He's fine. We have too many restaurants and other eateries and they have to compete with each other. Even when I was a kid 40 years ago eating out was a rare thing. I admit it myself, I get lunch on Tuesday from my favorite local deli, a breakfast on Friday morning from our bagel place. We go out as a family most Saturdays, and when I visit my mom on Sunday I get her Taco Bell because she's 95 and needs to eat something hearty and their power bowls are good for her. I walk across the street to KFC and get a chicken sandwich. Mobil apps are awesome. But now we have door dash and uber eats teaching young peole they can get anything they want whenever and it'll cost more but they've normalized that cost. So they're being wasteful and unhealthy for a barely warm meal from Chipotle.

This is political and cultural not just because of the decrepit state of the US health system, which is bad enough taken on its own, but also, this is related to both a cultural anti-intelleculism that practically shames people for knowing about and embracing concepts like good nutrition and exercise, and to a culture that stresses individualism over community, a word too close to communism for some.

My bottom line is, until someone gives me examples of how other countries are taking advantage of the US that should lead to worldwide tariffs in response, I won’t believe it’s actually happening.

I am saying it's OK to be loyal and it can be admirable in the right circumstances. I love it when players stick with one team their entire career. Wanting to go to a winning team does not make someone a "winning player" and being loyal does not make someone soft. On the other hand, it's not necessary to be loyal if you don't like your situation. I am not criticizing the players for wanting to be associated with a winner. I might be criticizing fans who think that is an inherently admirable quality.

People who get their news only from Fox, Newsmax, or (Un)Truth Social are hearing how terrible and dangerous things are, reporting every single 'crime' undocumented immigrants commit with lots of exaggerations (and probably lies, but that's another story).

FWIW We just cancelled all sporting events today at the district I work for due to the weather. It's brutal out there and none of us liked the idea of high school kids throwing baseballs in this weather.

What I found interesting about Seattle's ballpark is that you still feel the April chill and still feel like you're outdoors even when the retractable roof is closed. It's just enough to block the rain.

If Thursday night, you're sitting at 83 points and the Habs are sitting at 85, with a game in hand you have a shot, however slim. If you're at 82 (or less) and they're at 86 (or more), the fat lady will be singing, if she's not already. To be abundantly clear, the path to the playoffs right now isn't pretty at all, and they have no one but themselves to blame for it. SO many games this year they should have won and shot themselves in the foot, or gave up a goal with 60 seconds or less remaining in a period. It feels like even if they stumbled into the playoffs, they would be lucky to steal one against the Caps, which is not how I felt last year with the Rangers. Such a frustrating team.

Ugh. That's about all I can come up with. It's not easy to be an ecologist when so many don't even pretend to know anything about it. Some don't even believe in ecosystems at all, let alone that destroying them will have serious consequences for all of us.

OK, I know we're supposed to be welcoming people like this into the fold and if they're doing some serious self reflection I'll be happy to do that. It's just hard, because it always seems like the only thing that sways them is when something affects them directly. As long as the bad stuff is directed at the 'others' pain is necessary or even good.
