  1. Tigers now have a 10.5 game lead over the Guardians, an 11.5 lead over the Twins, and a 12.5 lead over the Royals and the Royals did us the favor of beating the Dodgers today ensuring that we slipped back into a tie with the Dodgers for the best MLB record.

  3. Young Frankenstein is a Mel Brooks movie too. That one has a lot going for it. The scene where Gene Hackman plays the blind man that the monster finds in the cabin in the woods. I still will announce things like he does "CIGARS!"

  5. Not so sure we need a bat or starter. Wouldn’t give up much for either that’s for sure. What we need is two dependable relievers.

  8. Well they were able to dump Veleno’s useless play for a marginally better player on an expiring contract so they got Veleno off their books and an open roster spot not re-signing Smith. The goalie market is awful this offseason so Mrazek would shore up the tandem for another season unless Yzerman could get an upgrade. And he did! If the Gibson trade didn’t happen Mrazek would have most likely been better than what was available in free agency.

  14. So free agency has sorta kinda already started. Once the finals ended teams were allowed to start negotiating with any free agent that ended the season on their roster. At 6PM June 30th (Monday), teams are allowed to start negotiating with all free agents. But nobody can sign yet. July 1st - July 5th all rosters are frozen. No trades, cant sign anyone (Maybe your draft picks), etc. They use this time to collect the financials from last season and set the new salary cap. The cap is 51% of last years basketball related income. July 6th - This officially starts the new 2025-26 season. Teams can now sign free agents and make trades. Some of the trades announced the past week or so will now be completed. They changed restricted free agency a few years ago. I think now, when a restricted free agent signs an offer sheet with another team, his original team has two days to match it. Once a player signs an offer sheet, he can no longer be signed and traded. The old rules let players sign the offer sheet, then a S&T could be negotiated. Restricted free agents can be signed and traded, but it has to be negotiated before the offer sheet is signed. July 1st is when extensions can start for guys coming off of rookie contracts. Ivey and Duren are the only two Pistons players eligible for this. They can sign an extension up to the first regular season game. The leagues first game, not necessary the Pistons. If they don't sign an extension by then, they can no longer sign one and will enter restricted free agency next summer. October 31st - Teams have until Halloween to exercise team options for guys on rookie deals. This would be Holland, Sasser, and Thompson. Rookie contracts are 2 years guaranteed with team options for years 3 and 4. If an option is not picked up the player is a free agent next summer. June 29th, 2026 - Qualifying offers have to be offered to guys on rookie deals entering free agency next summer. So Duren and Ivey. Actually, Smith and Harper too. It's a 1-year offer at a price determined by the previous seasons salary. If a team doesn't offer it, the player enters free agency next summer as an unrestricted free agent instead of restricted. If a team/player can not negotiate a new contract next summer, the player can sign the QO, play the 1 season under it, and becomes an unrestricted free agent the next summer. There is a 36% chance I just made all of this up.

  15. Finally had a chance to check on game and saw we had a Bert, and by that he time I signed in it’s a Bert+1. Very pleased , as soft tossers like Ober always make me nervous, regardless of recent hitability. Plus Mize with the QS. A nice Saturday for a change.

  16. I'm old enough to remember when Riley Greene was overrated and should've been dropped to 7th in the order.

  18. FDS should tell Johnny Kane that if he giggles one more time, he's fired. He sounds like an idiot. He filled in for George Blaha on Piston basketball and he was pretty good. Just...keep him away from Comerica. And take Todd Jones with him.

  21. This source says the injury was a partial laceration rather than a tear. I don't know the difference in recovery/long term prognosis, but the source says he is back on the ice and skating. https://rg.org/news/hockey/carter-bear-on-recovery-mindset-and-his-nhl-draft-dream Seems like a good kid, and seems like he has the kind of mental resilience and mindset that maybe the current Wings roster lacks. But, like Buddha says, he's 18 and won't be with the big club until he is at least 20, maybe 21. He needs a lot of time in the weight room.

  22. Looks like they can still keep him, but it puts them in the 2nd apron. I think they would want to avoid that, so they would probably let him go.

  23. not sure why they still call it a salary "cap" when it doesnt "cap" anything. its more of a salary limit suggestion.

  31. well that is the same argument that has been made since forever and since 2009 - we cannot increase the minimum wage because it would destroy the economy and cause massive inflation, so, while corporate profits and executive pay soar, you need to keep working for the same minimum wage that is now OLDER than Uber and Instagram. NYC's will be $17 next year, so it would take a few years to get to $30

  32. I’m making 2024 the year I renew my penchant for losing myself in some good books (most new, but also some “old” re-reads), with a smattering of banned books in the mix. I gifted about a dozen books this year for Christmas also. I’ll be borrowing some of them back, lol, because a few I haven’t read in probably 30-50 years. throughout my life, I would read a pretty large number of books per year, but then, somewhere around 15-20 years ago it was something akin to when marathon runners say that they “hit the wall“. That’s what it felt like to me… Suddenly I couldn’t pick up a book and read more than 10 pages and retain anything that that I just read. totally shocked me, and I’ve tried with very limited success to read a book here and there for these past years. I’m definitely missing them in my life. So this year I’m going to find a way to get that mindset back. It was only recently, like in the last couple of months, that finally a couple friends of mine, some compatriots, came up with An explanation for my sudden drop in reading. I don’t know why I never made this connection, but their thoughts were that menopause did this to me. Jesus. I realize the timing might be about right. Well , it’s time for me to get over it! 🤓 i’m starting with “The beekeeper of Aleppo.” And I think the next book I’ll read after this will be “To Kill a Mockingbird.” My 3rd will be a re-read of “Slaughterhouse Five”.
