  2. If you think wasting money on pitchers is exclusively a Harris problem, I encourage you to look around the league. Heck, he has a much better hit rate here than his predecessor!

  3. I honestly don't think Skubal is going to get a 10 year deal. I think he will break the AAV and total $ records, but think he may "only" get 6-7 years for $330 (at 7 that's $47 mil/yr).

  11. notorious big spenders tampa bay and milwaukee currently have the best records in the AL and NL. not sure how the yankees and mets can be expected to compete.

  12. Minnesota loses. Cleveland loses. Texas loses. And bonus, Red Sox lose. Tigers now all alone in second place, and only one game out of a playoff spot. Great day to be a Tigers fan.

  17. And there are more players who he wants to be in the line-up every day. This is what we have always said. Constantly changing line-ups is not so much a deliberate strategy as it is a way to deal with a sub-par roster

  19. exactly. i think the tigers are trending in that direction too. not spending $300 million on a 30 year old starting pitcher and instead turning him into prospect ammo is a good sign.

  20. Hinch keeps using pretty much the same line-up all the time now and they are winning. Coincidence?

  21. While I think the game has some problems - too many injuries, too few balls in play and too much gambling to name a few - I think the Dodgers dominance is way overstated. They have won three championships this century and they barely won last year. The Giants have done that too.

  24. The recent offensive surge has not been led by the two mainstays of the Avila rebuild, has it? Harris' guys (Clark and McGonigle) are both very tough ABs for children who are unable to rent cars.

  25. I don't really buy this. Pop star idolization is as high or higher today than it ever was, young people still attach to stars like Swift as strongly as the bobby soxers did to Sinatra in the 30's. No reason to at to believe it's any different in sports than it ever was. The species does not evolve very fast.

  27. I can’t believe how long ago - how young I was - when I first read this Bradbury short. Never, ever forgot it. So vivid. Never imagined then I’d live beyond August 5, 2026.

  28. you and I are old farts - we can rationalize everything. Tell that to the 10 yr old whose hero is off to NY or LA. He'll never have the experience we had with a Kaline or Trammell and tell me he won't be left feeling indifferent in a couple of decades when he has the money to buy his own tickets

  29. Jobe didn't throw enough strikes, lots of full counts, but the fast ball had tons of life. He'd come up and in on RH hitters and completely tie them up

  30. With Cleveland’s loss, we’ve gained at least 3 games in the last 10 on every team ahead of and 1 game behind us in contention for the 3rd Wild Card. We gained 4 on Cleveland.

  38. I agree with this. I do understand that some have never seen a championship and would like to see one, but I personally don't believe that winning a championship is the only thing that matters. I want them to have an entertaining team with a chance to win most years, but baseball can still be satisfying without a championship.

  39. I just can’t see the wisdom in giving a gigantic long-term contract to a man who will next year be 30 years old who’s had multiple arm surgeries. Same goes for Mize. I have moved on. I am all for the youth movement, even though they’re often returning from various surgeries or will inevitably face them. I’m willing to live with the fact that the Tigers will never be in the upper tier of the handful of teams that can spend this kind of money. I’m also tired of believing that winning the World Series is the only reason for a club’s existence. This is easy for me because I have enjoyed World Series championships twice in my life and it’s great and I want that for all the rest of you who have not experienced it. But for me personally, the drama of the day in day out grit and joy and disappointment of the game is reward enough. I’m OK with downsizing my expectations and being cool with what happens. And it’s not like I have much choice in this.
