Probably not a wise move my Olivares there with 2 outs but I will certainly take it! And Tork pops up the first pitch, ugh atleast he was aggressive and didn't take another first pitch strike. -
IF Whitmore insists on dominating the ball like he did at Villanova than he wouldn't be the best fit but I think the hope is that playing with guys like Ivey and Cade who should be dominating the ball along with HOPEFULLY Monty and Co.'s coaching that he will realize that he doesn't have to do that. If that were to happen I think he would fit nicely with his explosiveness and shooting.

Yeah looked like he was underneath it just a tad, probably didn't expect it not to drop at all. -

Damn Torkelson swung through a cookie for strike 3. -
Throughout the league I know there have definitely been trades where teams use pitching prospects for proven MLB bats but if the argument is that you can draft a pitcher and flip him for another team's hitting prospect then I'm not sure that happens all that often. Sounds good in theory though.
-
I figured the teams had that info but I just wasn't sure that the statcast numbers that we see on TV or Savant shows(like where it would be hit at certain parks) factors that in. And yeah the batters eye definitely makes a difference and something that you can't quantify.

I think the major factor in what the Pistons will do is if they are just taking who they feel is the number 1 prospect on their board regardless of fit or if they are factoring in fit and needs. You can make an argument for either, yes the record was horrible but they do seemingly have 3 potential pieces so it's not like a terrible team with starting from scratch so maybe you should try to draft for guys that fit around those pieces. OTOH you could argue that due to that horrible record the last few years that even though you have 3 potential pieces you shouldn't worry about fit and just draft who you feel is the most talented player and worry about fit down the road. If you go with the former it really doesn't make any sense to me to draft Jarace or Amen cause they don't fit nearly as well as say a Whitmore, Hendricks or even Ausar. If the Pistons mindset is the latter and feel that both are just better prospects and that's all that matters then ultimately you have to go with 1 of them.

I'm not real familiar with the stuff they use in the MLB but as an avid golfer who routinely works with Trackman and other launch monitors I know you can adjust them to the weather by putting in current weather information so when they spit out the numbers they already factor that in and it is usually accurate down to a yard or two.

Miggy? I put a question mark cause although Andrew Miller was the centerpiece they also through in Maybin who was a top 10 prospect as well so it wasn't just the hot pitching prospect.

It's worth noting that even if Skenes does get a major injury like TJ which history suggests with recent pitcher will happen it doesn't mean he isn't going to work out in the long run. To me the thing that worries me more about drafting a pitcher is just how SP's are used in general in this day and age. The fact that they throw less innings than ever means that they can't have the same impact that they otherwise would even if they do turn out to be really good. With all that said it would take a real generational type pitcher for me to take at 3 but Skenes appears to be just that which is why I'd be fine with taking him if Crews and Langford go 1-2.

Yeah that is true but in general I think it is likely that a 1B that is great at scooping and/or has plus extension but bad fielding range will save more bad throws from base hits than hits they give up due to the range, or at the very least it won't be a major difference. Also even if you get to those balls it's not always a sure out cause guys will often beat the pitcher to the bag on the exchange. -

On top of that they are 0-14 in his starts so we know how this one is going to end for the Tigers. -

Everybody knows that your optimal lineup is CF, 2B, 1B/DH, DH/1B, RF, 3B, LF, SS/C, C/SS. You have your speedster leading off, followed by the gritty 2B that "knows how to handle the bat" followed by the big sluggers, your catcher bats at the bottom cause his only real job is "calling a good game" along with the light hitting SS who while not having much pop "makes the pitchers work" during his ABs and like the CF is a terror on the base paths. -
Henning's Comerica Park bit is what annoys me the most now. Like the other day somebody on the Tigers hit a 410ft double and he was of course complaining about the dimensions, but when you look at the statcast projected HR number it only would've been HR in like a third or less of the parks due to the location it was hit so if you are going to complain about the dimensions complain then complain about it about all MLB parks in general. He also still cites how it was specifically built with those to lure in FA pitchers, that may or may not be true but even if it was it has since been moved in twice now so the park is completely different than it was when it was built.

2023 Detroit Tigers Regular Season Discussion Thread

I know many of the defensive metrics hate Tork's defense but that scooping stat is a big deal to me and arguably the most important thing in my eyes when it comes to defense for a 1B. I think the ability to prevent bad throws from being base hits has a far bigger impact on the game than any balls you potentially don't get to in the field. -
I'd be OK with one of the twins just cause of their massive upside but I wouldn't take Black over Whitmore or Hendricks.
-
I'd be fine taking Skenes at 3 as long as it isn't over Langford. Yeah there is obvious injury concerns with pitchers but there are concerns with a High School bat as well no matter how talented they are, not of the injury variety but just them hitting their potential at the MLB level.

The NTC certainly didn't help things but I'm not so sure it made a major difference. Reason being is you would assume if you were going to trade for a guy that is demanding a trade and makes the amount of money Beal does you want to be certain that he is motivated and wants to play for you before you finalize it anyway. Also I just think any of the teams that would realistically want to trade for a 30 year old on a major contract would be a contender and a place Beal would've accepted to play at anyway. The real killer was his contract and the fact that teams that would be interested didn't have a ton of real assets to give back without breaking up their current core.

Yeah it isn't much but depending on the shoes you could get .5 to inch taller than a different pair. Also I don't think alot of people know but your height can decrease by .5 to 3/4 of an inch from the time you wake up till the time you go to bed due to gravity compacting your spine. That number is for an average height person for people like basketball players that are well over 6' it could be more drastic so if you get measured early in the morning vs. late afternoon it can make a difference as well.

Holy crap that pitch to end the game was one of the nastiest I ever seen. Started off in the middle of the plate only to disappear inside near the end....at 103MPH!! How and the hell do you hit that? -
Yeah I knew you weren't before but I thought you may have had a change of heart when you brought him up being picked ahead of us. I like his overall scouting report but I still think back to the numbers you brought up months ago about how he fared down the stretch and against better competition and that worries me alot probably more than his off the court stuff.
-
Also I saw Vecenie compare him to a young Iguodala, I think that's a fair comp and would obviously be very pleased if we took him and he turned into that.
-
I' wouldn't hate the pick, his shooting is the obvious question mark but you atleast know you will get elite athleticism and likely great defense with him so even if his shot never pans out he should still be a useful player. Would you take him over Miller if he were to drop to us?
