Lions 2022 Offseason Thread

Different sport but Kevin Durant came back from his achilles injury looking just as good it not better than he did before.

Of course DB seems like that would be the worst position possible to suffer that type of injury considering the athleticism needed to play that position and all the cutting and change of direction needed.

All we can do is hope, at this point anything we get from him almost seems like a bonus since everybody basically wrote him off after the injury.

I was looking at pending free agents and it's obviously still too early to speculate who will and won't be available. However, going off the pending list, there are a couple of names, if they become available, I would love to see the Lions target. I was looking at cutting Flowers and Vatai to save on the cap and make two "splash" or high priced signings to replace them and then fill out the rest of free agency with moves on mid to lower level players.

Top Tier Players

Carleton Davis: Starting CB/Tampa Bay. Davis is a guy who could become our new #1 CB and be opposite Amani Oruwariye.

Marcus Williams: Starting FS/New Orleans. Williams could be a cap casualty in New Orleans and is a guy who could become our new starting FS or SS depending on where we want to slide Tracy Walker. This would also allow us to cut Will Harris and move on from yet another lousy Quinn draft pick.

Jessie Bates III: Starting SS/Cincinnati. Cincinnati has the cap space to resign Bates and he's been a very good starter for them, so I assume they will. However, if he became available, I'd put him and Marcus Williams at the top of my list of players to target and would sign one of the two if both were available.

Tier-Two Free Agents

Marquez Valdez-Scantling: WR/Green Bay. Much like Tyrell Williams was supposed to be, Valdez-Scantling can be our new big play, deep ball specialist. He'll never be a volume receiver, but I think utilizing him as a downfield threat and in big play situations opposite St. Brown and whomever we draft (assuming we do) would be a nice pickup for this team. I wonder if he walks from Green Bay if Rodgers goes. I would assume he wouldn't want to stick around a rebuilding GB team without Aaron Rodgers.

Kenny Young: Left ILB/Denver. Young could potentially slide into the left side and replace Derrick Barnes. Young is a solid starter who, from what I've read and seen of him, can cover in space and run and chase guys down given his speed and athleticism. Unlike the big, plodding LB's on Bob Quinn's past, Young fits the new mold of an NFL LB with speed and athleticism.

Marcus Williams would be an interesting target. He's got the obvious connection to Campbell and Glenn. I don't see Wil Harris getting cut. He's on a rookie contract. He'll be ok in a reserve roll.

I would like to see Josh Reynolds brought back. Goff's improvement didn't just coincide with Campbell calling plays but also bringing on Reynolds. We also saw increased output from St Brown. Reynolds had an underrated impact on this team.

i would be wary of green bay receivers not named davonte adams.  rogers makes them all look better than they are.

allen robinson is a free agent.  he had an injury filled year last year but might be less expensive this time around.

i think the draft should hopefully net them at least one solid receiver.  maybe two.

So Calvin got a free ride to the HOF?

Not sure the point being made here, but Johnson was a generational talent putting up big numbers before Stafford and in the two seasons were Stafford missed a lot of time. Golladay was a receiver who never got separation. Guys like Tyrell Williams and Perriman averaged more yards of separation. Golladay is a receiver who is good at catching the ball in traffic and winning those 50/50 throws. Stafford is a gun slinger who can fit it in those tight windows. The combination worked well. Golden Tate is another receiver we forget that fell off rather dramatically after leaving Stafford and the Giants got burned on that one as well. Marvin Jones is the only one to really maintain his production.

I really would like  atleast 1 more year of Glenn working with our young DBs but I would be happy for him if he got a HC job.

I think he is deserving of it, there may be a few guys more deserving based on longer track records but based on what he did here with the guys he had to work with I think he proved he is a great coach. It's hard to understate just how little of talent we had out there yet on most occasions the defense atleast looked fairly respectable.

Flip the script, Payton to Detroit as the next OC. Book it! 😄

Someone's going to make the call to Payton about being the OC or lining him up to be their coach in the future. No reason Brad and Sheila can't pick up the phone or work any mutual connections they have with Sean.

If Glenn is hired by the Saints (or anyone), I believe we would receive a 3rd round comp pick in 2022 and 2023. Would make losing him a little easier, though I would still like to keep him.

To get draft picks like that I believe they need to be with the team for at least 2 seasons.

It has to be asked, so I'm just going to ask it. Would you fire Dan Campbell if you had the opportunity to bring Sean Payton in as the Head Coach?

I would not. Sends a bad message to your players that a well liked coach is going to be discarded after one year because someone potentially better came along.

Oh not suggesting he would, just saying that IF it was something stress related and he was just burned out from the high demands and responsibility of being a HC that being a OC here wouldn't be a bad option for him in that regard.  But yeah it's totally not gonna happen and Im 90%sure he's just going to head to tv.

He'll be back in a year or two. Brees is gone and the Saints are in a terrible mess salary cap wise. He probably decided to bail on that train wreck. My prediction, barring some Super Bowl run, Mike McCarthy is fired and Payton is brough back to Dallas.

Speaking of that I saw this tweet and it made me laugh.

I don't think Payton would do it.  I think he'll be out of coaching for a few years, if not for good.   Payton & Campbell are friends, even if the Lions could do it without giving up a valuable draft pick, Payton wouldn't do that to Campbell.   If he wanted to be a Head Coach that badly, he would not have quit the Saints.
