Sewald is being slept on and who I was referring to. Montero I could take or leave, but the price was right.

Sewald is a fine cheap acquisition.  I am just not confident he'll contribute a lot coming off an injury.

Not a bad trade prospect capital-wise

Finnegan is kind of a meh closer, but should be fine given the way Hinch uses the buillpen.  I still hope they are not done even if it's just another guy at his level.

Chris Fetters is going to be one busy guy saving the careers of all these new pitchers.........................

He's gonna need a better contract.

Remember when the FO set up success for the nextvdecade by fleecing the Astros by trading a washed up Verlander for a future perennial CY Young candidate, a future multiple All Star OFer, and a solid catcher?

Almost as great as when Avila traded Martinez for those amazing prospects that blossomed into stars.

Just trade the minors leaguers.  Chances are, no one will ever miss them.

I don't ever remember seeing Finnegan pitch so no opinion. His stats look like he's had a few good seasons, hopefully with our defense behind him he'll be effective. It looks like maybe as a set-up, 8th inning type? I sure hope he has....a change up. 🤣🤣

Minor league players are cost controlled for several seasons. Established players come with an expensive price tag and are either entering free agency or on long and expensive contracts. Baseball is a business to make as much money as possible. Winning is great but...meh...fans will show up anyway.

I don’t know why I should be upset or even critical because what’s happening — thus far — is exactly what I thought would happen, even though I know less about this stuff than most people on this board.

When the broadcasting crew talks about this stuff, of course they have to hype up the possibilities because they can’t really say that the Tigers will be conservative and cheap. And it’s pleasing to jump on board that train.

But I don’t think they’re going to fold and abandon the strategy that has brought them this far at the major league level, as well as dragging the minor league system out of the back waters and doldrums and made it the envy of MLB.

There’s still another 4 1/2 hours to go so I guess we’ll just see.

I like the Paddack and Finnigan deals -- they're solid additions at reasonable costs -- but the others are head-scratchers. I hope there's another deal to come before the deadline, but my gut says they're probably done.

I wonder what Harris sees in Finnigan that he doesn't see in David Bednar. Bednar is clearly the better pitcher in my view. Is he just not willing to paid the Pied Pirate for Bednar?

It takes two to tango. I wonder if Harris is willing but the difference in demand is too much.

Bednar still being available suggests that the Pirates asking price is currently too high. Any contending team would love to add him, yet none have.

A reasonable price tag

Did we lose anything in Randall?

yes. but have to believe they can replace him by his expected 2027 eta

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 40 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

Like fellow Tigers pitching prospect Troy Melton, Randall was a catcher growing up before taking his strong arm out from behind the plate and onto the mound. After two years in the bullpen at the University of Arizona, he transferred to the University of San Diego and became a workhorse starter and hit the scouting radar. The Tigers selected him in the third round and signed him for a $700,000 bonus, then gave him a cameo appearance with four innings at Single-A Lakeland at season’s end.

Randall is a classic power sinker-slider pitcher with a low three-quarter delivery and rotation, but he actually saw an uptick in his strikeout rate when he became a starter at San Diego. His heavy sinker sat around 94-95 mph but has been known to ramp up to 98 and induces a ton of ground balls. His high-spin slider is a nice swing-and-miss pitch off the sinker. He has a feel for a changeup, but his ability to develop it could determine whether he ends up a starter or reliever as he advances. Part of what separated Randall as a starter in college was his ability to repeat his stuff and hold his velocity late into starts.

The Tigers want to give Randall a chance as a starter, with a repertoire and style that compares to former Cleveland starter Justin Masterson. But with Randall’s big body frame and sinker/slider approach, he draws a natural comparison to current Tigers reliever Jason Foley. He’s older for his Draft class, which gives him a chance to move through the lower levels quickly if he has success.
