Dangerous to compare anyone to Verlander. In fact I think this recent stretch with Verlander, Scherzer and Kershaw all in the league at the same time has been a quite the outlier that has maybe skewed our perceptions of what is likely. There are a fair number of guys that have a few outstanding years, but even most of them never achieve the extended greatness those three have. In fact with the relentless drive for more spin, it seems likely even fewer guys are going to last. Though that might be a factor in Skubal's favor - he does not throw a lot of side spin - only about 12% sliders. Edited October 13 by gehringer_2 Quote
Tigermojo Posted October 13 Posted October 13 Just watched the end of season press conference and I'm convinced Harris and Hinch are the right guys for the job. Going for the World Series next year! 2 Quote

With respect to Skubal, is that... He has tree trunk legs and drives his pitches with his legs... Just like Nolan Ryan. Which says NOTHING about Skubal's future potential longevity, or lack thereof... I'm just... Sayin'... 2 Quote
theroundsquare Posted October 13 Posted October 13 I wonder who Arizona wanted. pretty much any of the Tigers controllable players performed better than Suarez did down the stretch 1 Quote

papalawrence Posted October 13 Posted October 13 I do wish Harris would say something along the lines of: "Of course we'd love to keep Tarik long term. We'll try. We love him. We can't be sure of what he wants." Quote
lordstanley Posted October 13 Posted October 13 (edited) Ahh, nice fake by JVR, 2-0 Wings! Oops, now I have to find a way to explain how this post is Tigers-related, rather than admit posting in wrong forum by mistake. Edited October 13 by lordstanley 1 Quote

romad1 Posted October 13 Posted October 13 The Deadline of 2025 being such a bust will hopefully give Harris a teachable moment. To think Charlie Morton and Chris Paddack were taking up SP innings for us in a pennant race. Quote

The TV revenue is low, the attendence was lagging for a good team, and there might be more pressing priorities for Chris to spending money on, given he has a new chippie. I'm sorry, am I reading this right? Are you actually suggesting that Chris Ilitch will choose not to spend on the team because he's going to spend the money on some broad instead? That sounds absolutely bonkers to me. 1 Quote

I bet the Tigers payroll is about to explode. Scott Harris tried to get by cheap the last couple of years with free agent pitchers but that money is off the books, Maeda and Cobb. Spend that money, and more, on a #2 and #5 type SP. Add it a couple bullpen arms, which is a crapshoot and then go after a RH 3rd base power hitter....Suarez? Quote

Technically, Toronto and Seattle are playing for the American League Pennant. Divisional races are just one step towards a pennant. Quote

Would be funny to see him basically talk **** about Suarez just to see him sign him in the off season Quote
gehringer_2 Posted October 14 Posted October 14 decent interview by Harris and Hinch. One thing that left me scratching my head though was what Harris meant about 'improving the environment' for MiLB players on call-up to the Tigers. He raised it as a significant concern but never really fleshed out any specifics of what he was talking about. And there still seems to be a lot of daylight between Harris' "control the zone" and Hinch's "Get a good pitch to hit". Seems to me you are not controlling the zone if you are waiting for one pitch in one place, but whatever. Quote

Harris seems like a smart guy, but he throws around a lot of terminology in interviews which doesn't necessarily mean a lot He has talking about control the zone for years and I don't really see the Tigers doing that. I would have liked to hear Hinch talk more. Quote

I heard him say it has improved since Greene and Tork first came up, and still needs to be improved. I took it as, in part a dig at AA and the former regime and the context they left. He also said a lot of positive changes have taken place over the past 3 years, and will continue to improve. He subtly toots his own horn at times. He has changed the culture and it's much more positive. But it's also true that most of the player impact has come from AA's drafts. Harris has been so-so with trades, good with player development, and potentially very good with drafting, but that's ultimately yet to be shown at the big league level. Hinch and Fetter deserve significant credit with the positive outcomes so far. Edited October 14 by papalawrence Quote

Jimbo Posted October 14 Posted October 14 I don't like the idea of giving a pitcher that will be almost 30 a 10 year contract. So I want to make that clear first. Especially with smaller market team that can't absorb that contract in the later years. I will say this though that giving any player a 10 year contract for a small market team is bad. Although if when you made the Cabrera contract, would you rather have Verlander and/or Scherzer or Cabrera? My opinion is the pitchers. Now its easy to say now after the results. I do understand that pitchers (especially high velocity pitchers) seem to fan out a lot sooner and if Cabrera could of controlled his weight we could of gotten more years out of him. Although if your a Tigers fan, who would you compare Skubal to besides Verlander? Verlander was a little younger when he started to dominate although I think Skubal has been slightly more dominant at this point and doesn't seem to be slowing down. The Tigers could spend some $ next year and go for a world series with Skubal and then let him test out FA while we retool in 2027 and let our top farm system go into the next run. It looks like some of the top young guys could also join our team next year either at the beginning or at some point. 16 hours ago, gehringer_2 said: Dangerous to compare anyone to Verlander. IdahoBert Posted October 14 Posted October 14 In the press conference I like the emphasis on making contact. Also I don’t know where they had this press conference or if they changed something, but the audibility of those asking questions is vastly superior than to what we usually experienced in Comerica Park during the regular season. I frequently noticed that when the team was on the road, you could actually hear the press corps asking questions whereas at Comerica you couldn’t. It was also kind of funny when the lights went out. oblong Posted October 14 Posted October 14 They were probably in the Tiger Club or one of the restaurants downstairs yesterday. During the season they are near the clubhouse. 1 Quote
Edman85 Posted October 14 Posted October 14 The payroll is likely to go up just by virtue of something like 14 guys being arb eligible. Not all will get tendered, but that is a natural raise. Quote
