We don't have time travel, so it's not possible to do do that.  If we did, I am pretty sure that most players from the early eras of the game would fail today.  I am interested in the best way to rank players across different eras.  I don't think it's fair or particularly interesting to base it on "what would Honus Wagner be like if they transported him to today".

this. Baseball, hitting especially,  probably more than most sports, depends on a set of genetic gifts that are likely not distributed any differently in the population today than they ever were. Ted Williams had extraordinary vision capacity that set him apart and allowed him to excel as a hitter. In today's world he would still have that extra-ordinary vision that would set him apart and if he took advantage of all the  science, equipment and training tech available today, that extraordinary perceptual apparatus would stlll put him head and shoulders above 99% of the hitters in today's game, just like it did in 1938.

Red Sox getting close to picking up Rutschman. Wonder what they're sending back? Marcelo Mayer?

Jake Rogers made Rutschman available? Impressive.

rare in-division trade amongst two competitors trying to win a Wild Card.

There is a conspiracy theory floating that owners wanted Skubal to end up with LAD to further emphasize the need for a salary cap. It's not just social media fodder, it includes folks like Bob Costas and Foul Territory.

The Dodgers are in such an exclusive position. They make mega zillions from their TV concract and can just defer all new player concracts to 2040+. They should have an all star roster. It's an unfare system for sure.

How many of you are going to watch Skubal pitch vs the Cubs tomorrow eve? If I'm done with work fast enough I will watch

Only if Harry Carey and Steve Stone do the Broadcast

He's not a Tiger so why would I watch?

I will. He was a superstar that I followed for several years. Just like JV, I will still follow, and hope the Dodgers lose 1-0. I hate the Dodgers

And don't forget the revenue from their Japanese market. One of their execs said they've made more than the 700 million owed to Ohtani already. So perhaps there is (wink-wink) validity to the owners being ok with Skubal to LAD

Skubal is not dead to me. He did not plead for this trade. But I don’t care what he does now.

I am not a baseball fan in general. I am a Detroit Tigers fan specifically and for me baseball in general is just noise.

I’m not necessarily proud of this, but what other teams and players on other teams are doing has no impact on me.

I would like to see us make the playoffs, but I don’t expect our club to get far.

I think if we traded him before the year started, we could have had De Paula. But since we waited, we got less (which is how it works). I think this is the best return we could have gotten as well because we waited to deal him. Before the year, I think we could have gotten the full Wrobleski, De Paula, Ryan, Smith package. Hindsight is always easier though ehh.

Using a timeline like that for our rebuilds they ought to trade Melton today and kick off the Melton rebuild.

How well Skubal pitches in Game 1 of this year's World Series between the Dodgers and the Tigers will have an impact on you though.

In the greatest double cross since Thomas Stanley, Skubal serves meatballs to Detroit allowing a WS win then resigns with the Tigers. Hope, Skubal and a World Series win. It's will be talked about for the ages

Stone and Benetti were very good as well

I'm sure they were an improvement over Hawk and whomever. I did like Wimpy when we lived there however

Skubal has no real regular season value to the Dodgers. They gave Tucker $60 mill and he's been awful and it hasn't mattered. They knew going into the season they had the best roster in baseball. Skubals value is 100% about his post season value. They would not have given up a bigger package in the off season than at the deadline.

I think we'll agree to disagree. I think if Skubal was made available to everyone before this year started, I think someone would have ponied up more since they'd get the full year out of him. I'm not necessarily saying just the Dodgers.... But I guess we'll never know.

They've got a lot of prospects I really like...

Which we won't get for Mize...

But if a guy can dream a little... LOVE Demetrio Crisantes, David Hagaman, and Mitch Bratt.

If we could also give them Torres and Jansen along with Mize to get those guys... yes please.

(They are also looking for a RH bat and reliever help I believe...).
