  2. Luke Jackson was pitching to AJ Pollock. Yes. A Jackson/Pollock matchup.

  3. I always liked Dusty Baker and felt he was always underappreciated so if the Astros win I will be cool with it, seeing the Red Sox and their crappy fans suffer makes it that much sweeter. d

  4. Pointing out the things you liked that Trump did while president is like being happy about the fact that a guy that spent 4 yrs trying to burn down your house washed your car one day.

  5. More importantly, of course, he had a 58 OPS+ this year and 73 lifetime.

  6. I don't like the post-season because it has gotten too long and the whole thing just seems meaningless. The Red Sox and Braves will probably make the World Series because they got hot at the right time. The media will claim that they won because they wanted it more or they play the game right or some kind of silly narrative. It's fun if the Tigers are in it. If the Tigers sneak in with 88 wins and then win the World Series, it will be entertaining, but it won't feel like a true championship like 68 or 84.

  8. they started calling above the waist a number of years ago - about the same time that they started getting guys out on the swing and miss high fastball. The two things are directly related. A batter never has to swing at a ball above the waist 20yr ago because they were not called strikes. They have to swing now because the zone is called up higher - which the graphic demonstrates. The high strike was also called back in the 60's, in part because of the umpires position with the external balloon chest protector.

  9. Remember when Michael said this to his idiot brother-in-law, Carlo, to let him know that Michael was aware that Carlo had deliberately helped to set up Sonny at the causeway toll booth: "You have to answer for Santino, Carlo". Answer for. Nothing specific there, but you fear the worst. No matter what other trouble this James Adducci ever gets into for the rest of his life, it pales into insignificance compared to this: he has to answer for attempting to impersonate Jim Adduci.

  10. knock on wood, like I always say when I do this, but MI's 7 day average is at a 2 week low. I track the daily updates, not the official totals. The difference is the daily updates is just the # of positives returned that day. When they get logged offically they are added to the date of first symptoms. But to detect the trends I think it's fine, I started this back in March 2020 so I stuck with it. I'm on row 591 on my spreadsheet. Last time our 7 day average dropped over 3% was at the end of June. We've essentially been flat for 2 weeks but now it's going down, which you hope is the start of the other side of the curve.

  11. 'Generic' is the key. An monument like IwoJima is fundamentally anonymous, it to a type or class. I wouldn't class those with monuments clearly to individual people.

  12. If a ball breaks even 3 feet across 55 feet (which is a huge breaking ball) , it only breaks about 1" in the 18 inches across the plate. The ump may be fooled by the break but not by the amount it's breaking while it's over the plate.

  13. Goff is playing without the best two players on offense, both offensive lineman. Plus they are breaking a rookie at LT who is struggling. His top 2 receivers are also out and what is left at the WR group is waiver wire fodder. Plus it's a new offense for him and a new offensive coordinator for the entire team. He appears to be a QB who just can not function if he doesn't have pieces around him. Goff is probably a career back up from here on out but this is a horrible situation for any QB. My main criticism of the off season was that they didn't bring in enough at WR to give Goff someone to throw to so they could properly evaluate him. Although most of the FO came from the Rams so they should have known what they were getting. If they have already given up on him then acquiring him has to be considered a mistake, given that there were other offers out there that didn't include taking on a QB with 100 million left on his contract. Plus they passed on Fields and Jones at 7. When teams don't have a QB they get desperate and the Lions will turn over as many leaves as it takes this off season to find one. Punting the QB situation another year to wait for a better draft seems about as much of a long shot as acquiring Watson. Especially since they will certainly expect to improve and not be one of the worst 2-3 teams in the league again.

  14. When game broadcasts resume from commercial break, and you observe outfielders playing catch with each other as well as with infielders,... as seems pretty evident to me where the true delay of game originates . Pitch clocks will never fix that.

  16. I read Halberstam's book The Fifties which had a huge section on civil rights and the history of lynchings was sobering and terrifying. We did NOT learn that in school. We should and it should be taught today. Those who think otherwise have a guilty conscience.

  18. I am amused at how the Trump tax cuts that added trillions to the debt and are seen as virtuous while social spending on things like child care or health care or free community college are seen as extravagant. The time for lectures and pearl clutching from Republicans and conservatives about the debt is long passed... it just is. President Trump pissed away whatever remained of that credibility.

  19. Trump was telling people what they wanted to hear and he followed through on a good many of those things. Kasich is a moderate and an idiot. Rubio didn't have the right message and would have been another do nothing POTUS. A lot of Americans were looking for a President that would do something different and work for the American people. Trump came along at the right time with the right message. As much as everyone here doesn't like him he still did a lot while in office, far more than Biden has done in 47 years and will ever do. And he did big things...biggly if it makes you feel better. He cracked down on illegal immigration, stopped the flow of people from terror supporting countries that hate us, stood up to Iran and got us out of that horrible so called nuclear deal Obama got us in although he didn't get the cash back, He didn't get us in any new wars, tax cuts, economy was booming before covid and unemployment at an all time low, peace in the Mideast that nobody has been able to accomplish and a few other things. Now Biden and democrats are in charge and everything has gone back to crap. How is that progress? Its not and it obvious these democrats are not working for the American people. America needs another President with the ideas that Trump had but that person needs to have a better delivery, know how to talk to people and most importantly, know when to shut up.

  20. I just want the postseason to be over so the wheeling and dealing can begin. The postseason for me is an unwanted interruption of our Sherman‘s march to the sea.

  21. Anyone who can be that easily swayed from one extreme all the way to the other has either zero integrity of convictions, or have no real convictions at all. They haven't thought anything through, so they can be swayed way back to the other side just as easily. Basically, they're in it whatever the thrill of it is.

  22. I like the 2023 class better too, & I've been in that same camp of going D/WR early & often .. but watching Goff is killing me. I was a Goff fan - I thought he'd be "good enough" until we're contending, but he just has this deer in the headlights look about him.

  28. I've done that once....a minor league player (may or may not have been a service academy graduate) laid some shit bare when it came to treatment of soldiers in Iraq and the leadership they were receiving. It was all part of a discussion about why he left baseball to deploy to Iraq....I was factual, quoted him honestly, but also knew he had the potential to get in a bunch of trouble from the article. I asked him to review the article and give me his blessing because it was his ass on the line. He made one minor tweak to the article, actually making a two sentence sequence more critical of the situation and was adamant I publish the piece immediately.
