  5. A couple of things. In God We Trust didn't become the Official motto of the US until 1956 replacing E pluribus unum. It wasn't officially added to coins until 1955 when Pres Eisenhower signed legislation requiring the phrased be used on currency. It had been used sporadically since about 1864. Under God was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954 by presidential proclamation. While there may have some support during the founding period, the biggest push came in reaction to the cold war. Mostly by conservatives pushing back from New Deal policies.

  7. Lack of leaders was also an issue. Not a lack of parents telling us what we should be doing CV though.

  8. In fairness, if the Goff of the last few weeks is the Goff of the future, we should not have any issue riding him for next year and possibly beyond. I still see his ceiling as that of Alex Smith with KC. Serviceable and capable of not losing us games until we spot and move up to get our Mahomes.

  9. I think the issue is on the left is that it looks like a lobbyists influenced decision rather than a public health decision to shorten the quarantine period. Regardless of the truth of that it seems like they should be out there providing the rationale for the change forcefully. It doesn't look good when Delta asks you to shorten it period and then you shorten the period. If it's otherwise explained they should do so forcefully

  10. Probably the only position on the team that is set is offensive tackle and center.

  12. An inconsistent young player who might not even want to re-sign here, a young player who has had a good half season, a struggling young player who will be coming off of a serious injury and two undrafted free agents. Your definition of "set" is a whole lot different than mine. These guys are showing some promise but the Lions still need a lot of secondary help. Wide Receiver and Safety are arguably their two biggest needs with Linebacker being a contender for top need.

  13. If I'm trading out of a shot at one of the Big 3 spots (LT, QB, Edge) on the roster....I'm gonna want a LOT in return. If we were naturally sitting at 5...I'd have zero issue with Stingley or Hamilton. If I'm trading down...I better get a ridiculous haul.

  14. As frustrating as he can be for stretches at a time, I think we’ll be very happy with Javy overall. At his best he is as productive as any big leaguer, and he is a joy to watch playing ball.

  15. I'm very happy with Baez. I think his overall game will fit well with this team. Durability is important and Baez has been durable. I would have been happy with Correa as well, maybe not as happy five years from now when Correa has five years left and Baez has one. Someone will pay Correa what he wants. They will market him as a star player and make plenty of money compared to what his contract will cost. The difference between the two is payroll flexibility. The Tigers can potentially add another player.

  16. Baez's average annual salary is 23 million. I doubt Correa will make 46 million. He'll probably make between 30-35 million and he'll be worth it if he stays healthy. He'll get more years because he is younger. Ten years is a lot though. I am happy with Baez.

  21. One of the biggest mistakes this country has ever made. I worked with some very connected people who knew it was a mistake at the time. One of them said this is going to be the biggest drug epidemic we have ever seen. He was a non-stop talker and some thought he was just blowing off steam, but he was prescient.

  22. The Tigers got their catcher, shortstop and starting pitcher and didn't spend like a drunken sailor just as Avila promised. I don't expect any other major acquisitions, but there may be a couple of interesting pieces added.

  23. No, you don't have to be an atheist, but you should always argue as if it's an atheist that you have to persuade of the soundness of your reasoning.

  24. The topic of the article was whether ACB was going to follow the advice she was once happy to dispense to others that judges facing decisions where existing law and personal religious belief conflict should recuse. Barrett's topic at the time was the death penalty and here the writer (S. Sherry) re-framed the question wrt Abortion. However, the question of judges who profess fealty to higher standards of impartiality but then abandon them when facing the chance to advance their own political/religious agenda is certainly broader than just abortion. You can certainly criticize a Douglas for text as mushy as 'emanations of penumbras' but even mushy secular arguments are less dangerous to the republic than those whose real premises are religious.

  27. My father in law went really quickly this summer from a brain tumor. He was having issues with headaches and slurring his speech. They did a scan and detected a small growth. They set him up for further tests within the week. Within days he had difficulty walking to the point he was rushed to the ER. within 48 hours he was so far gone that he was transferred to a hospice unit where he died 2-3 days later.
