  1. The Red Wings are really the very best counter-argument. No-one, and I mean absolutely no-one believes the Red Wings org has even tried to tank. If anything they tried way too hard to hang on the dying embers of their previous run for too long. The Wings never suffered any lack of intention, they simple suffered too much of a guy that once knew how to win but apparently forgot in the form of one Kenny Holland. So now ownership has corrected that mistake and the result is that the lottery has totally hammered a team that wants nothing more than to get better.

  5. I wear a mask as additional protection for myself, for sure, but I’m also wearing it in case I am currently a carrier but don’t know that I am, and have dealings with people who are more at risk either because of their age or medical condition. I can’t be the only person thinking like this, can I?

  6. I appreciate your honesty and vulnerability on that but you just have to know that you're being judged as hard as this guy gets judged:

  7. they didn't say it might not fall on you. Just remember before you jump on the China can't do anything right bus that if you emptied your house of all the things you bought from them you'd be living a very different life. There is plenty to knock the Chinese for, but for better or worse, we are now locked into an economic symbiosis with them. To the degree we have allowed China to make our lifestyle possible, we are complicit in how they have accomplished that.

  8. At this point, I'm kind of done with Harbaugh and I wanted Josh to get it. Harbaugh is a cartoon, man. I'm glad, in year freaking SEVEN, that he finally beat OSU and got to Indy. It was a very impressive season, but the sideshow is silly and I think it's just time to cut ties with Bo, his disciples and that whole sick, sordid chapter. The announcers are gone, lets keep going. The faster we get done with the past, the better the future will be. Bo knew. He bragged that he knew everything about his program..........can't back off of this and say "well, not that part". Take down the statue, rename it Victors Hall and move on. Hockey program is f'ed up now too.

  9. And, to the extent that policies on masks have anything to do with politics, when the majority nationally *wants* them to end. I understand Buddha's perspective here, and the science with this new variant as to the efficacy of masking seems to suggest that they are less effective against Omicron, but again, when things like requiring masks in school go from being a "55%" issue to a "30%" issue, maybe you will see more movement. As it exists, we aren't there yet. Maybe if Omicron continues to fade, the ground will shift.

  10. If everybody wants to win, why do we have threads where everyone roots for the Tigers to finish last? If the fans want to finish last, perhaps the front office secretly wants the same.

  11. They are dumb, they are an irrational response to a mythical problem. Baseball has enough real issues without wasting time on this crap.

  12. Yes, getting one of the top 8 picks for five years in a row should make a team get better. You are assuming that the Tigers will get unlucky in the lottery. Did you ever think that they might finish with the eighth worst record and then WIN the lottery? Detroit sports fans are great (at least the Tigers fans are!), but they are very pessimistic.

  13. you need to read more press reporting from China. Xi's whole approach to Covid is to try to portray the Chinese model as a more efficient/effective form of gov and he has decided a good way to do that is to try to prove China can do a better job agains COVID and that means yes - the Chinese are trying harder to get a lower death toll. Of course it makes a virtue of the tools of repression, but that's the point for Xi. When you look beyond the borders of the US you should always park your Manicheanism at the door. The real world is not a black and white place.

  14. If you are from Detroit you have the example that despite the efforts of the league that has done more than any other in history to insure parity - the NFL, a team can still be consistently bad for a long time. There is no cure for incompetent ownership. In the end, it's not of much value to say an owner 'wants to win' if he/she is clueless about how to.

  15. The idea that teams have to completely tear down in order to get good again is also absurd. There are many different avenues to success.

  16. CMRIV, so weird. I posted mine while you were posting yours and my "confused" statement was independent of Slava's tweet. Dovetails. There are many confused. People who don't have the courage to tell the bartender to turn off Foxnews at 11am on drinking day.

  17. I would just add that, in terms of Virginia, I saw a map of the counties who were ignoring the Governors order on Twitter... and it wasn't just blue ones. Again, I don't think that would be happening if this issue were just "shirts and skins" at this point. Even though it's often how it gets portrayed

  18. 1. I think tanking is more acceptable to ownership when they can have a much lower payroll. Forced to pay they might actually put a respectable team on the field. 2. Well so be it. If the management is poor nothing will ever help them. Maybe hire some talent instead. Yes I do or at least its worth to incentivize teams to try because some teams are not trying to be competitive. Just the opposite. 3. Or rewards teams that actually are trying to win. They still have the main draft to help weaker teams. There are only 30 teams in a world full of Billionaires. If you don't want to compete year in and year out just sell your damn team to someone who will. Tanking is purposeful suck and it's a disgrace and insult to the fans and game of baseball. It's not rebuilding its sucking.

  19. Exactly right. I checked in 20 minutes before the game last night and tonight to see if I was going to watch. I have caught a few minutes and it is amazing how atrocious our offense looks without Cade. He is somewhat a saving grace for Casey because he is such a willing and creative passer but Casey really needs to go. It is 5 guys standing around watching each other go one on one. It's depressing that this is the coaching we are getting from Casey.

  22. The Tigers still have a fairly shallow system, with very little below the top few guys. I’m hoping that the hires they have made can deepen the system substantially and give us both contributing regulars to our roster and good depth to deal from so we can fill immediate holes. I would bet Hinch has a lot more informal responsibility for the organization’s success than the chart stipulates. I wouldn’t doubt her set that as a condition for accepting the job.

  25. The extortionate pricing may be in part why, during my days as a media client, many of the vendors who invited us to suite games laid out only boiled hot dogs, one-ounce bags of Lays, and Miller Lite. I remember Diamandis (Car and Driver, Road & Track) use to spring for really nice spreads with dogs, brats, sliders, chicken tenders, several brands of beer, even liquor. But no matter what, every suite experience culminates in the dessert cart. Mmmmm …
