Watching Albert Pujols going out in a blaze of glory with a first place team is really depressing. I wish Miggy could have had something like that, but the fact that they are talking about him returning is just silly. This guy's beyond done. He got his milestones and I'm happy for that, but it's just pathetic. It's obvious he just can't do it anymore. No reason for him to come back this season and they should pay him his salary for next year, retire his jersey and throw him a big party on or near their April 18th game next year (his 40th Birthday). It almost feels cruel at this point.3 points

Stafford proved the haters wrong so I'm over the grieving process. It's time to focus on the Lions. More Rams loses are better for the Lions.2 points

Reese Olson went 5IP 2R(both unearned) and 6Ks today. After struggling for most of the summer this is now his 4th start out of the last 5 where he has given up 2 runs or less and in that time he has a 39 to 6 K:BB ratio so it's good to see him finishing the year strong.2 points

I think this is incorrect. This war is 100% about Putin's historical grievance. The Soviet Union lost its global standing/ prestige/ power/ influence when it fell apart. He wants it back. That's it. Domestic standing is just a side effect.1 point

Speaking of Pujols here's a fun fact, he currently has an OPS+ of 139, if that stands for the rest of the year that would be the LOWEST he ever put up in a Cardinal uniform yet would be higher than any number he put up in his 10 years in LA.1 point

Devastating penalty for Max. Instead of leading in turn 1 he will have to wait until turn 9.1 point

It's that name, Andre Lipcius, that is holding him back. It's a good name for a guy who hopes that some day the Paris runway models will be wearing his designs. Maybe now that Avila is gone we can get back to drafting guys named Mike and Bart and Chuck.1 point

I'm sick and tired of activism from the formerly baseball analytics types. Also, I didn't realize McLeod was a POC. For somebody who is quick to jump down people's throats for logical fallacies, people like Law saying "Oh, they signed a white guy, it must be because they are white" is pretty fucking rich.1 point

I sort of get why the UK cares but no idea why the rest of the world still does. They are currently a topic in 3 different threads here at the moment. They are like a less talented version of the Kardashians.1 point

It bears remembering that like every other federally-protected big league franchise, the Tigers are making money hand-over-fist in terms of direct and indirect income, national revenue sharing, and especially franchise valuation. So, from a strictly business standpoint, as long as they’re making good money and the franchise value is going up, there’s no incentive to spend on capital improvements such as expanding the analytics department, deepening coaching and training staffs and equipment, or spending on even effective free agents in order to win games now (as if any decent free agent would choose the Tigers over any number of contenders anyway). The Tigers will make money and increase in value even if they continue to field 100-loss teams year after year. The only reason an owner would direct the organization to invest heavily, despite the lack of business imperative, is if they have a burning personal desire to put a consistent winning team on the field.1 point

I wanted to share this because I thought it was cool and would be a nice piece of nostalgia for all The Bad Boys fans. I grew up reading The Franchise by Cameron Stauth which is an insider's look at Chuck Daly and the Pistons' first title in '88-'89 as seen through the eyes of GM Jack McCloskey. It follows them from training camp up in Ontario all the way to the parade in Motown and the brutal news that Rick Mahorn was going to Minnesota as part of the expansion draft. The stories in this book are second to none: Zeke's relationship with McCloskey, his lifelong friendship with Mark Aguirre, "The Trade" that brought the missing piece, Aguirre, to Motown for Adrian Dantley, the Jordan Bulls and the end of the Doug Collins era, Red Auerbach and his hatred for the Pistons. Anyway, I'm 38 now and I listen to more audiobooks than actually read physical copies and I was excited to see that this had been made into an Audible audiobook back in May. I'm currently about halfway through the listen and am enjoying it all over again: https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Franchise-Audiobook/B0B1VQD5KH Hope you enjoy it as much as I have! Bad Boys, Bad Boys!!1 point

On top of Foles, Garrapolo went to a SB once and damn near did it again last year and I would say he is middle of the pack at best, Alex Smith/Kaep went to a SB, then there was of course Goff with the Rams, Flacco won a SB, Eli won twice including one of the years where he led the league in INTs and posted a highly mediocre 52 QBR. So there's been quite a few outliers the past 15 or so years and the narrative that you NEED elite QB play to get to the SB is false. It certainly helps but it's not mandatory like needing Superstars in the NBA to win in today's game.1 point

If we are looking for a guy who is going to come in and break things, remake the entire front office, and implement a system that's roughly 180 degrees opposite from the scout-centric, analytics-phobic approach they were doing before, I have my doubts that we're going to get that from Mike Slater, again, based just on the topline info we all have available to us. I'm not saying Slater would be exactly like Al, but by the same token, I'm also not engaging in the magical thinking that because he's following Al, he will necessarily turn everything upside down and rebuild it all from scratch as an analytics-forward organization competitive on that front with the best in the game. Nothing I have seen in his background, or in that video for that matter, suggests that's much of a possibility. I'm eager to see any evidence to the contrary. That all said, there could also be a certain comfort level Chris Ilitch would feel by hiring a guy who works much the same way as the guy he was publicly pressured to let go, due to the unfortunate circumstance that his moves happened to just not work and he eventually needed to pay the price. Ilitch doesn't seem like the kind of person who will obliterate something that's working poorly and then rebuild it from the ground up into a completely different structure. In that sense, he strikes me as a business conservative. If that's true, that might make Mike Slater one of the early front-runners for the chair as of today.1 point
