  4. but this goes back to the ball argument. Yes the shift can be beaten, but as long as your HR/FB ratio is high enough, you are still better off trying to pull the ball into the seats instead of taking fhe improved odds on one base. The good hitters don't hit into the shift because they are stupid, they do it because that is what the stat nerds in the FO are telling them to do and because OPS is what gets them paid and pulling the ball is how to get the total bases that drive their OPS.

  5. Also it's a question of people's expectations going in - one person in the comments section of Cody's article said that while they didn't expect Correa, they expected them to be in on Cody Bellinger, Michael Brantley, Andrew Benintendi, etc. Despite the fact that Harris has continually stated that the need in the OF is for someone who bats right handed. Or JD Martinez who only makes sense in a world where Miguel Cabrera is put out to pasture. The Tigers need bats, but the need doesn't mean they should be taking a scattershot approach and just signing anyone and everyone on the market - they still need to be discerning within those needs, focusing not just on production but who also makes sense based on platoon splits and the like. The other part is that, again, the offseason isn't over yet. People hate hearing it, but there is still time left and it's hard to prejudge without knowing what it will look like when the cake comes out of the oven.

  9. Major League is on. Maybe the 2023 Tigers are the 35 year remake of that and AJ Hinch can lead them to victory, as soon as he's done talking to that fella about a set of whitewalls.

  15. No way will it be Jefferies, it'll be a consensus GOP Speaker. What can Dems get? Assignments? yes. Jan 6 continues? no. Ethics committee review of subpoena-refuseniks (McCarthy, Jordan, etc...) YES!!! (but highly unlikely). Shutting out the Fascist Caucus because of a consensus Speaker when it comes to raising the debt limit...? Yes. Plus other stuff if they're smart negotiators...

  16. I posted up thread last that one Dem spokesRep said the Dem opening position is no games on debt service or budget passage and no investigative fishing expeditions. Those are not low value gains for the Biden admin and so the Dems in general.

  19. there has been all sorts of rule change talk. putting a "3 second rule" for the corner so you cant have a shooter camped out there. decreasing the size of the lane to get teams to emphasize the big man again. allow hand checking and more physical defense.

  20. free them up to hand check again and i bet that number goes down. on the one hand, 71 points for donovan mitchell and every other scorer seemingly getting 50 per night is ridoculous. otoh, nobody wants to go back to the 90s and early 00s of 70 point games.

  21. I'm fine with the org not putting lipstick on a pig. We don't need a press conference with Fernando Vina and Jason Johnson circa 2004 telling us things will get better. Those are the types of things available to him at this point so why bother? Last year they did the big splash with Baez and now everyone wants him gone. Do fans learn nothing?

  22. I’m unhappy with the offseason, but the truth is we have few tradable assets and ran into an unfriendly free agency cycle, with teams willing to spend ridiculous money. Hard to compete with a winning team and/or more desirable location. We really don’t know how aggressive we tried to be in free agency, given that Harris seems to keep things close. I’d be surprised to learn that Harris and Co were not being aggressive or innovative, but are instead victims of the current circumstances. It sucks, but I’ll keep my pitchfork in the shed.

  23. how could Harris look at this historically bad offense and decide to add nobody, but Ibanez, Nevin and Feliciano (all of whom may lose their 40-man spot in February or tomorrow) and Malloy in the minors? there is nothing to assess with Miggy and Schoop - they are irrelevant to 2024. there is nothing to assess with Clemens and Short - they are garbage. there are literally thousands (!) of plate appearances available for Rogers, Haase, Tork, Kreidler, Lipcuis, Perez, Greene, Baddoo, Carpenter, Meadows and Malloy - half of whom are going to spend months at Toledo anyhow. Acquiring 2 decent position players would not change that. I'll say again - and I guess for the last time - if Avila singed Boyd, Lorenzen, released some detritus, and made yet another Rule 5 pick and said, we are good to go, the pitchforks and torches would be out en masse, and rightly so.

  24. I agree that it would not even be in the realm of possibilities that Michigan talks to Urban. That said, if I were Warde Manuel I would absolutely extend the invitation to Urban Meyer to interview to replace Harbaugh. In spite of all of his problems, of which there are many, he does what you expect of him most, win. Is Urban a jackass? Yes, of course. Does he treat his players and coaches like shit? It seems that way. Does he have a history of "getting sick" and/or leaving programs in a lurch. Yes, he's done that multiple times now. Should he be lap dancing with young women at the bar? No way. But does he win at the collegiate level everywhere he goes? You bet he does. As you said, if all you care about is winning then you'll hire Urban Meyer. I think Michigan cares more about that and sees themselves as above hiring or even interviewing a guy like Urban and thus they won't do it. That's a shame, because winning is very important and Urban sure does win a lot.

  30. John Bacon is a rare source I trust on Harbaugh. From the point he was hired (which most whiffed on) he has been cautious, but usually correct. I don’t think Michigan would be in a bad spot if he left. I could see them promoting internally with a Mike Hart, Sherrone Moore, or Matt Weiss, and continuing to roll next year.
