  1. I was on vacation, but I've definitely got some thoughts on this whole thing... Bey: I'm fine with the Pistons moving him. I've been getting more and more frustrated with his play lately as many of you have seen me comment. Selfish, inefficient, a shooter who can't shoot, a wing who can't defend, and his numbers have regressed every year. As a rookie we all thought he'd be a 3 and D role player that would develop into a Jae Crowder or (hopefully) Middleton type. Turns out he wanted to be way more than that to the detriment of all those around him. Something I like to call "Drummond Disease" or "DD" for short, but better know as a lack of self awareness. I said previously that this team was going to need to move players to make space for draft picks and free agents that will help them compete because player development alone wasn't going to cut it. Cade/Ivey/Duren are where we're investing our future, and that only leaves the wing where they can make improvements. So, this was inevitable. Wiseman: I'm curious to see Wiseman in a pick and roll system. He has a lot of tools, but he's played less minutes than Duren so far in his career, 1/3rd of the minutes that Killian has played, and is just 21 (to Saddiq's 23). There's still room for growth and he should get plenty of opportunity here. I also don't agree with those saying we don't need a Center. Noel obviously isn't getting played and may be bought out. Bagley is (always) hurt. So, all you have is Stew backing up Duren. Have you been watching the Stew at Center travesty this season? He's too small on defense and has bad hands in the paint on offense. Your only hope is that he figures that 3 point shot out and can become a bench PF and situational Center like Grant Williams. That Cleveland game was probably the straw that broke the camel's back for Weaver, and I can't blame him for that - we looked like a middle school team playing against a college team. We absolutely need a backup Center and if they can get that out of Wiseman, then I'm happy with the return. At the end of the day, you're swapping a bench Wing for a bench Center. Let's not inflate the value of a wing who can't play defense or shoot and couldn't keep his starting spot on one of the worst teams in the league. All I need Wiseman to become is a good bench Center and he'll have more value - or at least less negative value - than Bey at the wing. Weaver: However, I do agree that Weaver's seat is getting much warmer with the fans. The vision and identity of the team he's building is questionable at best. I think fans are ok with being bad during a rebuild, but we're all struggling to see what he's building towards. He says he wants defense but he's collected a team full of bad defenders. This is going to be a big offseason for him, especially if he doesn't get bailed out by landing the #1 or #2 pick. And nobody wants to see him spend that 50M+ on the equivalent of Charlie V, Ben Gordon, or Josh Smith in this bad free agent market. It's definitely going to be interesting.

  3. So in summary. Tigers seem likely to miss out on a 50M check in the coming weeks. I could see MLB floating them some money, but not sure what the league's emrrgency reserves are like, especially three years after COVID. The games should be telecast. This year on BSD while all the litigation is going down. I bet MLB.TV stays blacked out locally. Maybe a forced sale to AT&T or Comcast means the station becomes NBC Sports Detroit or AT&T Sports Detroit. Again, as the Fangraphs article pointed out, the RSN's would still be profitable if it wasn't for the massive debt taken on to make the purchase. And this is tangential, but for something that was intended to be a consumer protection, DOJ making Disney sell the FSN's ended up being very anticonsumer.

  6. I've been having these conversations at work that go "What is Detroit style?" and I'm like "well, i had never had that until i was an adult and its really good but its not actually what I grew up with." Basically, foodies are gonna foodie. The idea that there is a thing that is Detroit style and people outside the area like it is almost enough for me to be proud of. I grew up on NY style slices from places like Primos and Lorenzos (no longer around) that would burn your mouth from the spicy sauce and toppings. These pizzas would be thrown by my parents to my siblings and I like a gazelle carcass thrown to a pack of lion cubs or a cow stumbling into the Amazon and being shredded by piranhas and it would disappear in seconds. According to my NJ-born colleague at work who had experience making pies, an acceptable NY pizza slice must be able to fold at the sides at the crust and the tip (i.e., the part from center of the pie) must not bend down. That standard is not met by a lot of places who don't actually give a bleep.

  7. Well said. I think if they highlighted the view during the broadcast where you could see the blatant jersey grab this whole thing wouldn't have gotten as big as it did but for some reason all the announcers and replays kept highlighting was the soft contact AFTER the jersey grab so viewers were thinking that was why it was a penalty. I believe the only time the jersey grab was brought up during the game was when Peirera mentioned it but the guys in the truck still refused to go cut to that replay even after he said it

  8. I prefer the other view. The officials shouldn't just let the team that abuses the rules (and or the other team!) the most, win. Just because the stakes are higher doesn't mean the rules should be bent more or because one team is willing to bet the officials won't call them for illegal play because it's late in a big game. If anything you have two teams that are supposed to represent the epitome of performance - they should be able to at least meet the same standard of play that they did in the regular season. This wasn't really a controversial call, The DB directly held back the receiver on the way to where he wanted to go. That is going to be called every time it's seen. Granted it's not always seen, but that's a different question.

  13. The Guardian covered it, but mostly from the angle of Bakken crude moving through the same corridors. Also CBS. Pittsburg Papers been working it. Unfortunately, in given the way local news capability has collapsed in the US, we probably can't get much national attention to an event with no immediate casualties or obvious political fallout.

  14. I'll let Holmes manage that balancing act. It's a tough one and I do not disagree that he both needs to build talent on the defensive side as well as not ignore opportunities to add significant talent on the O side... I think I've said before that if he drafts Bijan I'll get behind whatever moves he makes. I mean, I have personal preferences, and believe a 2nd/ 3rd round RB will suffice for this team... and I do want him to concentrate on adding a lot of defensive talent in the draft and FA this year.... But, yeah, again, if he drafts Bijan or anyone else on O it's "Trust in Holmes". So in theory I don't disagree with ya'... although I may have different ideas of which players I'd like Holmes to target. 😉

  16. It’s not at all true that teams don’t care about ad dollars and ad eyeballs that RSNs get for their games. It is true they don’t make any immediate additional revenue if the RSN overachieves on ratings estimates and can start charging higher rates for sponsorships and spots—that benefit all accrues to the RSN. But overachieving on ratings estimates, getting more eyeballs than anticipated, does serve to help the team negotiate a sweeter rights deal when it’s time for renewal. More eyeballs also means more interest for the team, which they benefit from in terms of a boost in attendance, more concessions sold, more merchandising sold, etc., which gooses non-broadcast revenue and could provide additional funds for better players, coaching, infrastructure, et al, as well as the halo effect it provides to the owner’s other business interests as the proprietor of a popular, high-profile major sports franchise. High fan interest driven through high broadcast ratings has a strong effect on all of this. Teams definitely root for high ratings for their broadcasts on RSNs.

  17. I maintain three Twitter accounts: one for SABR baseball stuff, one to follow news, and one to follow entertainment and media and pop culture stuff. I like to keep the three silos of information separated and distinct. All three of them had Musk’s tweet about people believing the press in the For You. I had never interacted with him, his tweets, or anyone who ever retweeted him, not even once, not even the news account. Yet the tweet just showed up. That’s a little bit of a problem, I think.

  18. I think if it's reasoanble to assume the action prevented the receiver from getting to where the ball was supposed to be thrown it's a good call, and holding a jersey does absolutely slow you down, so I don't have a problem with that call, but if this game did demonstrate anything about NFL rules, it's that there is no logical way to explain what is or isn't a catch.

  20. Bradberry admitted in his presser that he held his jersey but hoped he'd get away with it. Normally I'm in the mindset of "let them play" in close situations and if the penalty didn't effect the outcome of the play I'd still agree with that mindset but in this instance that wasn't the case. That jersey pull did impact the play, that slowed the receiver up just enough for the ball to be overthrown.

  22. I mentioned it before but St Brown in a weird way is like the Lions TE. He works the middle of the field and is also an excellent blocker for a receiver. I would say Kelce has the advantage in the end zone due to his size.

  28. Another thing about Harris and what he did this offseason is that he his talent acquisition options were severely limited by the mess he inherited. Any free agent who had options was never going to choose to come here this winter, and Harris had very little in terms of talent to deal from on the trade front. So really, his main two acquisition options at this moment are waiver churn and minor league free agent deals, and given that it’s hard to put together a shiny offseason that you can show off. But we’re in the baby steps stage, so patience.

  31. I guess Weaver has been enamored with Wiseman for awhile, saw some reports saying that he tried to move up to get him in the 2020 draft. I'm guessing he gets consistent playing time the rest of the year and if he proves himself or shows a glimmer of his upside we'll make some corresponding moves in the offseason to free up more time for him in the coming years. All in all I don't hate the trade, it sounds like Bey wasn't gonna be in our long term plans and we likely weren't going to get a young player with any more upside than Wiseman for him. No matter who we got there were going to be some flaws with him. So to me this is just a meh trade, nothing I love but nothing I'm going to lose sleep over either.
