  1. BA updated it's top 100, Keith at 21, Clark 22 and Jobe at 69. I don't think Jobe was ranked preseason so they must be buying the stuff he has shown post injury.

  2. as a Tiger fan, the extra irritation about Lolich and Freehan is the inconsistency. They say Freehan didn't play long enough even though he was the undisputed best at his position for mulitple years, then they turn around and say that even though Lolich finished his career as the all time leader in K's for a LH pitcher, it was only because he threw so many innings and played so long, he was never dominant enough. You can't have it both ways, at least one of them should be in the hall under any theory of HOFness.

  9. Don't want to go on a side bar about Bonds and the legitimacy of his records but one thing that I think doesn't get talked about enough about his numbers skyrocketing late in his career is him introducing the armored elbow pad. Once he switched to armored one he started crowding the plate more which in turn allowed him to choke up on the bat even more giving him even more control over it along with just being able to cover more of the strike zone. Of course that isn't the sole reason for his insane numbers, there also was rapid expansion, PEDs and most importantly God given talent but I do think it helped him more than people realize or talk about.

  10. Baez is interesting. Zero value as is, but would you be in favor of the Tigers attaching a prospect (i.e., anyone not named Colt Keith or Max Clark) in order to entice a team to pick up the balance of his contract? I would. I could live with Zach Short for the balance of the season, and let Harris and team identify a mid-long term solution during the offseason.

  13. Did Freehan suffer because when he was winding down his career and becoming HOF eligible you had Johnny Bench, Carlton Fisk, and Gary Carter setting new standards for catchers?

  14. Matt Kinzer Matt Kinzer pitched 1 2/3 innings on May 26, 1990 in a 10-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Acquired in an offseason trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, Kinzer was assigned to AAA Toledo in Spring Training 1990. He was recalled from the Mud Hens on May 25, making his season debut the next day. Entering the game in the 8th inning with one out and White Sox shortstop Ozzie Guillen on first, he surrendered a walk, a double, and two singles leading to four Chicago runs before finally getting out of the inning. He returned to pitch the top of the 9th, this time issuing only a leadoff walk to White Sox catcher Ron Karkovice before retiring Craig Grebeck, Lance Johnson, and Robin Ventura. Two days later, he returned to Toldeo, never to be seen on a major league mound again. Of note, however (as mentioned by RedRamage), Kinzer is, to date, the only person to have appeared in a game for both the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Lions. On October 11, 1987, Kinzer served as a replacement player as much of the NFL was on strike. Having been the punter during his time at Purdue University, he punted seven times for 238 yards as the (mainly) replacement Lions beat the (mainly) replacement Packers in overtime by a score of 19-16. Once the NFL players and owners reached an agreement later that week, Kinzer's NFL career came to an end.

  17. I think he was blackballed because he was critical of the Tigers organization. On another note...On two occasions, Fenech took my blog post and used it as his entire Free Press article. He gave me full credit, so I loved it but it was strange that he did that.

  18. Lou and Tram shoulda gone in together. Longest DP combo in MLB history and that record prolly won't ever be broken. And Lou's numbers are as good as, or better, than many other 2nd basemen. IMO, which doesn't count, he should have already been in.

  20. Yeah Whitmore has looked really good but even if he carries it over to the regular season I think it is going to take time before people can question the teams for passing on him since the concerns they reportedly had aren't something that necessarily are going to show up right away. Like the vague medical reports about his knees, teams may have seen something there that made them of the belief that either an injury is coming soon or more likely to happen at some time in the future. Same with his alleged motivational issues teams felt he had during workouts. That could be something that shows up later in time.

  21. Slotkin was recruited by the CIA, something she was eager to do after the 9/11 attacks, and worked as an Analyst in Iraq because she was fluent in Arabic. Calling her a "supporter of the Bush Administration's unlawful and immoral war" simply because she served there during that time is more than a bit absurd.

  26. Agreed about the peers part, also it's all in your mindset but to me I always put more emphasis on peak vs. longevity. I often go back to Johan Santana, he was off the ballot after his first year where as personally I would've strongly considered voting him in, certainly shouldve gotten more support than he did. My reasoning is that for a 7 year stretch he was probably considered a top 3 pitcher in baseball and for a few of those years he was seen as the very best. In my eyes if you are viewed as the very best pitcher on the planet for that amount of time you should at the very least be right on the cusp of the Hall of Fame especially since his career was cut short due to injury, it's not like he was elite for 7 years then was complete trash for a decade.

  31. It's a false premise anyway. It's experiencing and overcoming *shared* meaningful adversity that creates corps bonding. You don't get it from abuse manufactured and applied from within by other members inside the group.

  32. Freehan was before my time but looking over his resume I really don't get why he didn't make the Hall. I mean he was an All Star for 10 straight seasons so I imagine he was always looked at as one of the 2 or 3 best at his position for over decade right? You would think that would've been enough to get him but since this all happened before I was born I have no idea how he was viewed by the National media or what they really paid attention to when they were voting on the HOF. Lou on the other hand I can kinda understand cause while certainly deserving the things he excelled at weren't really appreciated as much when he was up for the Hall, like if he retired 10 years later I think it's almost certain he would've gotten in.

  33. This isn't necessarily about the incident here but in regards to hazing in general I never really understood it and it certainly has no place in this day and age. Some relatively "good natured" rookie hazing I'm not totally against like for instance I remember going to a Tigers game and one of the teams had the rookies carry out some of the equipment in pink Barbie(or some girl based toy like that) themed backpacks to the bullpen but the harsh and vile things that you hear about still should be outlawed and any coach that oversees that and lets it go on needs to be reprimanded or fired.

  34. Get familiar with using ChatGPT, or whatever other AI app you're signed up for, to craft emails or follow-ups for you in thorny situations. Our HVAC provider had us on overlapping contracts for a couple of months and I had asked for a refund, crafting the original email myself. After some back and forth I got him to acknowledge the problem and he did agree to the refund. That was June 11. I'd heard nothing by June 28, so I wrote a short two-sentence "please advise" follow-up email. Still nothing. I was thinking of calling the guy today and expecting to maybe experience pushback, because this would be the third contact about this issue, so I was wondering what exactly should I say to minimize that? As that task was lingering in the background I was perusing some newsletters and I was reading a story about openAI when, 💡: Why not have AI craft the follow-up email for me? So I asked it to do this: Write me an email in first person plural to someone who promised me a refund after overlapping two contracts with me but has not paid me yet even after telling me by email that he would, and not replying to a follow-up email asking about it. This is what it came up with: Dear [Recipient's Name], I hope this email finds you well. I am reaching out regarding the refund that we discussed and that you kindly agreed to provide. We had a conversation over the phone recently, during which you acknowledged the overlapping contracts and assured me that the refund would be processed promptly. However, it has been some time since our conversation, and I have not received the refund as promised. I also sent a follow-up email, but unfortunately, I have not received a response from you. I understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise, causing delays, but I kindly request your attention to this matter as it is important to me. I believe in maintaining clear and honest communication. Our prior agreement and your commitment to issuing the refund have not been fulfilled, leaving me in a position of financial inconvenience. I kindly request that you take immediate action to rectify this situation by processing the refund as soon as possible. To ensure a smooth resolution, I kindly ask you to provide me with an update regarding the refund status within [give a reasonable timeframe, e.g., three business days] from the receipt of this email. If there are any unforeseen circumstances that are causing the delay, please provide an explanation so that I can have a clear understanding of the situation. I value our business relationship and believe that this issue can be resolved amicably. I appreciate your prompt attention and cooperation in resolving this matter. Should you require any additional information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Thank you for your understanding and assistance. Sincerely, [Your Name] [Your Contact Information] It's rather long and detailed and strikes me as almost patronizingly over-polite, but I thought, what the heck? Not much to lose here if this approach goes upside-down. I inserted specifics in place of the bracketed parts and sent it along. I got a call back from him within ten minutes. Uh-oh, I thought, what if he's ticked off by my persistence and is loaded for bear? I may be the customer, but I'm not in the mood for that kind of drama. But, oh well, here goes ... He starts off in a slightly agitated tone, but he wasn't agitated at me. He was agitated because, he said, he'd put this refund in through his system twice and still I'd gotten nothing, so he "ripped" his business manager "a new one" because this whole thing is making him and the company look bad, and I should be hearing back from the business manager by email first thing this morning and status and timeframe. Well! That worked out pretty well! Thank you, our future AI overlords!

  39. People did make that comparison before the draft but it doesn't fit IMO. Simmons won't shoot, not even layups. Givony wrote an article about Simmons before his draft about not working hard. All reports about Ausar are about how hard he works. I don't think Simmons wants to play basketball.
