This. The trade wasn't saying Paredes had no future and so don't keep him. Rather it was: "We value this guy more than that guy." The mental health issues that Meadows is dealing with right now make it really hard to make it "fair" comparison because it looks like we just dumped a guy and got nothing (so far) in return... which is exactly what's happened. But that's asking people to predict a mental health issue that I don't think is in anyway predictable.3 points

To me, the "buy" or "sell" discussion hinges on playoff odds. Loitering in the 2% range isn't enough to push in chips, but if you are trading an anonymous lower level pitching prospect for a veteran rental, is that really going to set back your rebuild? There's also the "Reconfigure for 2024" trades where you buy low on a guy or two who could contribute next year. Finally, 40 man roster considerations are abound at the deadline as teams start to look at potential crunches this offseason. The Tigers are in a spot where they can add, and might be able to get a rule 5 eligible guy or two from a team facing a crunch. A simulation exercise I did last week suggests the Tigers have plenty of room to spare.3 points

Relievers are controlled until they are no longer effective, which almost always predates six years of service time.2 points

Harvy benched...good, that 9th inning IDGAF plate apperance last night should have been the last straw...how about a nice 2 week stint on the DL with "shoulder tightness"? He needs time to get his head out of his unmitigated ass.2 points

Daniel Fields Daniel Fields played left field for the Tigers on June 4, 2015 in a 7-5 loss to the Oakland Athletics. Fields was added to the active roster on June 2 to temporarily take the place of Rajai Davis, out on paternity leave. After not starting any of the three games he spent with the Tigers, he was inserted in left field in the third inning on June 4 after starter Yoenis Cespedes reported dizziness and flu-like symptoms. Fields struck out in his first two at bats AND committed an error when a Billy Butler line drive rolled under his glove, but doubled off of Oakland reliever Dan Otero in the 9th inning, eventually scoring on a Tyler Collins home run. Sent back to Toledo as Davis returned after the game, he became the first player since 1949 to hit a double in his only major league game. Fields retired from professional baseball in 2022 while playing for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League. His father, Bruce Fields, played for the Tigers in 1986 and served as their hitting coach from 2003-2006.2 points

I mostly agree with you and winning it all in 2006 or 2013 would have capped truly championship-calibre seasons. 2012 didn’t have quite the same feel but I was still into it. This year would be undeserved but I’d still take it without apology because I have this nagging unfinished business from 2006-2014 plus I want to scratch that 39 year itch. Hell, I’d even use the injustice of not having home field advantage in 1987 to rationalize feeling good about winning ugly this year.2 points

unfortunately they don't have another SS in the system that woudn't do worse, unless lightning strikes Kreidler and turns him into a hitter. Avila probably brought in an average of a least 4 SS hopefulls per year (at least until 2021!) between trades, the draft and international and the sum total we have to show is Wenceel still in AA and playing mostly 2B, and a very maybe guy in A ball. Ironic - if they had just held on to Iggy they would be net ahead over the last 5 yrs, we would not have suffered through Niko and we wouldn't have Baez's contract. Thanks McCann (and probably Gardenhire). The worst moves by GMs are often dumping players they don't like wihout obtaining a replacement they won't like even less. (Yeah, I know, Jeimer says, "Hi").2 points

I'll never grow tired of all the losing. Just waiting patiently for the big one the puts the Trump Crime Family away for good.1 point

It will be really depressing if Cunningham, Duren, Ivey and Thompson are not a core that a reasonably competent GM can build a more than 30 win team around.1 point

The Jobe selection rightly gets some heat, but the 2021 draft looks pretty good right now. All 21 are still in the organization. Some lower round guys are performing. I just wanted to point this out.1 point

The frustrating thing about Tork is the inconsistency. That 9th inning K yesterday is the perfect example...that was a good AB...he worked the count and got the pitcher to throw him middle/middle low 90's FB...a pitch he's supposed to kill...and he was late on it. That's frustrating. Javy going up there as the $25 million man as the potential tying run and waving at pitches a HS player would take...that's not frustrating...it's infuriating.1 point

I posted a comment in the wrong forum. Regular posters here do that occasionally. Hope that clears up the confusion for you.1 point

It would be a really weak division title and even if they somehow managed to win the World Series, that's not the way I want it to happen. When they win it all some day, I want it to be with a great memorable team.1 point

Might need to have a goalie pitch to test this theory out. Don't roll your eyes at me. It ain't the dumbest idea. They're shooting pucks in the dugout this season.1 point

Someone did a study of hockey goalies who were hot and cold and determined that inconsistency was preferable to consistency in the team's win total. Tango theorized that the same was true of pitchers. You figure a team is going to win most of the starts when a starting pitcher gives up 0 or 1 run, but giving up an average number of runs every game is not going to be as good especially if the team can't hit. Tango explained it as the difference between 1 run and 4 runs is bigger than the difference between 4 runs and 7 runs. You are going to lose most of the 4-7 run games, but your chances of winning goes up a lot when you go from 4 runs to 1 run. So, you want to get as many of those really low run games as you can even if you have games where you get pounded.1 point

Eh shutouts count the same as a 8-7 L. Obviously having the offense show up would be ideal but Olson looked good.1 point

Yeah the bottom of the zone has been getting calls. That last one to Baddoo was egregious.1 point

he certainly could have - that would be the conventional play, and he'd be moving in on the throw, which is helpful. But I hesitate to say a guy did it wrong if he got the out - adding the time for the transfer might have ended up IFH. Conversely, deciding to use your right hand adds risk because even if you are good with your right hand if the ball picks up some spin you're not likely to hold on. It all depends on how fast Keith believed he could make the transfer and throw if he charges and whether he was right about what he believed.1 point

As somebody that has been playing golf since they were 8 years old if I ever get a hole in one I think I would react similarly but would probably get winded half way to the hole. lol1 point

To us it looks that way but even last year some of the national talking heads were saying he is destined for LF. I just wish that the organization would make a decision...is he a 2B, or a 3B? And then whatever the decision is, put him there and leave him there. Is there anyone in the organization who can make that definitive assessment? What does Trammell do for a living?1 point

Look around—other can’t-miss guys have struggled, too. Joey Bart, CJ Abrams, Jerred Kellenic, Alex Kirilloff, JJ Bleday, Nick Madrigal—none has lived up to their hype (yet). Heck, Austin Martin, who was heavily debated as a potential alternative to drafting Tork, has yet to make the majors.1 point

Torkelson's last ~250 AB his OPS is 770, pacing for 30 HR and 90 RBI per season. His OBP still needs to come up - it's about 330 for that stretch, but considering he is just now reaching one full season's worth of experience in the majors (~700PA) he's doing fine. Tork has two problems in terms of fan perception - he's not going to hit for as high average as Riley, and he had a terrible April which keeps his season stats depressed.1 point

Yawn. My dad and I are tied with 0. What’s more, my son (which I do not have any offspring of the male variety) is also tied with us at 0. Three generations tied with the same number of home runs. Go ahead, top that.1 point
