It's a 2,000 year old antisemitic insult. Seriously, you guys didn't know this? I don't want to try to explain it, it just takes too long with too many examples/ variations/ etc... But they've been known as "moneylenders" (Jesus hates them...), greedy, bankers that Kings were forced to borrow from and then kicked them out of the country so the kings could dismiss all their loans, accused of "controlling the world" through their purse strings.. etc. This is NOT an innocent statement or insult. It's a pointed antisemitic (anti-Jewish more specifically) trope that has beget expulsions/ pogroms/ hatred/ murder/ etc. I'll let the Guardian explain in more detail: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/mar/09/jews-money-antisemitism-judas-shylock-capitalism Here's King Edward's expulsion of Jews from England in 1290 (not primarily over money but took advantage of...): https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/education/resources/jews-in-england-1290/#:~:text=In 1287%2C in the duchy, community faced the same fate. Following the Statute of Jewry c. 1275, the situation for England’s Jewish community declined further still. In 1287, in the duchy of Gascony (an area of modern-day France under English rule), King Edward ordered the local Jews to be expelled. All their property was seized by the crown and all outstanding debts owed to Jews were transferred to the king’s name. Shortly later, England’s Jewish community faced the same fate. By the time King Edward returned to England in 1289, he was deeply in debt. The next summer he summoned his knights to introduce a steep tax on his people. To make the tax more bearable Edward essentially offered to expel all Jews in exchange. The heavy tax was passed, and three days later, on 18th July 1290, writs (letters) were issued to the sheriffs of every county outlining that all Jews should leave England by All Saint’s Day (1st November 1290). Jews were allowed to take their possessions with them, but the vast majority had their houses forfeited to the king. Jews were forced into moneylending because they were not allowed to do anything else; and Christians were forbidden from usury (charging interest on moneylending): https://daily.jstor.org/licoricia-jewish-medieval-women-moneylenders/ Constant confiscation of Jewish wealth, and dismissal of Jewish loans, in the Middle Ages: https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/banking-and-bankers2 points

I am not right very often, but I was on this one. but I thought he was a Free Agent. I think this spells the end of Austin Meadows and Akil Baddoo wearing the Olde English D.2 points

Agree that paying Baddoo $1.7M to be insurance at AAA is an easy decision.1 point
-
He's on track to make 1.7M per MLBTR... So about twice the minimum. I don't mind keeping somebody like that in AAA if you need him. Also, stuff happens. Greene has a setback, Parker Meadows doesn't hit, somebody else gets hurt, and he's there. It's better than having to go get Jake Marisnick again. p.s. As for Super 2. Anybody with three years of more of service time are arbitration eligible. Effectively, everybody between 2 and 3 is ranked by service time (counted to the day) and the top 22% of them are eligible for arbitration. Arbitration just means the player can negotiate their salary. Yes, you can non-tender (not offer), but somebody like Baddoo is a worth a lot more than what he'll get in arb on the free agent market.1 point

I still think the Lions at their best are better than the Hawks at their best. Two bad turnovers from winning by double digits and then likely a coin toss from winning anyway.1 point

I've noted before that Ono is a different generation and different history than any of the recent UM presidents. It should not be surprising if he positions the U much differently than any of his predicessors did. A Board of Regents full of law firm owners is a nice add to the mix here.1 point

.310 this year isn't great, but it's only slightly below average (League average this year was .320). As a reserve/break-glass-in-case-of-emergency type you can do worse, and he's not priced in such a way that you don't keep him around and make sure he doesn't have more in the tank. Worth the offseason roster spot, worth the flier.1 point
-
I don’t care too much about which bench players will make the team, especially one week into the offseason. I would, however, like to significantly upgrade at least one spot in the lineup, Ideally two, with proven major league bats. I think Keith will be our Opening Day 2B. Other spots to upgrade are at 3B, C and OF.1 point
-
I don't care if they keep him as a minor leaguer if they have room, but he has not progressed as an MLB hitter since his rookie season and you really can't live with his OBP from a corner OF. If he goes to Toledo and makes some strides in his hitting then I like nothing more than for him to force himself back onto the roster.1 point
-
I don't see why you let Baddoo go. Maybe there's a trade partner, but he's still a 25 year old with a decent track record that you can stash in Toledo if you need. MLBTR has him around $1.7M through arbitration. Worth keeping around.1 point

i give walters credit for putting his name on it unlike other "anonymous" coaches. but if youre not changing your signs every week then you deserve to get your signs stolen. i seriously doubt this was a huge inconienence or made any significant difference in the outcome of the game. that's not making an excuse for michigan, if rules were broken they should be punished accordingly. but all of this whining by coaches is laughable, imo. the postgame handshake was weak ****. you got beat by a better team, man up.1 point

Hateful people don't mean it as a compliment, but I don't think the world is filled with hateful people. It's filled more with well meaning, but ignorant people.1 point

They also had the second best run differential/pythag record in the league (96-66).1 point

I just look at Wacha’s Ref card and he has what is probably the most complicated set of options I have ever seen. There was a $16MM team option and a $6.5MM player option for 2024, and since the team declined their option, Wacha can still exercise his option. If the team exercised their 2024 option, there would be another $16MM team option and $6MM player option for 2025, but since the team option was declined for 2024, if Wacha exercises his 2024 player option, he has the player option for 2025. But if the team then exercised its 2025 option after Wacha exercises his 2024 player option, then Wacha would lose his 2026 player option for $6 million. But if Wacha exercises his player options for both 2024 and 2025, then he would have a 2026 player option for $6 million at his disposal. Got all that?1 point

Wings take 5-3 lead. If they can hang on, this will turn heads around the league. This after it looked early as if they were going to be blown off the ice, when the Bruins made 2-0 look quick and easy.1 point

It's like having a coach out on the field with the other players.1 point

The bat isn’t what worries me given his resume of controlling the plate. I think the better than league average SO% and BB% with average hard hit rates will be helpful in the lineup. It’s possible he loses it next season, but he still had it last season without a sharp drop from the season before. I don’t like the defensive fit from what I’m seeing. Looks like he’s below average range and arm on savant. I’d like to see the Tigers put a little more emphasis on defensive aptitude in the outfield than we’ve seen in the past. However, the price isn’t much to worry about. The free agent market is poor. They had to bring in a righty OF bat and they did that without sacrificing too much projected future value and maintaining longer term roster/salary sanity. And if Harris/Hinch like the veteran makeup on an otherwise younger club, that’s an understandable asset to acquire. This shouldn’t preclude them from making a deal for another better RHH OF if it comes along.1 point

A lot of offseason left, but wonder if the Tigers view Vierling as a viable option at 3B, keeping the hot corner warm for Jung?1 point
-
A quality RH OF bat with decent defense? Yes. Or put Vierling in the OF in a platoon split with Baddoo. Then we would need a good defense/bat at 3rd base. But this guy we got today? Meaningless. Treading water. Not inspiring. I hear he's good at getting beaned, that should be fun. 🤣1 point

Made me laugh, good job. A weak hitting, old, slow NL player isn't a big deal, it's why we only had to give nothing up for him. The only thing this trade did was create some Tigers chatter.....too many posts about a utility OF who prolly won't make much difference in 2024.1 point

Greene > Carpenter, and it’s not even close. Still very questionable if Carp is not another Boesch. I might have felt differently if he had ended the season better. Of course I’m pulling for him, but selling high might not be a bad outcome if we can improve elsewhere.1 point

Eduardo was also the only other guy on the team from Venezuela.1 point

I am not worried about the salary. It's just one year. It's encouraging that they are willing to take on a salary to win now. They need a right-handed hitter and I love players that get on base.1 point
-
Anyways, good job identifying a useful player before he hits free agency, taking on a contract another team was unwilling to play. He's a good fit with all the LHH outfielders on this club, even if not an every-day player. If they wait until free agency, he is likely demanding a multi-year deal. Now you get him for one year, 11.5M. A bit pricey for a 400-PA guy, but a good fit.1 point
