But to oblong’s point, maybe these weren’t the numbers that the sides last exchanged. Maybe they weren’t exchanged at all. We don’t know. What we do know is the $25K difference. It isn’t a good look for the Tigers regardless of the path either/both sides took to get to their figures. That gets added to the pile of questions such as the non trade of Rodriguez, which Harris takes the L in public opinion for that (justified or not).2 points

Mike Florio is reporting that Caleb Williams representatives have begun talks with the Bears. He has asked for a few minor accommodations: - The Chicago dog will no longer be served anywhere in the city with a pickle spear or tomato slice. - He would not only like Cubs season tickets but also have the ability to be the team’s manager whenever he chooses. - The top 20 floors of the Willis Tower are converted to his own personal penthouse. - A 300 foot statue of his likeness is erected in Lake Michigan overlooking what used to be called Navy Pier, which will be renamed Carl’s Pier, in honor of Caleb’s father.2 points

Arbitration is part of the business of MLB, but the very nature of the process has the potential upset a player peronally and thus it's something that both players and management try to avoid. Dombrowski and Avila, for example, made a point of it. Most players likely get over it quickly, but I don't think the notion that some player might get upset by it should be brushed aside so quickly.1 point

i think kane is an A. no other player who has had that surgery has come back and done anything. he's come back and is the same player he was last year production wise. he'll never be who he was in his prime, but he is the most creative and best offensive player on this team. whether or not he (and debrincat) sacrifice too much defense is another question. but he wasnt brought here to defend. he's exceeded expectations, imo. exceeds: kane, sprong, veleno, lyon, chairot, compher, gotisbehere, raymond meets: larkin, seider, walman, copp, fabbri does not meet: perron, rasmussen, kostin, holl, maata, petry, fischer, husso, reimer part of those grades are based on my expectations, part on production. for instance, chairot has been pretty good this year considering his last couple of seasons. compher's offense has been a plus and a surprise. i expected more from rasmussen. he's been muted this year. perron looks his age. the defensive signings have not worked out and are serving to hold edvinsson back. the goaltending other than lyon has been atrocious. a word on edvinsson: he wasnt all that when he was here. he had a similar problem to what i saw in the preseason: no urgency to his game. seider became a physical force (for a while) his second year. edvinsson needs that leap. whether he develops it or not he should be in detroit right now. petry is cooked. holl and maata are regular healthy scratches. in hindsight, yzerman spent too much money on old defense this offseason.1 point

Yeah, it’s gonna be bad. So OK you could have a dome but the NFL still wouldn’t want people stranded in it due to weather disaster, like the Superdome, or, worse, stranded on roads going to or from the stadium.1 point

Tyreek is an outlier, I think of guys like Tavon Austin, Darius Heyward-Bey, John Ross among a host of others who had blazing straight line speed and everybody thought it would translate onto the football field and it never did.... cause it rarely does in fact unless they have other skills to go with it.1 point

What are you talking about? Laporta had the third best 40 of any TE at the combine. Better than all the other top TE candidates.1 point

CJGJ and Branch are pretty good against the run so you wouldn't be sacrificing a lot against the run.1 point

Please tell me you’ve considered that leaving might be financially unrealistic, or might not have the freedom to do so. Also, if you’re going to ask that question of women, might we not also ask it of men - who have wives, mothers, sisters, nieces, granddaughters, etc?1 point

I know for myself going back to last offseason, I could see both sides of the argument for and against Candelario. I slightly preferred bringing him back, but I understand why the did what they did, and so I slept just fine after they let him loose. He's had a bit of a volatile career, so while I didn't think he'd repeat his 2022, I didn't expect his 2023. I thought slightly above average was likely, somewhere around 110 OPS+ for a quick number. As for the deal with the Reds, again, volatile career. I'd probably have ponied up a 2 year with a vesting 3rd, maybe load up some incentives for him. I'm not sure I'm as optimistic as most with Jung as most around here, certainly not for 2024.1 point

I wanted him on the team last year. Not sure if I wanted him for four years starting at age 30.1 point

I am just surprised this board has spent such little time discussing the Candelario situation. /s1 point

That list is the saddest testament ever to over 60 years of International signings with DAMN NEAR nothing to show for it. Damn near nothing. The two best players they signed: Eugenio Suarez at 20 career WAR and Willy Adames at 18+ career WAR... they dumped before they did anything with Detroit. Damn close to a big fat 0 with ALL of our international signings. So sad.1 point

sure with Mize it's a small gap but add up those small gaps among several players and you have a big gap. I'm very pro player on these kinds of things. In this case I'm just pushing back on narratives that to me are unfounded. By assuming the org should always bend to the player automatically gives the player the upper hand and puts them in a position to ask for more. If an org says X, then the player can say "Well, let's make it X plus Y" and the org should bend just to be nice? Casey Mize busted his ass and did everything the Tigers asked because they are paying his salary and he wants to recover and get a large deal down the line. Le'ts not pretend he's doing them favors by doing that. He's doing his job and got paid to do it.1 point

and it's only $25 for Mize too. I think people over react to these things. I doubt Mize batted an eye over it. They won't go to arbitration.1 point

He was sickened by how cheaters prospered this year and won the national championship out from under him, and decided he doesn't have the stomach to compete in such a dirty environment.1 point
