  2. I listened to a little bit of sports talk radio during the Lions playoff run and immediately was reminded why I quit. I don't know much about football so I was trying to get a feel for things, between this site and the radio. Then I quickly realized I know more than the callers. It adds no value to my understanding of any sport. That's why this site is so good. and why a site like Twitter can still exist and give me something if I stay on top of who I read and don't read.

  3. To be fair, those were claims made by Bauer’s side. You don’t know the provenance, timing or context of the texts or video.

  6. That's the problem. The big money interests need the cult because that is were the voters are to keep them in power - they certainly can't run on the popularity of being robber barons. But the robber barons don't care really care about liberty or justice or good schools or even good roads, they will always be insulated against those things by their wealth, so they are perfectly happy to appease the cult in way that are destructive to the overall society. So their motivation is immaterial to whether the damage done is real. Back in the day - in the post WWII era, there was a concept that had some currency that the rich should be interested in good public policy because to invert the phrase - "what was good for the US was good for GM", that in a heathy society business ultimately does better. But that has broken down because we have a capital class today that doesn't even really care if their businesses to well, as long as they can squeeze all the value out out them, then buy up and squeeze another one dry. Any remaining idea of 'Noblesse Oblige" is dead in America today. Trump is a great fit in that milieu since he cares about nothing but himself anyway.

  8. He likes to talk tough, but his actions were often moderate compared to many on the right far right wing. Tariffs, bailing out farmers, stimulus checks (he wanted to give people even more in the fall), massive debt. He is a populist demagogue psychopath who will say and do anything to get himself re-elected.

  9. It actually a good question, but the cross over I think is Racially Pure Patriarchy. The ascendancy of the tribally empowered white male is threatened by female power (sex) and circumscribed by the power of the organized masses (democracy and majority government of the great unwashed). That mindset lets you be puritanical and anti government.

  13. Kirk Gibson was the manager in Arizona when Bauer was run off. He is probably somebody Dan talks to a bunch, and does have a special assistant title. He probably knows some of his issues. I really did just post because it was interesting to hear Dickerson, who usually isn't a hot take artist, come down hard on the issue. In my quick googling, it looked to me like the judge denied a few of Bauer's requests, and the suits by both parties were dropped. There has been a lot of gaslighting from Bauer and his camp that has permeated certain corners of the internet, though. I also don't approve of Dan's use of mentally ill as a pejorative I got a kick out of the suggestion from a baseball standpoint, suggesting to go spend money on a starter when you are already looking at demoting one of Mize or Manning to start the year.

  16. for all the lauding of houston and the hand wringing about how they were more successful in their rebuild than detroit, the rockets are currently 4.5 games out of TENTH in the west. are they better than detroit this year? duh. of course. every team not named the washington wizards is better than detroit this year. but are they a success? i dont think so. and are they going to be better than detroit long term? that still remains to be seen. depends on whether the pistons can turn this cap space into useful parts.

  18. The story out of Russia that Navalny's mother has not been allowed to take away her son's body for burial SHOULD hit the feels of all the self-described Christians in the GOP. The Pieta happens to be one of the most sacred images in the entire Christian canon. I'm just saying.

  19. wait, what? [edit: i was going to add in some context for my response but wasn't sure if you were being snarky. I mean, come on, this is the Russia that has almost the entire GOP dancing on its string because of the crap they accumulated from their cell phones and other dirty kompromat. The thing you want to look at in particular is a specific hack that nation states have against certain cell phone providers]

  20. Jason had a lot of zingers last night. After Hummel was citing points per possession, one of Purdue's guys made a three. "That was three points per possession."

  21. Dan needs to read up on the Bauer issue. During discovery they got texts from his accuser's phone that she sent to her friend explicitly laying out her plan to extort him. Videos of her next to him while he slept laughing about it. Bauer is a known world-class D-bag, and if that's a deal breaker, cool. But seeing Dan do MLB PR like this is really disappointing.

  30. I was interested in spending big money on Yamamoto and Hader... But they actually have to be interested in signing with the Tigers. It takes two to tango. And if they weren't really interested in the Tigers... and maybe Harris was not interested in THEM...? Then... I am perfectly fine with all the Plan B guys that he picked up this offseason. I think Harris has been pretty close to perfect in finding guys that weren't stupid overspends, filled needs, have above-average capabilities... and have positioned this team to make a run at the playoffs. There will be future opportunities to spend big money on big-time players. Including... Our own.

  31. I would argue that much of the development we see is in spite of them. Go in a mile radius around Comerica and LCA and any rot you see is their buildings. They buy stuff. Let it sit. Then claim it has to go. A lot of development has taken place but it’s not them. Very few of their promises have been kept. that said… I am one who doesn’t kind the parking lots. Like G2 says… where are we going to park? I hate parking structures. I am mad that UM is taking over the largest, and farthest, lot from Comerica. I could always park there for $8 in advance.

  32. I think the Ilitch record is a mixed bag. They have definitely been a catalyst for the area around the ballpark and they have put in as big a share or more of their own money as sports ownership anywhere else. What they are guilty of is overpromising on secondary development projects they never had any particular interest in but signed up for to oil the political skids on the projects they wanted. The other big knock is that that don't want to see the parking lots developed. Well, d'OH! If I had direct interest in filling 3,500,000 seats downtown every 12months in a city where everyone has to drive to my venues, because public transit is non-existent and the population is all over 3 counties, I think I'd want to be forgiven for wanting to keep a lot of parking available. That just the reality of operating those venues in Detroit. It's not NYC with a subway line or even Minneapolis with trolley busses and light rail all around the park.

  34. Fangraphs has the payroll at $108 million. https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/payroll/tigers I was skeptical of Harris going into the offseason but I really like what they have done to improve the roster. I think Edman's 26 man is correct and Baddoo is back in Toledo with McKinstry, Ibanez and Vierling on the bench. If the kids are really tearing up Toledo then Urshela and Canha are trade bait. I don't blame them for not signing any overpriced free agents. It was a really poor quality group who wanted big money because they were the "best" available. No need to overpay when there are legitimate prospects in the system.

  35. Ku Kahil dropped a show today talking about the misuse of Ausar in this offense. Basically discussing the (false) idea that you always need 4 shooters on the court. He mostly referenced a lot of JJ Redick's info, so I'll post one of JJ's pods below where he talks about this concept in reference to how Willie Green is using Zion and even how Ben Simmons was used when JJ played with him. On a previous pod he talked about this concept using some of the actions that Quin Snyder runs in Atlanta. And, of course, you've all heard me talk about how the Warriors use Draymond and Looney together with the other three guys running off-ball screens to free up shooters and otherwise bend the defense. Nobody is saying that this core has the talent level of some of those other teams, but every time you see Ausar standing in the corner and the Pistons playing 4 on 5 offense, that's on Monty. The only thing worse than his lineups are his offensive sets and lack of creativity.
