At the Lions-Bucs playoff game, Carlton Davis’ mother and family sat two rows in front of me. When he was called for a penalty late in the game, my (dumbass) friend yelled out “WHAT HAPPENED DAVIS” and his mother turned around and said “Some BULL**** that’s what!”3 points

We have been talking about how people who don't follow politics view Trump - the Dems just got a freebie they couldn't have bought for $100M. DJT showing himself to be churlish and childish and dismissed as another perp waiting for sentencing in front an audience of tens of millions would who no more likely ever see one of Trump's posts than the man in the moon.3 points

i'm really hoping the city and state give the white sox and bears nothing. the thought of the sox moving to nashville would make me so happy. but that wont happen. the city will fold and give them whatever they want. the state will give them a bunch of tax revenue backed bonds that my tax dollars will be paying back for the next 30 years. they still owe hundreds of millions for the soldier field renovation. the best bet is that the bears end up in arlington heights. there has been no real talk here about them building anything on the comiskey site, its all focused on arlington heights and the lakefront.2 points

This is one of my favorite days in the offseason. Everybody pays attention to the Draft but it's the real die-hards that are glued to screens for the start of legal tampering. Holmes was busy last year on this day. Extended Buggs in the morning (which we generally liked), then made the big deal to get Sutton (which we loved), and then extended Anzalone (which we hated). In fairness to my reactions that are coming today and this week - I was badly wrong about Anzalone. Anzalone was the leader of this defense last year and $6.1MM yearly seems like a bargain a year later.2 points

Remember that block by Craig Reynolds against Tampa last year? The player he lit up is none other than Carlton Davis.1 point
-
I don't hate the player by any means, just as I don't hate Cam Sutton either. I just don't know if we acquire our CB1 that will be our primary corner going up against other teams WR1. In Tampa I believe Jamel Dean was their CB1 and received a lot of the top matchups.1 point

Why do you keep comparing him to Sutton? Sutton isn't going anywhere. He's replacing Jerry Jacobs and Kindle Vildor. He is an upgrade over those two.1 point

It essentially amounted to about a 4th with the two 6ths in return. Not so bad IMO, this is more of a win now mode and they still have 3 picks in the first 3 rounds. Also, it was the Lions 3rd not the Vikings one so a lot closer to a 4th.1 point

That comp was more than what I was expecting. Have to say, I don't find this move very exciting.1 point

I think society has been slow to recognize how completely the landscape has changed. Our traditional understanding of needing a 1st amendment to protect the ability of people to speak needs updating to a recognition that in the current world, the greater problem is not being denied access to add to the infosphere, is the need to protect it from a level of pollution so deep that the public cannot becoming accurate informed by it. I'm not sure how you get there, but it's an issue the US needs to start thinking about more seriously. I think dumping the 'actual malice' requirements for public figures (which is actually everyone in a viral internet age) to enforce slander/libel would be one place to start. The rest of world seems to function without that level of (over)protection for public falsehoods.1 point

Those folks you saw at the game with the Carlton Davis jerseys will be happy!1 point

Dingell's recent update says the vote was to require that the service reorganize with US ownership of the US service as opposed to banning the type of service per se.1 point

I like Alim a lot. He's probably one of the most underrated players on the team. But I think one more elite player on that defensive front, alongside Hutch, would make a world of difference for the entire defense.1 point

This is an outrageous amount of money for an aging running back who has not played a full season since his rookie year.1 point

Pretty much, I like the "Holmes" strategy. I'd hoard draft picks and keep pumping young blood into the system. No problem splurging on a free agent who really fits, but give up premium draft capital and pay a premium salary for one player, no.1 point
-
I think he is in that elite tier, and I think he would probably be the best pass-rushing DT we've had since Suh. I don't want to get into a bidding war for a 28yo though1 point

That trade was what made me realize Smith was an awful GM. There have been trades with worse results, but a mediocre team trading away a bunch of young talent for a one-year rental who doesn't fit your new ballpark was just a bad idea. Avila was bad at player develpment, but that was a deal he would never make.1 point

Cool moment at the Oscars that Kimmel highlighted... 48 years ago these two were both nominated for Taxi Driver. This year they were both nominated again.1 point

The cap rose by $30m so every new contract is going to look like an overpay but it's the new market that people need to get used to. The market we saw last year doesn't exist anymore. This is why I'd be floored if Goff took a penny less than $50m/yr.1 point

depends how you mean it. technically the dividing line is madison in the loop. i dont consider places like the commodities exchange to be on the "southside." the "78" is just below the loop. south loop they call it now. the bears current stadium is south of the dividing line, do they play on the "southside"? i dont think so, they play on the lakefront. buckingham fountain is too. so to me just south of soldier field on the lakefront isnt "the southside." its the lakefront.1 point
-
I'd rather avoid trading high draft picks for veterans. Just stick to the plan, build through the draft and supplement through free agency.1 point

south of soldier field is not really "the south side." its right next to soldier field. the bears are likely bluffing. they paid $250 million for the site in arlington heights and have already begun work tearing down the existing structure. but because theyre the bears (i.e.: run by morons), they didnt plan on the locals not giving them public money and a big tax cut. when the local school districts told the bears to go **** themselves, they suddenly decided they wanted to stay in chicago. that site is on the lakefront. the "friends of the lakefront" group will tie this matter up in litigation for years before they allow the bears to build anything there. we were supposed to have a george lucas star wars museum there but the "friends" blocked it in court and lucas finally left and put it in LA. they will do the same thing for the bears. moreover, that site is park district land which may necessitate the bears letting the park district run the stadium like they do now, which means less money for the bears. the likely scenario is still that the bears move to arlington heights. it makes the most sense for everyone. this romantic idea of "bear weather" and "being on the lakefront" is the kind of thing that stupid people think about, not sophisticated business people running a multi-billion operation. but since were talking about the bears, "sophisticated business people" does not apply.1 point

One of the largest balancing acts for Biden in this campaign is hitting on the freedom side of his message while still speaking to middle class economics (which he did a pretty good job of in his SOTU, imo). Gifts like this from Trump will help a lot.... but even aside from that takeaway, it's striking how Trump seems even less coherent than in the past, which is saying something. A whole lot of words that make absolutely no sense when you read them aloud.1 point

The good news? In Project 2025 federal regulators and inspectors will only have to pass a loyalty test. I'm sure we will be very safe in an aircraft proven to be 100% loyal to Trump.1 point

if the ceo of my company told a customer "youre lucky i dont beat your ass" in public on video he would be fired immediately. troy weaver is not a player, he's a professional manager. you cannot act that way as a leader of an organization. the bare minimum is a suspension. if the pistons dont do it the league has to do it. lets be honest, this would be a great excuse to get rid of weaver, but gores isnt that smart or proactive.1 point

part of the job is taking criticism. you dont throw out a fan for being a jerk. that's bush league from weaver.1 point

Some clarification on Fontecchio and his free agent status this summer. Yes he is restricted meaning Detroit can match any offers. But no, they can't go over the cap to sign him. At least not the normal way. He is an early Bird rights player. That means they can go over the cap to sign him, but it isn't unlimited like normal Bird rights players. Early Bird you can go up to 175% of this years contract or 105% of the league average, whichever is larger. His contract this season is about $3m so they could offer just over $5m. The league average salary is around $8m so that will be the max they can offer without using cap space. Anything over that and they must have free cap space to sign him. Which is fine since they are projected to have almost $60m in cap space.1 point

30% is a big improvement on what he was shooting the first half of the season. Slowly but surely like I said. If he can get that percentage up to 33-35% or so, he's an All Star level player in 2-3 years like a better Herb Jones although he'll never be as good a long range shooter as Herb is.1 point

i think duren might end up as andre drummond. if he's andre that knows his limitations that's not a bad thing. if he's andre that thinks he's joel embiid, thats horrible. and to del's point, if he's PAID like andre was here, that's a waste of resources. it all depends on whether he gets a jumper and learns to play defense.1 point

Baez had his worst full season in the majors last year, while posting his best strike out rate ever. looks like he is trying to do just what they want him to do, and it has clearly all blown up in their faces1 point

Yes but hopefully Clark turns out better and plays both sides of the ball and with the money saved we signed Monigle who is top 100 close. So 2 for 1.1 point

So Michigan is set to join the multi-state poker compact. It basically lets online poker players play against people in other states. Currently you can only play against people in Michigan. 4 states in it so far. Michigan, New Jersey, Delaware, and Nevada. More will follow with PA probably next. Firekeepers hosted the fall MSPT event this past weekend. 2.409 people entered which is absolutely amazing. 1st place paid $344,446.1 point

For sure. Of course Randy sent him to KC before playing for the Tigers. Later on in his mid and late 30's he was hanging around in Toronto having ok seasons. Such a horrible horrible deal. That deal set the stage and was the symbol for the first 5 awful years at Comerica Park. Remebember the closing ceremonies at Tiger Stadium, they had Cordero, Kapler, and maybe Catalannato, riding in a van with police escort to take Home Plate to Comerica Park. The Future. Nah... we got other ideas.0 points
