  1. Nice little day—28th wedding anniversary (celebrating at the Chicago restaurant where I proposed many years ago). Tigers win, Sparty wins, Michigan loses. Couldn’t draw it up any better.

  2. Am still in Spain, still enjoying it, you’re right about the weather being ideal. I might have the Tigers game on for the first few innings in my hotel room but will be fast asleep for the Lions. I’m doing the Camino de Santiago - Frances route on foot, starting in St Jean Pied de Port just inside France a week ago today, up and over the Pyrenees, and now making my way across the top of Spain. Around 425k completed 8 days in, around 350k to go, done next weekend at some point if all goes well.

  6. We went to see Beetlejuice 2. And had dinner at…. Outback. A place I haven’t been in 20 years. But someone got us a gift card so we had to use it. I saw the game on a TV far away in the restaurant. Outback hasn’t changed at all. Not the menu. Not the decor. Even the prices weren’t much different. We talked about going there on our first vacation together in 1995. It was over $50 before tip and that was my threshold back then for an expensive meal. This meal was $75 with 2 drinks and an appetizer. Beetlejuice 2 was fun. Very fun.

  7. Dan Dickerson had a pretty raw critique of the A’s ownership for destroying 60 years of Oakland A’s tradition so he can go to “a city with no baseball tradition.“ Not exactly the corporate ass kissing line you would expect.

  8. Regarding the idea that Trump voter defection all happened back in 2018 or in 2020, I think J6 happening after that would add to the defections. And to the intensity of independent voters who might be tempted to side with him. Not everyone of them, of course, but enough I am fervently hoping.

  9. Team has played well enough over the last couple of months that 11 of the remaining 18 would be my baseline expectation. If they can steal an extra 2 or 3 more than that, it should get very interesting.

  10. This is going to be an all time terrible trade by the Browns, right up there with the Walker trade. The guy doesn't have the mental part of the game down. He looks completely lost out there.

  16. really good point. I can't tell you how many engineering database systems I've seen full of landmines because the data mining of the original sources made errors. Always tried to get access to original data to see what the data concatenator was really doing.

  17. Cops already feel free to tell you what you can and can not do. I was asked for my ID when in public places with cops a few times when I was younger, like in my late teens and twenties, places like on the street outside of bars in college towns and stuff, for no other reason than we were there, and civilians either don't feel confident enough or comfortable enough or even free to say no. I know I didn't. That right there is quasi-police state, isn't it? And that's not necessarily new or even unusual. Hell, the entire Jim Crow south was a fascist one-party police state. So the acceptance and even embracing of the idea of cops (and certain self-appointed civilian deputies) policing public spaces runs deep throughout the history of this country.

  21. Agreed. And I would like to point out a guy with money issues that will still linger even if he wins may benefit from completely tanking the Fed's independence and forcing their hand to lower interest rates so he can borrow to pay off E Jean and co.

  22. I agree on that side effect. It may be unintended but in general this idea that the police are authority figures rather than public servants and getting people used to seeing them everywhere is a dangerous path. It can be harmless if they are acting as a deterrent, like when you see them at large sporting events. But it’s not a leap to think that can transition to a scenario where they just start questioning your presence and can tell you what to do.

  25. Absolutely correct. I don't think this is unusual. The party in power is always going to be blamed/given credit for the economy. It's stupid, but that's how it has always been. What's going to happen next is people not recognizing that inflation has beeing getting under control over the past year. Then if Trump gets elected, they'll eventually feel the effects of something that was already in motion and Trump will get credit for it.

  26. I don’t like the idea of SROs, which are invariably either uniformed police or uniformed like police, being mandated in all schools because in certain cases it feeds into what is called the school-to-prison pipeline, getting students used to a surveillance officer who is suspicious of or even hostile to them and contributing to a mindset of what they deserve and should expect in life. I understand that the majority of adults, including parents, want SROs in place for when a school shooter shows up. I would counter with two things: (1) school shootings are a one-in-tens-of-thousands event that will never be experienced by 99+% of the kids in SRO-schools anyway; and (2) fat lot of good SROs did at Parkland and Uvalde, among others I’m sure. I think getting kids used to living in a police state under which they are constantly surveilled is a gateway drug to getting them to accept a fascist state as the normal state of affairs.

  34. I predicted super high turnout for 2020 on the old board, and I nor anyone else didn't have to be Nostra****ingdamus to get that one right. So I'm gonna go ahead and predict that this is going to be the greatest turnout for an election in American history, at least in numbers, if not in in percent of electorate, certainly higher than 2020.

  37. Cheney’s endorsement shows that today’s GOP is far removed from the party of Reagan and Bush. To those low information (not stupid) voters who are busy living their lives and not paying attention to details like us dorks, it presents another data point to enforce the idea that maybe both sides aren’t the same. A lot of people do think that. They see references to multiple trials with Trump and these former republicans going against him… again it doesn’t take much to make a difference.
