  1. Regarding Charlie Maxwell, on July 29, 1962 my dad’s Elks Club drove all of us kids from Auburn, Indiana in a rented school bus to Chicago to see a doubleheader vs. the Yankees, where the Sox’s player Charlie “Paw Paw” Maxwell hit three home runs in the split. I clearly remember him hitting at least one in each game and of my dad remarking upon it but I guess I lost interest and didn’t realize he’d actually hit three because I was 10 years old and I had to pee the whole time so my attention was somewhat scattered. I did get to see Mantle and Maris, which was a big deal although neither of them did anything memorable aside from batting practice, but I was pretty disappointed that my first game was not at Tiger Stadium and some woman sitting on the first base side constantly ringing a loud bell was extremely annoying, especially because I had to pee.

  2. I'm sure most of you saw this in the news. I'm gonna start a thread because I was 8 when he joined Detroit and even though the Tigers were terrible, I was fully into being fanatical by that time. Guys like Vern Ruhle, Tommy Veryzer, Leon Roberts, Milt May, Aurelio, Freehan, Dan Meyer.......all meant a lot to me. And Gary was a big part of that gang. RIP Mr Sutherland

  6. Too many people think of college courses as you learn “what to think” rather than “how to think”. And it’s interesting seeing this play out in a math/science vs humanities/literature/etc sandbox, wondering why the math and science need the other. How many times has the discussion been reversed? I think both are valuable. Obviously there is a limit to how far you can go. But there is a benefit to the brain in both disciplines. No you don’t need algebra or even pre calc to do many jobs. Not specifically. But your brain and mind retained a structure and thought process that can help you. The same is true for the other side of education.

  7. I have joked before that humanities courses were good for boosting my GPA...and they were! However, in retrospect, I am also glad that I took some of them. Philosophy courses, in particular, have been valuable to my thinking and understanding of the world.

  8. Since I was too young to experience that 186-184 game I think my fondest memory of a Pistons/Nuggets game was the one where Sheed stole the inbound pass and made a 3/4 court buzzer beater to send the game into OT.

  9. i can see how it would look like that if youre not seeing it every day. but its short term thinking instead of long term planning. almost every nfl team "plays hard down the stretch" regardless of their record. most nfl games are decided by one or two scores. good teams win those games. the real question is what do you want your franchise to be? what's your identity as a team? you have the #1 pick. you have a chance to get it right with a team centered around caleb williams and instead you keep your defensive head coach and let him hire another offensive coordinator, after he had to fire his first OC because he was so bad. why did you think this time would be different? because youre a bad organization who doesnt know what its doing. guess what? it wasnt different. the same coach that messed up the first hiring (the original oc was luke getsy who was subsequently hired by the raiders - another **** organization - and then fired midseason) messed up the second hire. speaking of the raiders, they hired antonio pierce after they "played hard down the stretch last year and won some games." this year he's 4-11.

  10. When I started my career I also had to handle sales. We started from zero. One of my first customers, who were businesses, was from Paw Paw. I asked the guy if he knew of Charlie and of course he did. When I would talk to him again he’d even mention running into him or family.

  11. Pena was at least a plus fielder and had good plate discipline, so there was other value besides power potential

  12. It’s unseasonably warm here today. I took the bicycle out for a spin. (1) It’s been a while, so it wasn’t the easiest of treks. (2) The unseasonably warm was being blown in by some fairly strong gusts, so it wasn’t the easiest of treks. Regardless, it was a better time than shoveling snow would have been.

  13. RIP Charlie Maxwell. I have always been fascinated by his Sunday home runs. 40 of his 148 career home runs came on Sunday.

  18. I think Bregman signs with the Tigers over the next 72 hours. Terms are 6 years/$192M. Player opt-out after two seasons.

  20. Rereading Vivek's screed, I find it wild that he apparently saw the movie "Whiplash" and thinks that JK Simmons was the good guy. Elon probably thinks that too given how he treats his employees

  21. no argument with this take but I don't profess any idea of whether Torres is a player more likely to upset or solidify team spirit.

  22. last year the Tigers were pretty good at run prevention once they got things figured out. I'd hate to lose that for the sake of 112 OPS+ career hitter. We don't know if Keith is going to master 1st, Torres is not good defensively, SS and 3B are still question marks. It may all work out fine, or it may turn out to be a GM over-shuffling the cards.

  24. I view it as a hedge that Skubal will bail. Burnes is a true ace—he’d give us two, along with Jobe, that would give us a big edge over the next couple of seasons.

  26. Almost all charter schools have folded in Indiana now that we have 100% voucher coverage. If they can not fulfill DOE Academic Standards they lose state funding. The flip side being Parochial schools are thriving. Most of them operate PK-12 chools and are much more established. They have managed my sons IEP great, his best friend has Cerebral Palsy and I think the Parochial school setting has helped him a ton. It helps most classrooms are limited to 18 students so kids that need the extra help have extra time with their teacher.

  28. The world's richest man is currently out there at Trump's side, showing up at public appearances, being involved with official events overseas (such as the one last month in France) and making statements that directly impacted budget negotiations and the debt ceiling debate I'm not sure how one can look at the state of play and not see how, at the very least in terms of optics, all of this makes Trump look like a vassal for the world's richest man. I think someone would have to have their head buried in the sand in order not see it even
