  1. Do other fan bases hang onto their aging stars the way Detroit sports fans do? If Harris/Hinch thought Verlander would help the team more than Cobb would, he'd be a Tiger. I want my FO making decisions based on what they think makes the team better as opposed to feel-good fan service.

  2. I'm fully expecting to have to do my shopping around next year. Glad my **** renewed already for 2025. My previous insurer tried to pass off a 50% premium increase on my house from 2023-2024. Tip: If you have any older relatives help them out with their car and home insurance in terms of pricing around. My mother in law had AAA her whole life. She just assumed she was getting "the best" deal because she gets it through her Catholic Credit Union. We saved her $75 a month this year by making a few phone calls on her behalf. She's not a dummy. But the way things work now is intimidating with all the apps and logins etc. She gets flustered.

  3. is there a more annoying local media personality than Ryan Ermani? He's on Fox 2 and does a podcast or something and man... is his football knowledge so generic and shallow. I'm a total bandwagoner and I feel like I know more than he does. Says the most basic things as if he unearthed something meaningful. Just now on the news he says "Let me explain the divisional round for you. (dramatic pause). If the Lions win on Saturday, then win again the next week at home.. (dramatic pause)... the Lions are going to the Super Bowl" He does this kind of thing constantly.

  5. the dominance of the yankees really distorts this. the tigers arent that bad when you consider the competition. yankees 27, cards 11, red sox and A's 9, dodgers and giants 8, pirates and reds 5. then the tigers. ahead of the cubs and sox, orioles twins/senators, and indians. the tigers really havent had a dynasty. the closest was the greenberg/gehringer teams in the 30s and 40s who had 4 world series and 2 titles in 11 years from 34 to 45. other than that its really been one offs. 68 and 84. those teams never achieved dynasty status because of the yankees and the 80s group underachieving. the other group was the cabrera/verlander teams that never won it all and probably underahieved, especially 2013.

  6. I have a hunch Harris did kick the tires and JV declined. As others posted, he is all about 100% focus. In det he would have reporters in his face constantly with the same questions about "returning home." Maybe we'll never find out. Another issue may have been this current squad finally took steps to forge an identity. JV would have been bringing the past era that was a great era, but long gone. The rebuild has been beyond frustrating at times. Hopefully the team continues to build on their new identity and get back to work, starting in about 6 weeks

  7. This could be the last chance for Minnesota. Kwesi has only drafted one starter in the past three drafts. The Vikings only have three picks in this draft. They also have a lot of free agents, not just Darnold. I just can't believe they keep winning despite drafting so poorly. It's going to catch up eventually.

  8. 13 JANUARY 1775, DARIEN, GEORGIA: With Georgia participating in neither the First Continental Congress nor the nonimportation movement, residents of St. Andrew’s Parish pass resolutions in support of both, as well as a resolution expressing their “abhorrence” of slavery. To show a feeling of “general philanthropy for all mankind, of whatever climate, language or complexion,” they condemn “a practice founded in injustice and cruelty” and promise to work for its abolition “upon the most safe and equitable footing for the masters and themselves.” https://bsky.app/profile/revwar250.bsky.social/post/3lfnlys642p2r

  9. 100% spot on.... I love JV for what he did in a Tigers uniform, but while I think there's an argument that there are ways that he could improve the 2025 team, the fact that they went in a different direction isn't worthy of all of the attention and energy it has generated in the Tiger zeitgeist.

  10. Yes, especially now when they have a legitimate chance to make the playoffs with a couple of acquisitions.

  11. Detroit Tiger fans have been conditioned to live in the past. As such, they live too much in the past. Not to mention the fact that most Michiganders have a deep seated inferiority complex. They are ravenous for the social acceptance by the cool kids from NY and LA. Having Verlander retire here would subconsciously affirm some love from their idol. It's long past time to move on.

  21. Commanders is lame-ish as a name but a lot of contending names were just as lame. Red Tails (for the Tuskegee Airmen) would have been weird and led to a lot of unfortunateness. I really liked Washington Team Football as a name. Still, its not my football tradition. I've sat in amongst a lot of people who really are angry about losing the Redskins name where they cite the Seminoles or other tribal names for Native American teams that seem to work. I will sometimes try to spin it back on them with sarcasm about skin color being a bad basis for team naming. It gets political of course.

  24. Mobley is not a #1 option though. He's in a phenomenal situation to make the best use of his talents, that wouldn't have happened in Detroit. Cade was and is the right choice.

  25. And it simply doesn’t matter today to half the voting populace who is right and who is wrong, factually, in a debate. The facts of the issues don’t matter anymore in terms of changing votes.

  27. Two things. First, I have nothing against Austin Jackson, but I haven’t thought about him once in 10 years and I don’t know how much I actually have to infer from what he said. I mean, it’s not like he’s Joe Falls or something. <rimshot> Second, the reality of the situation is that the club probably doesn’t want JV blocking one of the new guys who might otherwise be having a breakout season. Someone else already mentioned the “blocking“ issue and I think that’s a salient insight. An adjacent issue is the whole camaraderie band of brothers thing which is a really fetch thing, but there’s not a lot of room for that or for nostalgia to be in play in this situation. He’s a grown man. The Tigers made their decision and he made his and that’s that.

  28. With all the focus on the free agent pitchers, another possible way to go is to try and get Dylan Cease from SD. They’re reportedly trying to trim a bit of payroll- and Cease is good enough where I’d be fine with some prospect capital going their way. He’s still on the right side of 30 and hasn’t had injuries.

  33. I did a thing and booked a (fully refundable) AirBnB in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for 2/7-2/10. No way I could ever afford tickets to the game, but just being on Bourbon Street would be amazing. Don't let me down boys.

  35. The Tiger Territory episode is kinda what I'm getting at.... I get that it's the offseason and there isn't a ton to talk about, but they spent damn near half the episode talking about Justin Verlander. When it's not even clear that the front office was ever even considering bringing him in or that JV was interested in coming back.
