  1. regarding Biden and all that... I don't hold it against members of congress who thought he shouldn't run again. It was clear he shouldn't have. The first debate told us that. I'll never forget the shudder that went down my spine at one particular moment. That's when I knew he couldn't campaign and win. But I'm not expected to know that. People in DC who are connected.... they are. I'm sure things were discussed and that's the source for all the whispers and "backstabbing" we saw. They were right. People close to him should have come up with some kind of a succession plan.

  2. They are neither loosing nor losing young players because of McStinky. They aren't competing for the same roster spot. It's better for Jung to get everyday ABs in AAA than have McStinkys bench role in the majors.

  3. I didn't say they didn't know what they are doing. They know more than any of us. What I am saying is that if Keith is a capable defender at both positions, then he would have more value at second base. If he is deemed incapable of playing second base, that is disappointing, not because I think they are wrong but because I was hoping he would be a solid 2B. If he doesn't ever hit for the plus power that is generally expected of a first baseman, that would also be disappoining.

  5. Any scientist who voted for Trump SHOULD be ashamed of themselves. The anti-science, anti-education and disregard for the truth becoming more and more prevalent in this country is going to destroy us more than anything.

  6. I don't know that AOC would be the right candidate to run for that seat, even in deep blue New York, but what I do know is that Schumer has absolutely lost control of his caucus and, once this episode passes, probably needs to step aside and let someone else be Minority Leader. You don't have to be an AOC acolyte to see how badly he botched this.

  7. I sort of disagree with that as a general principle - you can say Al Kaline ended up at first base so they should have moved him there in 1956 because it was 'inevitable'. Players abilities do shift through their careers but you always want to take advantage of the best they can do for as long as they can do it. And I never count an MiLB player in decisions about major leaguers - just too many ways for them to fail before they ever play their first MLB game. Maybe if you have a guy at AAA already knocking down the door, but the Tigers best prospects are still too far away to bank on.

  8. It's such a muddled mess to me, I can't figure out my own thoughts on this let alone what our elected officials should do. It almost feels like Dems might be falling into a trap if the government shuts down. DOGE will do everything they can to keep furlowed employees from ever coming back. At the same time I've been craving for someone/anyone to take a stand against Trump and not giving into the GOP on the budget is one way to do it.

  9. AIPAC is not "the Jews" They are a radical political organization which does not fairly represent American Jews who support Israel, as they themselves support only right-wing Israeli policy and viewpoints, which is why MAGA and the Red Hats profess to love them so much. By way of example, AIPAC lobbied Congress to invade Iraq in 2003, and then spent time and treasure for the next several years defending their lobbying of that. They were also a principle player in the Lawrence Franklin espionage scandal in which the DoD employee passed classified intelligence about Iran to them, which they turned around and gave to the state of Israel. More recently, they publicly backed dozens of racist, homophobic, QAnon-drenched election deniers during the past few elections, including Elise Stefanik, Scott Perry, Buddy Carter, Kat Cammack, and Burgess Owens. I don't think "the Jews" should be held responsible for the actions of AIPAC any more than they should be held responsible for controlling the world's banking system. You can equate Zionist extremists as "the Jews" if you like, and that's your privilege in a still-free-for-the-moment America. But I will continue to reject that idea.

  12. I remember the first time I landed at LAX in the early 70's. You could see the brown miasma settled in the basin as you flew in. Since it was sunny CA they still did not have jetways, it was the rolling stairways down onto the tarmac. When the door opened to the outside it took about 30 seconds for my eyes to start to sting. I wouldn't call the air in basin today great, but it's absolutely nothing like it was. Pittsburgh was another place I had to go a lot early in my working career. Everything was black from coal dust and soot regardless of what color it had started out. Again - you wouldn't believe how it was to see Pittsburgh today. OTOH - in Pittsburgh's case a whole industry did die to produce that change. The clean air and the jobs still there would have been a lot better.

  16. Found an interesting article on mlb.com, of all places, discussing teams' player turnover from last year to this. https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-teams-with-most-roster-turnover-in-2025 So many teams have made moves toward contending in 2025. But which clubs have done the most? Let’s take a look at the teams that have changed the most since last season -- whether for better or for worse. Using FanGraphs depth charts projections through March 5, we calculated what percentage of each club’s 2025 plate appearances (for hitters) and batters faced (for pitchers) will go to players who did not appear for that team in 2024 (represented as "turnover rate" below). Here’s the full list of turnover rates from 2024 to 2025. 1. White Sox: 42.3% 2. Angels: 36.5% 3. Red Sox: 35.6% 4. Marlins: 35.2% 5. Nationals: 34.5% 6. Cubs: 34.5% 7. Pirates: 32.7% 8. Dodgers: 32.5% 9. Reds: 31.1% 10. Astros: 30.5% 11-T. Athletics: 29.9% 11-T. Rangers: 29.9% 13. Yankees: 29.6% 14. Mets: 29.2% 15. Guardians: 27.3% 16. Rays: 25.9% 17. Brewers: 25.9% 18. Orioles: 25.6% 19. Blue Jays: 24.4% 20. Padres: 22.7% 21. Braves: 21.1% 22. Phillies: 20.3% 23. D-backs: 19.0% 24. Rockies: 18.0% 25. Giants: 17.2% 26. Tigers: 16.1% 27. Mariners: 16.0% 28. Royals: 15.9% 29. Twins: 13.9% 30. Cardinals: 10.3%

  17. Defensive stats are notoriously inconsistent, as you know, and the default answer is not necessarily whichever stats show him to be better at the position. Whatever analytics the Tigers use tell them that a combination of 2B Gleyber Torres and 1B Colt Keith projects to be worth more wins, taking their combined defense and Keith's reduced offensive value at first into account, than a combination of 2B Colt and 1B Spencer Torkelson would be, considering their combined defense and Colt's elevated offensive value at second. I'm willing to give the front office the chance to prove they know what they're doing in cases like these, until they demonstrate to me that they don't.

  20. You really didn't want to lose to the Wizards on your home court when you were in a 3 way tie for 4th and your next game is against OKC. Zero urgency, got beat to all the lose balls, and the defense was non-existent. JB didn't help matters at all by running his zero-defense lineup in the 4th. Where's Ausar? What about more Stew in the closing quarter? Nope. 18 minutes for Ausar in what has been a growing trend of Ausar's minutes and on-ball usage declining since Schroder has been fully integrated over the past couple of weeks. It makes no sense, since Ausar's rise was so closely linked with the team's success during the hot streak. Now we're seeing Ausar go back to his role when Ivey was in the lineup - in the corner or on the baseline exclusively rather than being used a ball-handler or screener. Ku did a segment on his podcast about it, so go check that out if you want more details and stats. It's a head scratching move by JB.

  23. The Athletic posted its Tigers’ Fan Survey for 2025 today. I think it’s paywalled so I can’t post it all, but I assume a few of the charts are OK. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6201650/2025/03/14/detroit-tigers-2025-fan-survey-results-optimism-on-rise/?source=user_shared_article Detroit Tigers 2025 fan survey results: Optimism is on the rise 80% of fans surveyed expect the Tigers to win 80-89 games, 12% in the 70s and 8% more than 90. Riley Greene is the favourite of 31% of Tigers fans, Skubal 27% and Parker Meadows 13%.

  25. People who take AIPAC money are the AIPAC wing of the party. January 6th wasn't 22 years ago and AIPAC chose to support insurrectionist candidates. If Warren's Progressive Change Campaign Committee or MoveOn or Democracy For America started supported insurrectionist candidates you'd be going crazy on here about it. Over 4,000 American servicemembers dead and hundreds-of-thousands of Iraqi civilians. Yeah, you know, get over it.

  27. I think this is a closer representation of AOC than is anyone's convenient characterization of a hate-all-Jews AOC. https://www.timesofisrael.com/rep-ocasio-cortez-slams-antisemitism-on-left-but-says-term-weaponized/ Washington, DC, on November 14, 2023. (Stefani Reynolds/AFP) New York Jewish Week via JTA — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez condemned antisemitism but accused her critics of “weaponizing” the term in a rare public discussion with two Jewish activists who have shined a spotlight on bigotry against Jews in the pro-Palestinian movement. “Antisemitism, hate and violence against Jews because of their identity is real and it is dangerous,” the New York City Democratic congresswoman said at the start of the virtual discussion on Monday. She added, “When the Jewish community is threatened, the progressive movement is undermined.” ... But later, she said, “It is also true that accusations and false accusations of antisemitism are wielded against people of color and women of color by bad-faith political actors, and weaponizing antisemitism is used to divide us.” This sounds like a very reasonable position to me.

That one act of undeniably high international virtue bought us a ton of good will in the world that we have managed to pretty much completely squander - Vietnam, TGWOT, and now Trump. Three strikes and 'yer out.

  30. Ignore me at your own peril…this is an excellent book. This is one of the best baseball books I’ve ever read. Anyone that enjoys reading about the game through Weaver’s years in baseball will love this book. As I said earlier, I’d never been an Earl Weaver fan over the years simply because I have never been an Orioles fan. The Amazon reviews on this book are spot on if anyone is interested.

  32. First time reposting a mastodon post. If anyone wants to re-litigate World War 2 and what happened to Germany and Japan as a result thereof. From my optic: it appears that every one of the Nazi companies value was reduced to zero and control was taken over by the conquering allies. For the Japanese it was a different matter but they all benefited from Allied occupation and reorganization.

I used to collect cards of the players in the scrapbook, including Tiger opponents. A '55 topps bertoria was one of them. I remember liking the name Bullet Bob Turley so I had several of his cards.

  41. I think his OF versatility keeps him on the roster until Meadows/Vierling return. McKinstry might not play CF or he might only play it in a pinch, but we know every position player on this roster not named Greene or Torres is a platoon player. With Torres playing only 2B, with Keith not really being that versatile, and with possible non gloves like Malloy/Torkelson making the roster, McKInstry' versatility is an asset for the time being.

  46. I’ve battled weight my whole life, lots of yo-yoing. It was psychological hell in the latter part of 2024, where I was stuck in this vicious mental cycle where I wanted so badly to lose weight but couldn’t get past the mental block of thinking it was just too much and I was incapable. Finally, October 18, 2024, I started calorie counting. I can’t tell you why that date, I just took the step. I didn’t tell anyone, not even my girlfriend of two years, for a month. I joined a local CrossFit gym in December, and it absolutely Kicked. My. Ass. But I kept going back. I was 312.4 on 10/18. As of this morning I’m 260.6. Down 51.8 pounds. I’m not sure my end goal, but I do think saying I lost 100 pounds would be cool. I’ve told a few people. Thought I would share here. 🙂
