  1. It was only 9 months ago that Baltimore's rebuild was considered to be miles ahead of the Tigers.

  2. With no game tonight, here for your viewing pleasure are 34 beatiful minutes of color footage from the 1968 season. This is similar to, but different than, the Year of the Tiger audio album that is loaded with Ernie Harwell and Ray Lane radio PBP. This is more Harwell narration than play by play.

  3. I never thought managers mattered all that much. Last year has me rethinking that assumption, at least a little.

  4. Hot take: Errors are dumb and should be eliminated. If the batter puts the ball in play and reaches base it should be a hit.

  5. The comp is McNeil, so if he turns into McNeil, it's a great pick at 28.

  12. Holmes with the cliche GM quote of "he was our top target" in regards to Williams. Funny how teams always seem to end up getting the guy they wanted all along every pick.

  15. I don't believe him. It's part of his narcissism. His self esteem is so low, he can never be wrong and it also makes him act grandiose to compensate. He will never be wrong. Preferably it's someone else's fault but if not he's just kidding.

  16. dt was a huge need this year and especially long term. i post "pundit" stuff because its a fun talking point, but i dont really believe they know more than most gms do. but its what makes the draft so fun. to laugh at the bears and to wonder what the heck brad holmes is going to do next. to fall in love with prospects and have brad holmes break your heart every year. draft grades right after the draft are dumb. dumb fun.

  18. I disagree about DE being a bigger need, if McNeil was healthy and Reader was his 2023 self then yeah but neither are the case. Our defense did fine last year without a pass rush, it wasn't until McNeil got hurt, Reader showed his age and opponents started running down our throats when the defense collapsed.

  19. I wasn't surprised at all by the pick. DC had made a comment during a press conference that they don't expect Alim McNeill back until later in the season, making the Lions very thin at the 3 technique.

  22. but brad said they dont! so they obviously dont. its just a huge coincidence that the top guy on their board last year happened to be a cb and this year happened to be a dt...

  23. brad holmes has shown he knows how to draft, so i think we'll all end up liking this pick at some point.

  24. theyre going to need defensive tackles after this year, so in that way it makes sense to get one. the lions value run stuffers more than most teams in the league, so that males sense too. like a couple years ago with gibbs and campbell, the lions like who they like and dont seem to care about traditional positional rankings. and for the bpa crowd: the lions took a position of need in defensive tackle. i assume he was one of the top players on their board, but this is a position of need.

  27. I didn't say this earlier when it happened, but I'm so happy to see the Bears do Bears things. To take a TE when they have one already and they passed on the perceived better of the two TEs in Loveland over Warren, I love it. Ben Johnson can talk all the **** he wants but the Bears are still doing Beary predictably dumb things.

  28. I could see the NFL draft 1st round lasting a month sometime in the future. One 1st round pick per day. They can have a 3 hour show discussing who will get picked and after, discussing the player picked. Then discuss the next days pick. It's bad enough they'll start having next year's mock drafts...next week.

  40. Remember when major leaguers left their gloves on the field while they came up to bat? Neither do I. And neither do you unless you're at least 80, because the rule requiring players to bring their gloves off the field was adopted during the winter of 1953-54. But, as with every rule change, there was vociferous opposition by the conservatives in the game. Well, going into 1954, those conservatives included the American League itself, which voted 7-1 to not require their teams to enforce the new rule. They objected partially on the basis of it never hurt anyone before (dubious claim), but, also, on the basis that it would unnecessarily delay games. Why, just imagine a player stranded on second base with the third out. All he had to do is trot to his glove just a few feet away and he's ready to go. But noooo ... now he's got to trudge all the way back to the dugout to get his glove and then go back out to his position in the field. Can you imagine how much time that will take?? Why, ball games will balloon to three hours if we make players take their gloves into the dugouts with them!

  42. So, Old Friend of Ours had a rough go: six innings, ten hits plus a walk, only four strikeouts, and six runs yielded. And he still got credit for a Quality Start. Why? Because only three of the six runs he gave up were earned, because he himself made an error to extend the inning and all three subsequent runs, including a bomb he gave up, went into the books as unearned. Baseball!

  43. No. He can still be traded in DFA Limbo. He goes through waivers and other teams have a chance to claim him. Whether acquired by trade or by waiver claim, the Rule 5 restrictions apply. If he clears waivers, the Cubs can't outright him to the minors without first offering him to the Tigers for $50k. Given the Tigers cut a AAA position player yesterday, i have a feeling they are optimistic they may be getting him back. If he returns to the Tigers, he has no such restrictions.

  44. I continue to be amazed at how differently I feel about the draft vs. just a few years ago. I mean the draft used to be this HUGE thing. We'd all be speculating... wondering about trades, thinking who might fall a few spots. Hoping the next first round pick in the top 10 (where the Lions often picked) was going to be the savior of the franchise. Now I keep forgetting that the draft starts Thursday. Look at our 2022 Draft thread: https://www.motownforums.com/topic/99-2022-nfl-draft-thread/page/58/#comments More than 57 pages of posts BEFORE the draft started! Now, 1.5 days from the start of this years draft and we don't even have 10 pages yet. I know the old joke was always about how the Draft was the Lions' Super Bowl... but man... being on the "other side" now (ie, having a good team) it feels like there really was a lot of truth to that joke.
