  1. So much to take away from this morning's standings in Reference: Second best record in baseball Best pythag WL in baseball Positive record against all AL divisions Tied for best home record and solidly .500 on the road Underwater in extra innings and one-run games means they are even more dominant than we think Equally tough on righties and lefties Holding serve with good teams and beating up on teams they should be Super consistent winning records in the last 10, 20, and 30 games. I know, a lot can happen in the next 126 games. But so far, this is the team I have been waiting for all my life.

  3. One of the last home games of 1991 was heavily-attended as Cecil Fielder was on Home Run 49 and nobody had seen 50 in years. Ron Cameron asked me and my friends "Are you here just to see Cecil hit No. 50?" and I said "No, I'm here to see Chet hit No. 5". And Chet did just that. Loved him. Always seem to play with a big smile on his face. Didn't seem the least bit jaded. I know his last years were a terrible struggle and I am glad he's not struggling anymore. One of the most underrated Center Fielder's in MLB history, but not in these parts.

  4. Coincidentally, I’m graduating Saturday with my M.A. in Theological Studies from a Catholic college (Jesuit-oriented) at the University of British Columbia. My quick reaction. Most North American cradle Catholics will like this pick, many North American convert Catholics might not. Despite what you might see on social media, convert Catholics are a minority within the Church but are zealous and outspoken. Increasing in importance. Younger priests, like the pastor of my parish, also tend to be more conversativr, hence the re-introduction of things like a communion rail in some parishes. Going into the conclave, I saw him as one of the best candidates but thought his being American would rule him out. Fact he is so international though, even being a naturalized Peruvian after 20 years there, and is fluent in Italian and Spanish, made him acceptable. Choosing Leo as his name is the biggest indicator of his values, IMO. The most recent Pope Leo was in the late 1800s and was the father of modern Catholic Social Teaching. Overall, I like this pick.

  5. Hey, it’s Jack White. Took my daughter for her first concert ever in Portland and it was the White Stripes 20 years ago and it’s one of the most memorable and amazing performances I’ve ever seen. It was positively operatic. I swear a guy with a guitar and a girl on a drum and you would’ve thought there were five people on stage.

  24. I didn't love the trade. I thought Kemp would be a perennial all-star. I was wrong, and I loved watching Chet all those years. Fwiw I also hated trading Leflore for Schatzeder. And who did they get for Jason Thompson? And even though it helped Detroit, Mickey Lolich should have been a Tiger for life

  28. To give you an idea of how bad the Rox offense is, they are 28th in MLB in OPS and 29th in runs per game, and they play half their games in an historically inflated run environment. But, also, they have played nine of their 19 road games so far in three of the top seven run-inflated ballparks this season (Rays, Phillies, and, believe it or not, Dodgers), plus four more at a run-neutral ballpark in SF. Only in Kansas City and San Diego have they played in the kind of depressed run environments they can point to and say, yeah, that's a big reason right there we haven't been scoring runs this season.

  33. To carryover the discussion from the MLB team on comparisons of this team vs the good teams we had last decade, this could be looked at as something chas has often talked about. Stars/Scrubs. Outside of Skubal I don't see this team as having many stars, if at all. But those other teams seemed to always have glaring holes. We'd get guys on then you see "Everett/Inge/Laird" coming up.... Looking at BR's page, of the 16 position players listed, 12 have an OPS+ of 99 or higher. Of those below that only Malloy has had significant playing time.
