  1. So much to take away from this morning's standings in Reference: Second best record in baseball Best pythag WL in baseball Positive record against all AL divisions Tied for best home record and solidly .500 on the road Underwater in extra innings and one-run games means they are even more dominant than we think Equally tough on righties and lefties Holding serve with good teams and beating up on teams they should be Super consistent winning records in the last 10, 20, and 30 games. I know, a lot can happen in the next 126 games. But so far, this is the team I have been waiting for all my life.

  3. One of the last home games of 1991 was heavily-attended as Cecil Fielder was on Home Run 49 and nobody had seen 50 in years. Ron Cameron asked me and my friends "Are you here just to see Cecil hit No. 50?" and I said "No, I'm here to see Chet hit No. 5". And Chet did just that. Loved him. Always seem to play with a big smile on his face. Didn't seem the least bit jaded. I know his last years were a terrible struggle and I am glad he's not struggling anymore. One of the most underrated Center Fielder's in MLB history, but not in these parts.

  4. Coincidentally, I’m graduating Saturday with my M.A. in Theological Studies from a Catholic college (Jesuit-oriented) at the University of British Columbia. My quick reaction. Most North American cradle Catholics will like this pick, many North American convert Catholics might not. Despite what you might see on social media, convert Catholics are a minority within the Church but are zealous and outspoken. Increasing in importance. Younger priests, like the pastor of my parish, also tend to be more conversativr, hence the re-introduction of things like a communion rail in some parishes. Going into the conclave, I saw him as one of the best candidates but thought his being American would rule him out. Fact he is so international though, even being a naturalized Peruvian after 20 years there, and is fluent in Italian and Spanish, made him acceptable. Choosing Leo as his name is the biggest indicator of his values, IMO. The most recent Pope Leo was in the late 1800s and was the father of modern Catholic Social Teaching. Overall, I like this pick.

  5. Hey, it’s Jack White. Took my daughter for her first concert ever in Portland and it was the White Stripes 20 years ago and it’s one of the most memorable and amazing performances I’ve ever seen. It was positively operatic. I swear a guy with a guitar and a girl on a drum and you would’ve thought there were five people on stage.

  20. 24 runs in Colorado in a 3 game series, so far, and 0 home runs. That is a really, really great sign. Being able to score without the benefit of any homers is terrific.

  23. I didn't love the trade. I thought Kemp would be a perennial all-star. I was wrong, and I loved watching Chet all those years. Fwiw I also hated trading Leflore for Schatzeder. And who did they get for Jason Thompson? And even though it helped Detroit, Mickey Lolich should have been a Tiger for life

  35. Wrigley Field is a great place to see a game though. We got there early when we went and checked out all the statues and other attractions. We had a blast. I'll be going back there, hopefully.

  37. Six hours before game time seems like an eternity. I’ve been up since 4 AM and already gone to my clinic for the blood draw for my yearly physical, walked 2 miles in the botanical garden in the foothills outside town, looked a magnificent coastal great horned owl in the eye, and eaten two meals. I’m primed for a game and watching other teams on MLB TV is a poor substitute for the Tigers. I’m really Jonesing now that I can watch games again.

  38. I didn't say it wasn't. I'm just pointing out that comparing 12 years to basically 1 and saying the 12 years was "more fun" because they had more success isn't valid. You can't use examples from 2006 and 2012 seasons and say "that team" because they're different teams and eras.
