Other administrations managed to do so without using the tactics the current one is using-heck, Obama was nicknamed the Deporter in Chief by immigrant advocates. Why can't this one? Seems to me that cruelty and fear is most, if not all, of the point. And many of them are being targeted AT the court, when they're going for their hearings.5 points

My point is that merely arbitrarily deporting people doesn't get you any closer to fixing the broken system. The country has a decision to make if it's going to maintain any moral consistency. We must either stop employers from hiring illegals (and bear the cost increases that will follow), which would pretty much end the influx of economic refugees (the vast majority) in about 10 minutes, or we legalize the people that are here and set up a system that gives enough people to keep agriculture or whatever else that need to keep going a way to come here and become citizens. Everything else is 🐮💩4 points

I look at the person, not their status. If an immigrant is working hard, contributing to society and not harming anyone, then I don't care how they got here. Undocumented status does not at all suggest to me that someone is a bad person or harmful to society. Most immigrants don't come here to start trouble or to take advantage of us. They come here because they left bad situations and want to make a better life for themselves and their families. Once they get that, they are not going to turn themselves in and be returned to hell. They are going to take a chance of not getting caught. I am pretty sure you would too. That is not to say I want "open borders". That would cause all kinds of logistics problems. What I would like to see is a better immigration system moving forward.4 points

QFT. The situation in American immigration has been created by American Business interests, just as the dissension over immigration in Germany was created by business interests there. We could have an orderly immigration and naturalization system but for the greed of American Business that doesn't want to pay the wages that people with rights would command. This truth cannot be shouted enough times from enough rooftops. It is, was, and continues to be a foundational lie of GOP politics.4 points

They're human beings, and still entitled to due process-mostly here to work, and make a better life. Some of them were 2-3 when they were brought here and don't even remember the countries of their birth. I work with a lot of people from Central America and they are good, hardworking people. I don't know under what circumstances they first came here (they're citizens now) and I don't care.4 points

The amount of WRONG-doing in this sentence is stunning. Where does the executive branch of the government get off thinking that THEY can INSTRUCT any person in the judiciary to do their bidding? Separation of powers is the absolute construct for a reason.3 points

Bill Burr opened his podcast on Thursday with a rant that even for him was harsh. Basically with all the **** going on in the country... why this? We're going after "little people". Laborers. The people who pick our food and build our stuff. Who are they hurting? Isn't there other problems that could be addressed? What happens now when all these people are gone? Nobody objects to going after criminals. I don't mean the "they are here illegally so they are by default criminal" people. Yes the gangsters and rapists, etc. But the guy who builds fences and puts on roofs and picks cucumbers and paves our roads? The lady working in a diner for 25 years? The kid graduating high school? It's not about fighting crime it's about being cruel to brown people.3 points

this is all correct, except, the Trump administration does object, as they tore up the Biden policy that ICE should prioritize for removal people who have committed felonies and violent crimes. so instead of making us safer by getting rid of criminals, Trump is getting rid of people who do the jobs no American wants. good article here by PP, explaining why TEXAS legislature refuses to make employers use the FREE E-Verify system to check the validity of I9 documents. Answer: employers have stopped it cold, as they do not want to lose a quarter of the employees in healthcare aides, construction, roofing, restaurants and agriculture. NO REPUBLICAN WANTS A FUNCTIONING IMMIGRATION SYSTEM, AND EVERY STORY THAT FAILS TO MENTION THAT LACKS THE NECESSARY CONTEXT. “If you got serious about applying [E-Verify], you would create even worse problems” with labor shortages, said Bill Hammond, a GOP former state lawmaker who once led the Texas Association of Business. “Do you want to go to a restaurant and use paper plates because no one will wash dishes?” https://www.propublica.org/article/texas-e-verify-requirements-immigration2 points

All of this to what end? What does any of this do to make people's lives materially better? It's not even about the bigger macro picture, even on the micro, individualistic level.... what does this do to make your life better? Burr's absolutely spot on in focusing on this... if we are electing politicians who aren't even going through the pretense of trying to make people's lives better, than what are we doing exactly? Is all this **** just gladiator games?2 points

Hilarious that the Tigers went 1-2 this weekend and still picked up a game since the 3 Amigos got swept. 😂2 points

If it’s only the pinky, I’ll take that as a win even if he has to miss a bit of time. By the way, here’s a funny thread about the repetitive Oppo Taco, Go Crazy, and Mike Piazza ads on the mlb.com audio app. Those of us who listen to games that way can relate1 point

In some cases, there are people who were brought here through no fault of their own, as unemancipated minors (ie. DACA kids). This administration treats these individuals just like everybody else, and on a moral level, it is just wrong. There's no sugar coating it. A person shouldn't be locked up and sent to El Salvador or Libya or wherever under any circumstances, but this is especially true of people who ended up here through no fault of their own. Seems like a pretty obvious point.1 point

Nah, running against old candidates in not running against old people. Even old people don't like old candidates - they know better than anyone that younger people are more up to the job.. She's working against a compromised jerk in Cuomo. I don't have any problem with that. AOC's problem isn't that she wants younger people in the party, its coming up with a politics that will do that - particularly for young men.1 point

Notice the friend suspects this was triggered by unemployment desperation - which is a symtom of a society with insufficient social support structures. Despite the prevalent American myth, the human organism is not constructed to thrive in a dog-eat-dog society. We evolved as a cooperative species, and when a society forgets that, or tries to, as ours has, you can expect the mental health of its members to suffer for it.1 point

context. The stands were not filled and the crowds did not match expectations. America knew this was a Trump birthday party and a show of force by the regime which appropriated US troops and cost $45m. Meanwhile, much more sizable crowds turned out to protest Trump in all 50 states.1 point

The timing of trading Devers is hilarious for Boston fans. They're having a great day after sweeping the Yankees and before they're done celebrating, Devers is gone for a sack of peanuts.1 point

Devers must be toxic as hell for the Sox to get rid of him for a bucket of prospects. For those that wonder why the Tiger's didn't try to trade probably a lot better package... he's sort of a jerk and no matter what his WAR and OPS+ is they don't want that on the team. Plus, the Giants are picking up the rest of his 313 million dollar contract.1 point

Nice tidbit about the Vander Meer anniversary, but it was the first night game at Ebbets Field, not Crosley (where the first ever ML night game had been played three years earlier). Talking about esoteric nerdy factoids…1 point

Removing Trump from it, it was just embarrassing how weak the US looked. Old creaky tanks and soldiers who were not trained well in marching. The US did not look like the most powerful military in the world. Trump completely humiliated them.1 point
