  1. Weather forecasts have become a LOT more accurate in the last decade or too. The kind of forecasting ability we had 20 years ago does not even compare to what we have today. I don't know how to convince the masses of that point.

  3. To maintain a 196 pound weight, and given that at my age I burn calories at a slower rate than 10 years ago even though I walk 2 miles a day, I have to stay at under 1700 cal daily. I was once able to exceed that mark frequently and not gain weight, but that is no longer the case. Banquet and celebration eating as a lifestyle is over for me. On the positive side, the mindfulness and sense of agency required to stick to this regimen is its own reward. At times I feel more comfortable inside my own skin than I ever have at any time previously.

  4. Trei Cruz may never get more than a cup of coffee in the majors but I would have put long odds on even that happening 18 months ago. If that were to happen that would mean that everybody but Daniel Cabrera made it to the majors out of that draft. Was of course the Covid draft but still 5 out of 6 picks would be pretty good.

  5. I had to make a run to the market up the street for dinner. I waited until McKinstry scored the tying run. When I got in my car the inning was already over, I heard Cleveland hit a lead off double, went into the store, came back out and heard Dan say "extra innings". Then as i pulled intio my driveway Sweeney hit the HR. A quick trip to pick up some steak bites made the day so much better.

  6. Underrated overrated, it doesn’t really matter because any analysis is just a point in time along the development curve, and no one really knows how much anyone is going to progress and develop and adapt. It’s just a guess, some more educated than others.

  8. You can even say Go Expos! The Quebec government just approved the use of "Go", although not without fierce debate. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/oqlf-go-habs-go-ok-1.7576171 Using 'go' to cheer on sports teams is now OK, says Quebec language watchdog Quebec's language watchdog has changed its tune on whether it's acceptable to use the word "go" to cheer on sports teams. In a new guideline posted in its online dictionary, the Office québécois de la langue française says that while "allez" is the preferred term, it's now "partially legitimized" to use the English word to show encouragement. The flip-flop comes after the office took a hard line with Montreal's transit agency, pressing it for months in 2024 to scrub the word "go" from the electronic signs on more than 1,000 city buses. The reversal followed a public outcry on the eve of the Montreal Canadiens' first playoff home game in April, when the Montreal Gazette reported how the transit agency had replaced "Go! Canadiens Go!" with "Allez! Canadiens Allez!" to stay on the watchdog's good side. The reversal followed a public outcry on the eve of the Montreal Canadiens' first playoff home game in April, when the Montreal Gazette reported how the transit agency had replaced "Go! A similar complaint in 2021 targeted the hashtag GoHabsGo that appears in oversized letters outside the Bell Centre in Montreal, the home arena of the Canadiens. The person who filed the complaint suggested that to comply with Quebec's language rules, the expression "Allez les Habitants allez" should appear alongside the English slogan, in larger letters. "And yes, I'm serious, if the law applies, then apply it!:)" the person wrote.

  9. Keith kinda quietly turning the corner offensively albeit without a ton of HR power. Coming into today OPS+ up to 111 and has an .860 OPS the past 30 days.

  14. I'm actually all for Elon doing this. Short term, I see it hurting republicans more, but I do think that depending on the issue, you could see both parties seeing and ultimately addressing concerns. Most people write off third parties, but generally the reason why they don't work is before they can get too big, one or both of the current major parties recognize a few good points from them and adopt them into their own fold. I don't have much hope for it, but it's not my money, so take a swing Elon.

  17. When I was recently pet sitting for two groups of family members who were out of town on vacation, I was yanked out of my usual circumstances and “gained” 10 pounds in two weeks. This was mostly due to bulk and water weight retention due to high sodium intakes and lots of sugar from which I had generally abstained. After going on a sugar fast and eating under 800 cal a day I got back to my normal set weight that I’ve been at for the last couple years. Now I’m slowly eating more every day, but being careful not to break the rules. 10 pounds is a big difference for me because I tire more quickly and feeling bloated is just a yucky feeling. My stomach now automatically winces at the thought of disturbing it with foods and drinks that were the problem. This is good.

  19. Without going into too much background, I have had to actively reduce the sodium in my diet. I'm kind of lucky much of my diet was lower in sodium anyway and I just had to cut out a few bad offenders, like salty snacks and Tasty Bite side dishes and cottage cheese (!). But then I found that one of the bigger challenges for me was getting enough calories. So often calories equals sodium, and at first I was bringing in around 1,500 calories a day before reaching my sodium budget, and I still work out a fair amount. Within three weeks I was down almost ten pounds, and not in a good way, necessarily. So I had to further reconfigure my diet to add calories without sodium. I tried trail mix at first, but that blew me through my fat budget. I finally came around to adding oatmeal and baked potatoes, both of which I like enough to eat basically every day. So I am close to on balance now. Thanks for asking. 😉

  21. Not necessarily. The US civil rights movement took great strength from their belief that a "Christian' nation had to be challenged to do better, and took hope in their interpretation of the Gospel that better lives and societies were possible. In my view, authentic Christianity is at heart a subversive ethic that adds to people's motivation to challenge the status quo for the sake of the future. The problem is that there isn't much authentic in US fundamentalist evangelicalism. The great fault line of religious belief is exactly when it's able to be twisted into another mean of control - of which one aspect is exactly inculcation of that sense of fatalism that pacifies the proles.

  23. I understand that people don't agree with this, but I do wish folks would stop referring to Trump as "stupid" or an "idiot" or things along those lines. That serves only to absolve him of responsibility for his actions and behavior, as though his intellectual capacity is not developed enough for him to understand what he is doing, and worse, that he is acting in good faith to improve life for the American people but simply isn't smart enough to figure out how to accomplish that. The evil in his actions is not the result of lack of intelligence—it's the result of something else. Trump is not a well-educated or thoughtful man, but he is smart enough to know exactly what he's doing and how to manipulate not only his base, but the entire system, to achieve his ends, which is to destroy the structure of American government on all levels and and strip it for parts on his way out. A completely stupid idiot could not accomplish what he has.

  24. Speaking of unrelated stats. I was browsing Baseball Reference and was curious to discover Oakland A's great Blue 'Moon' Odom had a higher WAR as a hitter ( 3.4 ) than pitcher ( 2.2 ). I knew he was a good hitting pitcher but thought he had a better pitching career... had some bad seasons I guess..

  27. It's just the double standard for me. Did the cuts have something to do with the tragedy? Maybe. There is certainly a connection to be made between the cuts and NWS failing spectacularly. That said, meteorology has been a speculative science for its entire existence. I don't think it's dispositive at all to say that sans the cuts, they get this right far enough in advance to save all those lives. The thing is though, if the shoe were on the other foot, and Biden or Harris were in office, even without the cuts this would have been falling squarely at their feet. Trump is held to a different standard because he's a dangerous idiot with a cult backing.

  31. I ran into this conversation shortly after the Minnesota shootings with a family member... Made a comment about how it might have been a left winger, and had to correct the comment. While they acknowledged they may have been wrong, when I commented about the fact that these guys lie through their teeth, lie as they breathe and that you cannot trust them (ie. GOP politicians, right wing radio), it ended up in some combination of "well, both sides are the same" and "nothing I can do, it's all in Jesus' hands" To be clear, I am a Catholic who, while not attending as much as I should, tries my best to adhere to the faith. If anything I have moved back toward the church over the past year. But I have a wife and two kids and want more than anything else to hand them over a better situation than the one I had when I was a kid. I feel like I do my best within the things that I can control, but I see that sort of nihilism and it enrages me. It's selfish, and when you read Matthew in particular, you begin to wonder what these guys think Jesus would think of their nihilism.

  34. This from our friend, AI. During their time playing at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, the team will simply be known as the Athletics or the A's, with the approved designation for official references being "ATH". The A's vice chairman, Sandy Dean, explained that this decision was made out of respect, recognizing the temporary nature of their presence in Sacramento. The team's brand guidelines specify that the city name will not be used on the front of team jerseys. While some Sacramento residents may find the decision not to incorporate the city name into the team's branding disrespectful, the intention is to avoid establishing a strong connection to Sacramento that would be severed upon the team's eventual move to Las Vegas. *********** The most encouraging takeaway from the link Bert provided is that there is a growing realization that Las Vegas may not be happening. I agree with all A’s fans, SELL THE TEAM!!!

  36. My maternal grandmother was a knitting and crocheting queen. My two sister and I had ponchos in multiple colors and patterns, and there were blankets galore in those late 60’s- 70’s popular colors- brown, orange, burgundy, cream, that Pukey green, yellow. We never got those variations of pretty blue color ponchos. My cousins got those. I think we were told they got the blue colors and we got the other is because they had blue eyes and we all had brown eyes. ….. so, “ don’t it make my brown eyes blue”. (Crystal Gayle) 🫤
