That's the dirty little secret about capitalism - the more money you have, the easier it is to make more. You actually have to be aggressively foolish to lose a fortune under any conditions less than an general economic collapse like 1929. That's why long term successful capitalist societies must have a lot of progressive taxation and spending on public goods and social capital (health and education etc) - otherwise the trend into oligarchy/banana republicism is a built in inevitability.3 points

I think you have to trade him before training camp if he doesn't sign before then, because A) you risk him getting injured before the deadline, and B) you have a larger pool of suiters in the off season. The longer you wait, the less you're likely to receive in return for him.3 points

You were not in the room or on the phone calls or privy to any of the negotiations. You fail to grasp that moves in baseball require the consent of two parties to agree. This isn’t a video game. “He didn’t do what I imagined in my head he could do” is not a valid criticism3 points

and the inverse to this is that duty always ends up falling to Seider, which he is certainly good at, but it's also a waste of his other skills to have him playing a stationary game at the goal front so much.2 points

They also need to make the audio between NY command center and field officials available after the fact. If they want to put to bed any notion that they might be in cahoots with the bookies who are now their biggest sponsors.2 points

As always, it is disappointing when the refs pull points off of the board. It would have been a different game had they not. Also, ASB catches that pass 999 times out of 1000. It is a different game if he catches it. Apart from that, it seems like the front seven was a lot less aggressive tonight than they were against the Ravens. Was that by choice given the depleted secondary, or was it that they just did not have time to get home? Probably a bit of both. Hopefully Alim is back for TB to juice the pass rush. Then we can get healthy over the bye.2 points

You have to hang onto him because you just made the playoffs and are in position to contend next year. Trading Skubal right now would be lunacy. If he gets hurt, you can sign him at a discount.2 points

I had a 6th row seat to that entire nonsense. Ref and sideline official came together, discussed for 30 seconds, separated. Come back together at the spot of the ball for the XP. Ref nods, then pulls a flag. That call coming from upstairs is a blatant violation of NFL rules.2 points

I truly don’t understand where this narrative came from about Scott Harris being “afraid”. Especially when you consider he’s been in charge for only 3 seasons and they made the playoffs in 2 of them. It’s an urban legend with no basis in reality.2 points

Yeah I often watch less after the Tigers are eliminated but find myself interested in this series because: a) while the Tigers' loss was heartbreaking it didn't feel unjust for an 87-win team that had blown the division lead, so I don't feel they got robbed or anything; b) Seattle is somewhat of a sister city of Vancouver, we go there a lot, I enjoy myself there and was treated well by the fans last week; c) Seattle's drought of never having made the World Series has gone on too long; and d) I can't cheer for a Toronto team, their fans just yap and yap and yap in the offseason.1 point

I talk about it above, but I come at it from the perspective of having seen them live discussing it for 30 seconds, come to an agreement, separate, then come back together a second time and throw the flag. If they had thrown the flag the first time they talked I would have been suspicious. But to do it in the second huddle, I have no doubt it came from elsewhere. FWIW, Campbell agrees.1 point

I feel like Branch's actions have allowed Hutch's foolish late hit to fly under the post-game radar, which it shouldn't. KC would've had 3rd and long on their own side of the field, and Hutch gave them 15 yards, a fresh set of downs and momentum that they didn't earn. The drive ended in a TD. He's not taking nearly the amount of heat that he deserves, IMO.1 point

All this talk about how Chiarot would be better suited for the third pairing is missing the point. Of course he would be, but when he was hired there was nobody else suited to play on the first pairing. Chiarot has done exactly what he was hired to do, which is to eat up minutes for four years until the franchise had credible prospects to replace him on the blue line. Even now, leaving aside Edvinsson and ASP who promise to be a formidable second pairing, there is nobody who is clearly head and shoulders above Chiarot. Anyway, his contract is up after this season so the search for a successor is on, whether it is a prospect or a new free agent.1 point

In the late 19th century my ancestors came from Poland, where vowels are at a premium. Decided to Anglicize our original surname and I guess one of them had the bright idea of putting in three consecutive vowels. Which means the last name is now frequently mispronounced and/or people try to replace the middle vowel with a consonant.1 point

The corruption has been really out in the open since Trump got his get out of jail free card. Imagine what is going on behind the scenes. Did Trump make peace? No. Qatar made peace by making peace more valuable than war. How? By bribing Trump into selling out Americans. It's never about peace and war with the far right. It's always about money and power.1 point

I guess you mean that with regards to Chiarot? This is what I see with Chiarot as a 1st pair D with Mo Seider: His 1st year here those two were paired up. 2022-23. Chiarot ended up with a -31 +/-. IIRC, Seider had a -20 or -25 plus-minus when he was paired up with Chiarot, until Walman supplanted Chiarot as the 1st pair LHD with Seider. Seider ended up at -9, so -20 or 25 with Chiarot, plus 15-ish or so with Walman. Walman ended up a +10. In 2023-24, Walman and Seider were paired. Walman ended up a -2 so no great earth shakes there... and Seider ended up a -7. Again, nothing great. Chiarot ended up a -4 as 2nd pair that year, instead of the -31 he had the prior year as mostly the 1st pair LHD with Mo. In 2024-25 Walman left and Chiarot was again 1st pair LHD with Mo... Chiarot -14, Mo -5. In two games this year so far, Mo and Chiarot are both -3. I'm sorry... but I don't even mind Ben Chiarot. I love his hits and toughness on the ice. Just not as 1st pair. I think as a 1st pair LHD he is not only too old and too slow and an overall negative on the ice, but more importantly, I think he DRAGS Mo seider DOWN with him. I like ben Chiarot. I just like him as 3rd pair LHD, and NOT 1st pair LHD... is all. I'm sticking to my guns. Heck, I'll take AJ as 1st pair LHD over Ben any day. Starting today... if I could just write up the lineup myself...1 point

DETROIT -- The Tigers have extended the contract of manager A.J. Hinch, president of baseball operations Scott Harris confirmed Monday at their season-ending press conference. Terms were not disclosed. “We extended A.J. earlier in the year,” Harris said. “I absolutely love working with A.J. I think he’s one of the best managers in the game. We have now proactively extended him twice because we want him to be here as long as he’s willing to be here, and I want to work with him as long as I can possibly work with him. It was one of the easier conversations I’ve had, because … he wants to be here too, and I think we’re both bullish on our future in this organization, and we’re both proud of what we’ve done in the three years together.” per mlb.com1 point

Why do we have rules if we aren’t going to follow them? NFL Rule 15-4(g) clearly states: “any aspect of a play not listed as reviewable in Section 3 of this Rule” is unreviewable. Nothing about motions, formations, or getting set is anywhere in Section 3. If it were, half the tush pushes could come back for the false start. Juwaan Taylor would get called for being in the backfield a lot more too. A parallel would be the Seahawks-Lions game from a decade ago with the batting out of the end zone. The official staring right at it inexplicably called it nothing. That’s not reviewable. They shouldn’t be calling down on that either. No matter the intentions and trying to get some obscure penalty right, the on-field officials should be absolutely constrained by the four corners of the rule book. That should be their Bible. That is how you keep everyone on a level playing field. They didn’t do that yesterday. To circumvent the rule, they just lied to us and claimed it was decided on the field when it so clearly wasn’t. Because it’s not like the NFL would ever release the audio from their communications! To me, that shows a complete lack of integrity that’s far worse than any missed call.1 point

Baseball has definitely developed problems with the lack of balance between markets. The NFL may hate the Lions and love the Chiefs but they all get the same salary levels.1 point

Another thing to consider is there could be a work stoppage in 2027. If your Boras and Skubal, maybe taking a contract this offseason wouldn't be the worst idea1 point

I don't think this is necessarily true. Austin Jackson was 5 WAR player for the Tigers in 2010, he probably wasn't going to play for the 96 win Yankee team that year. As always, it's a matter of choosing wisely! the same might be true for Aiden Miller since the Phillies have Trea Turner in place. While I agree that competitive playoff teams are least likely to want to part with current productive players, they are also the most likely to have blocked MLB ready players.1 point

Nothing is ever 100%, but I think If they trade Skubal, it is most likely going to be for prospects rather than players that will help in 2026. That is why trading Skubal would probably remove them from contention in 2026. Any team that would trade for one year of Skubal is going to be all in to win in 2026 and probably isn't going to give up players who will help the Tigers next year.1 point

I'm just going to throw this question out there. If the Ravens were to fire John Harbaugh, would you want him at Michigan to replace Sherrone if John was willing to come coach college football?1 point

I don’t know. It will come down to how strong the deals they get offered this Winter. This front office has shown they are very committed to building an organization that can consistently win year in and year out. Passing up a move that could have a major impact for many years in order to make a run for one season doesnt seem like Harris MO.1 point

Looking at the Corbin Burnes trade with one year remaining I’m not sure you get anywhere near that return unless Skubal is willing to sign an extension. I don’t think he and his agent will allow for that and want to go thru free agency.1 point

At one point on Friday's broadcast, I heard a reference to Game 7 of the 1924 World Series. It was a rare postseason all-or-nothing game that went to extra innings. It's a game and series that doesn't quite get the attention it deserves. Here's a fun 13 minute video about it. The series was between the NY Giants and the Washington Senators. The Senators, a charter 1901 American League franchise, won their first ever pennant that season. The legendary Walter Johnson joined them in 2007, played his whole career for them, and finally in his 18th season at the age of 36 had a chance to play in the World Series. Unfortunately for those interested in storybook endings, it looked that Johnson had missed his moments, losing his two starts in Games 1 and 5. In Game 7, the Senators were trailing 3-1 in the 8th inning and Johnson was sitting on the bench. Rather than spoil it for those who don't already know what happened 101 years ago, I suggest you go to the 6:23 mark of the video and see how the deciding game played out. Enjoy actual game footage that was found in an attic in 2014.1 point

Watching Skubal mow down the Mariners while his pitch count climbed really detracted from my enjoyment of the moment, to be honest. I knew he'd be out by the 5th or 6th inning and had little confidence the bullpen could record 9-12 outs without yielding a run or more. I'm not arguing that Hinch should have allowed Skubal to rack up 125 pitches, like the good ole days, but the sense of foreboding kind of stunk. Aces being pulled after 100 pitches really is one of the bummers of following the modern game.1 point
