This all seems pretty strategic. You get 8 dem senators who are retiring and/or not up for re-election end the shutdown, you let the rest of the caucus attack them, then you drop these Epstein emails to focus attention back on Dirty Don.2 points

What I like about this thread is, despite what we may bitch about day to day during the season... it was much much worse. We evolved to first world problems.2 points

ID's are not as hard to get as the left likes to pretend. Many cities and states already have programs to help get ID's and those certainly could be expanded. Additionally, getting ID's into the hands of every eligible voter, would disproportionately improve the lives of people of color by improving their ability to get a job, get a bank account, give more access to social programs, and even improve the justice system as it would put more people of color on juries. Getting everyone an ID should be a goal if you truly want to help people.2 points

And they will never, ever, ever stop supporting him because at this point, their only objective is for you to never be able to hang "I told you so" over their heads. They will support the abject destruction of America and even themselves just to avoid ever admitting to you, me, and people like us that they could ever have been wrong.2 points

I love this post except for the final sentence. Harris has not yet been able to establish the limits he will go to in the free agent market to bring top talent aboard. Sure, he didn’t get Soto or Ohtani. But remember, Detroit has never been a top destination for those guys during his tenure. He’s still working on building us up to being at that level, as much as he can. The time has not been right, either in the team he could field around a top tier guy, or in the perception among top tier guys of Detroit as a real destination. I think we’re closer than ever, and maybe Harris makes the move this winter that gets us firmly into that conversation. But we just haven’t been that yet.2 points

Bump; Commentator; Mr. President...tell us the story about how the other NFL owners voted to not allow you to buy a team. And then: Commentator; Now Mr. Presidrnt...tell us how you destroyed the USFL by changing their schedule to go up against the NFL. How did that work out for you? Another failed business attempt? Have you actually had any successful business ventures, not including the grift of selling terrible products to your sucker base?2 points

The auto industry and its feeder industries went through a bit of a downsizing in the late 80s, early 90s. there went your tax base. remember when Suh left the Lions for the dolphins? 4.5% tax versus 0% tax is a big deal when youre making that kind of money. And youre a hockey fan, how many times in the last few years have you heard teams complain about losing free agents to low tax environments like florida or texas or vegas? tons. Detroit is not NY, Chicago, or LA where the cultural amenities, nightlife, and business opportunities outweigh tax considerations. Marginal things like taxes will hurt a destination like detroit. look, its not like detroit cant get free agents, it just has to overpay to get them or offer a championship window. Or both.1 point

Looking ahead a bit I expect they give some guys like Decker the week off against the Giants. Short week after that with a huge game against the Packers on Thursday. And they shouldn’t need a full effort to beat the interim coached G-men1 point

What I see more often is people explaining why Harris or Ilitch won't like any player and how no player will want to play for the Tigers so it doen't matter anyway.1 point

as noted, FLA and Tx among MLB states have no IT. So that's an edge for them, but among the rest that do, MI at a flat 4.25% is one of the better ones for high earners. Funny thing is that business taxes in MI used to be higher than a lot places, and when the GOP was in power in the ~90s or so a lot of taxes got cut. Of course, I'm also old enough to remember when we had good schools and good roads in MI. We have neither now. I'm just guessing there might be a connection.1 point

I'll predict he is not even considering Detroit as a destination.1 point

its going to hard for future historians to understand how the POTUS was a convicted felon, a pedophile, and a grifter - who held absolute dominion over 1/3 of the country, most of whom he despised.1 point

Thats a lot of word salad to fail to deny supporting the GOP Pedophile Protection Program.1 point

Unless they already play in Florida or AZ or even CA, I suspect most players 'commute' so the city itself is kind of irrelevant. Especially those that command the types of salaries a FA would get. I don't think a city, during the season, matters to them. They are always working anyway.1 point

I have two career (20yr+) vets in the immediate fam - one USN, one USAF. One is pretty conservative by ordinary stds. Another BIL did 6 in the Marines. They all hate Trump.1 point

It basically says the Granderson trade made sense at the time based on where the team was at. And it says the Scherzer non trade, even though we knew he wasn't going to resign, made sense based on where the team was at. IMO, it is confirming what you and those of us who think it would be foolish to trade Skubal now believe with the team coming off 2 post season appearances and being favorites to make it to the postseason again. Also, an article in the Athletic from the GM meetings also implies that Tiger Brass is saying they want to win with Skubal.1 point

It’s not that simple though. In a vacuum, or on a college football Saturday, sure, the State Supreme Court and many state court judges may hate Brian Kelly and love LSU football. But their job isn’t to decide who they like or hate, or even to say what’s “fair” or not. Their job is to enforce the law, which oftentimes is the black and white contract in front of them. If there is some close call that’s not obvious here, maybe those biases will work against Kelly. But I find it hard to believe that judges who have worked for decades to get to where they are would just throw it all away to give LSU a pass on this. In any event, to play it to its natural conclusion, what would be the legal outcome? That buyouts are unenforceable against a public institution in the State of Louisiana? That performing poorly on a football field provides “cause” for firing? Why would any college football coach worth his salt touch that job with a ten foot pole after that ruling? LSU goes through head coaches like a fat kid going through a box of Twinkies. If you’re not guaranteed a pay day when you lose three games and they tire of you in a year, the Sun Belt has opportunities with much more security where it’s much easier to win.1 point

Put me down as believing, deep down, that they know it's bad. But the thing is that it's not over either.... more will end up coming out. And even any move that he could make to silence or cover it up (such as commuting or pardoning Maxwell) will end up having a Streisand effect anyway. It will not end the questions or the issue. This is a pretty good offramp, but suspect that for as bad many of the diehards deep down know it is, they'll blow right past the exit as they always do.1 point

I don't know how this works for MAGA delusionalists. But know that people in the W. Bush sphere knew that they had f;d up Iraq even while they did all the things to try to fix it. They knew it was bad. Just like Biden's people knew he was past his prime and needed to step aside even while the Biden family fought that tooth and nail. So, these people defending this here are well aware that they are defending a pedo criminal. They know.1 point

No, thank you. I like Tucker, maybe, for 7-or-8/sub-300 with team options, but definitely not 10+/400+ with player options. Too injured too recently for Sotobucks and Sotoyears.1 point

I don’t think Bregman would want to have to hit in Comerica Park 81 games a year for the rest of his life. His career slash line here is .242/.309/.475, which runs 17% below his career average. If he has designs to get into the Hall of Fame—and I don’t see why he wouldn’t—he’ll probably want better back nine stats than that.1 point

Goff: He needs a good team around him and McVay to be successful. That’s why we need Stafford. Stafford was 0-3 in the playoffs in 12 years. That’s because he didn’t have a good team around him and a coach like McVay. Hall of fame.1 point

You really need to stop making so much sense. I guess Houston is a winner. Anaheim is bad because or Moreno as you have so eloquently stated. But it should be and easily could be a big draw. I be every PBO drools at the chance once Arniw sells. But we are Detroit so let's hope we get the player to come. It just feels like Bregman will sign here. Not sure how I feel about that but he does fit many needs on the field and off. We probably overpay a bit and sign him and keeping Skubal might be part of his request.1 point

Let’s not forget that Skubal pitched 6 innings in Game 5. Then sat home and watched Yamamoto pitch in two consecutive WS games so his team could win the series. When Tarik can go 7 innings in an elimination game, I’ll take his desires a bit more seriously.1 point

That was an open-hand slap after being shoved by Payne. If you wanna flag him for that, cool, but trying to act like it was a "punch" is dumb, and trying to equate it to the actual haymaker Payne threw is 200-proof cope.1 point

I look at it this way. I was a left handed batter. If I had to face Skubal I would just tell the manager to pencil me in for a day off, because that's what I would be doing if I had to bat.1 point

Driving pet peeves are old, I know. Coming back home thru the middle of OH where 75 is two lanes, circumstances took place that ended up with two trucks side by side. I’m in the left lane. I can see the truck in front of me is going slightly slower than the other so I start to slow down a bit so that he can see what I’m doing, giving him the space and ability to eventually get over and behind the other truck that’s going just a tad faster. Did the car behind me realize that? Nope. He just speeds up on the tail of the truck in the right lane now parallel to me wondering where he’s going to go. Jesus. Just wait about 30 seconds and we can punch out of there and leave.1 point

Man you are amazing!!!! how did you find those videos of Sanchez and Logan?!?! To scrub out the exact spots. So cool to see full 2004-2005 games as well. I know the Tigers didn't win a lot in those days but those are very nostalgic years for me. Man I still can't believe you found those. How did you come up with those videos????1 point

Nook Logan's entire amazing career was like a dream. There is no way to sufficiently replicate his existence on a video. Was he even real or was it just something we imagined?1 point
