I am curious how many fans who followed the Tigers from 2017 to 2023, and watched Miggy become a below average player on an unmovable contract, would actually want the Tigers to sign Skubal to a 10 year deal. A lot of media folks are still tossing around the 10 year $400M number. I would think a 10 year contract for a 30 year old pitcher would be a stretch for almost any team and a definite no for the Tigers.6 points

I think the short contracts are good for the game. It gives a smaller market team a chance to go all in wuithout getting stuck with a contract for 10 years. Like the Tigers and Valdez.4 points

I do not want the Tigers to sign Skubal to a 10/400 deal. It is likely the last few years could be ugly, perhaps very ugly, and the Tigers cannot risk having 40M+ in dead money on their books. That is a risk the bigger markets can take. 5 x 50 does not get it done, but I would try, and then watch him walk.3 points

The Miggy contract was painful because of his decline and the negative impact on the team. Skubal is in his prime. There is not a Skubal trade that will make the Tigers better in 2026. The Tigers are in a position to win now. The Angels with Ohtani were in the midst of a long string of losing seasons. Huge return for one year of Skubal is a theory not based on precedent.3 points

Typical reaction by cowards. They start a fight and cry like a bitch when you hit back. Just like the “tread on me” crowd.3 points

I would be willing to trade Skubal for a kings ransom. Unfortunately, that is not an option. Look at the Burnes trade for the Brewers, the best player they got was Joey Ortiz, who was the 45h ranked prospect on fangraphs, and he is projected as a 2 WAR player entering his age 27 season. He's a solid player, but he is not an impact player, and not a player that meaningfully changes the outlook of your franchise over a 3-5 year period. If you have a good scouting and development organization, and don't have an incredibly cheap and deadbeat ownership, you will have no problem consistently acquiring/developing solid 2 WAR guys, missing out on a guy like that will never be what holds your team back. I checked the fangraphs top 20 prospects from 2014-2019. In that period 87 different players appeared on the lists. Of those, only 20 players had 3 or more 3+ WAR seasons during the 6 years of control. So less than 25% of top 20 prospects actually turned into consistent impact players. And the fact is you would be lucky to get a single top 20 prospect for Skubal, in all likelihood the best you'd get is two top 100 prospects, one of them probably around 50th and the second more of a back half guy. And guess what? Both of those guys are unlikely to turn out to be even average big league starters. The reality is that the Tigers would not receive a package for Skubal that will have any meaningful impact on the teams outlook for the next 6 seasons. If the Tigers trade Skubal and get one player who gives them 12 WAR over their 6 years of control, that would be an objectively successful return. Sorry, but that level of player is not hard to come by, and that is not an exciting return. I'd rather give it one more shot with Skubal, the franchises outlook over the next 6 years after this one will not change whether they trade Skubal or not.2 points

Also, I don't think Bichette or Bregman wanted to come here. And none of us wanted Suarez to come here. Although I do think if we had gotten Valdez sooner, then guys like Bichette and Bregman would have taken us more seriously as an option.2 points

Skenes was paid 875K for his 6.5 WAR last year; the Pirates got a superstar performance for peanuts, and then re-allocated the money they would have had to pay a superstar pitcher right into the pockets of the owner, trotting out a bottom 5 payroll. Clearly the only solution to this problem is to limit the earning power of players, so billionaire owners can make higher profits.2 points

I truely believe he has no intellect. He does have a certain kind of smarts which allows him to manipulate people to no end, but his intellect (ability to use logic and analyze complex things) is pretty much nonexistent. Some people still think he's just pretending to be dumb and just messing with us, but I think what you see is what he is. That is what might save us, although we won't necessarily be safe from his handlers.1 point

He's got the intellect of one. So yes, Trump is the 7 year old. The difference is, most 7 year olds I've known aren't racist and even if they were racially influenced by bigoted people in their lives, could still be given the opportunity to learn, grow, and change. But most 7 year olds didn't refuse to rent houses to blacks, want to see innocent persons of color put to death, or pull black dealers off the casino floor to satisfy racist white patrons. If a 7 year old opens a lemonade stand and refuses to sell lemonade to black customers then maybe we can talk and use that as a teachable moment about equality and racism.1 point

Who says the Tigers didn’t offer him a contract? Based on everything I have read, they did and he declined it. Also, based on the salary committed to Valdez, it would be very hard to believe that the Tigers offered anything less to Skubal, and they almost certainly offered him something more. But Boras seems to have pegged Skubal’s value around 10/$400 million, which is a long way from the neighborhood that Detroit was probably playing in. If 10/$400 million is the price, I don’t want Detroit to pay it, especially having witnessed the last few years of Cabrera’s contract.1 point

Bottom line, this trade wasn't about Huerter. It was about moving Jaden Ivey. He clearly wasn't happy, he never improved in the areas that matter (defense, finishing, turnovers), there was no room for him to develop here, they weren't going to give him the money he wanted this offseason, and he had a 30M dollar cap hold that would have hurt the team's flexibility in the offseason. There was obviously no trade market for him, so they go what they could get before this stretched into the offseason. That said, Huerter is a better player than Jaden Ivey. It's marginal, but he is. Better finisher inside the arc, better career 3pt shooter, better playmaker, and a better defender. He's also an expiring contract, which is better for the team this offseason. They also have the potential to move from 29 to 22 in a good draft. That's actually a significant jump whether you're drafting cheap talent or using the pick as an asset in a trade. I'm disappointed they didn't trade him sooner to get more out of it, but let's be realistic. Jaden's injuries complicated the trade situation big time and every team in the league was seeing the same thing we were seeing every time Jaden stepped on the court.1 point

The Pirates are one of the most profitable mlb franchises. Their owner doesn't care about the trash product he puts out on the field. He was fortunate to draft one of the premier players that people want to watch. And has another one in Griffin.1 point
-
It could get very bizarre. You are going to have the rich teams in strange alliance with the players against the rest of the teams. And in the end the larger numbers of poorer owners may not be able to hold out because they can probably least afford a year without revenue. I suppose that will be the ultimate tell as to whether those teams are losing money or not. They'll be a lot more willing to take the shutdown if they weren't making any money anyway.1 point

your arg is unserious. Dems moved toward reform in multiple jurisdictions, GOP moved toward abuse, Dems forced to react. There is no ethical culpability on the part of the left for playing self defense nor even a fundamental change in the preferences of the left to do away with all of it.1 point

More on the Mick. This caught my eye. Not that I'm a birds fan, but Jim Palmer was a childhood idol. As were their pitching staff in what, the early 70s when the had 4 twenty game winners. Impressive rather you like it or not. I'll save you hitting a link, I took a screenshot. The game was much different back then, and played a different way. Mick was a beast. If he was his 68 best, I would sign him tomorrow. Yea, I'm old and nuts. 🙂 I would add Kenny Rogers. He was a master of his craft.1 point

I was mostly ambivalent over the arbitration dispute, but I do wonder what its effects on the grander scheme of the CBA will be. I don't see how we don't lose at least one season of baseball at the rate we are going. The infighting amongst owners will need to be settled before a new deal can even be negotiated. The Walter (LAD), Cohen (NYM), & Steinbrenner (NYY) coalition are probably pretty okay with the status quo. The Nutting (PIT), Castellini (CIN), and Monfort (COL) groups are going to be out for blood. And then a ton (including Ilitch) land somewhere in the middle, who won't want a season of lost revenue but also recognize the need for reform. Amongst the owners, the conversation probably starts with revenue sharing, which is a hot mess right now. You've got the New York, LA, and Chicago media markets that are doing just fine. And then Milwaukee, Tampa, and Cincinnati are making a tenth of that money, while many local TV deals are going sideways. All the while, the Dodgers benefit from a Chicago Parking Meter like deal with MLB. Revenue sharing is at 48% right now... where do you go from there? Beyond revenue sharing, when push comes to shove at the table between owners and MLBPA, what are the owners even going to fight for? Presumably a salary cap, which if they are serious about, will probably cause an NHL 2004-2005 lockout in and of itself. Of course, that should probably be accompanied with a salary floor that will ruffle the feathers of the cheaper owners (see revenue sharing above). Now after Skubal, a lot of owners will want to see arbitration get an overhaul too. Will the entire rookie ball system of control need to get one too if high profile players aren't guaranteed a payday in year 7/8? Everything is a mess. It feels like by March 2027, there is a chance they'll have only torn down, and anything and everything will be on the table and up for grabs. Speaking of the NHL, it is the most comparable professional sports league in terms of revenue/game (obviously only because MLB has nearly double the games). Yet, the highest paid player AAV in the entire NHL ($14MM) would be outside the top 90 highest players in MLB. Now, should the owners go to the table and say "we want to be more like the NHL"? Obviously not. But, I do think they have a point that higher profile players in their league are paid significantly more commensurately than the other professional leagues. It's all just messy and I don't see any easy path forward for anybody.1 point
