That’s right: Goff is ahead of Allen in nearly every major passing total and rate stat, and the Detroit Lions are ahead of the Bills in nearly every offensive and overall total and rate stat (including overall strength metrics like DVOA, nflelo, and Pro-Football-Reference SRS, not to mention win-loss record). With not quite two weeks until the Bills come to Detroit to potentially settle the matter head-to-head, Goff’s simply outproducing Allen. But the “Most Valuable Player” award has always implied more than just declaring that whoever has the best stats, or whoever is the quarterback of the best team, the player of the year. There’s the idea of value: the player does more for his team than any other.

Not to disparage Goff but did you see the conditions Allen played in the other night? Goff has been in perfect climate-controlled conditions every game this season but one. Again, Goff has delivered, but I’m glad Ford Field has a dome. And Allen seems tailor-made for Buffalo.

And Allen only attempted 17 passes.

If we're talking purely passer-to-passer comparison, then the stats certain point in Goff's favor. If we're talking MVP then it's fair to also mention that Allen has 334 rushing yards this season including 6 TDs compared to Goff's 40 and 0 TDs.

Interestingly they are exactly tied on receiving: 1 reception each for 7 yards and 1 TD.

Good find on the receiving stat.

Again, I don’t disparage either player. They both deserve to be considered in the MVP race, as does Lamar (though his last game and the team’s overall record diminishes his chances). The MVP may hinge on the Detroit-Buffalo game. Assuming Goff and Allen continue to perform as they have been, lot of voters splitting hairs between them will look at how they performed head to head.

No way Goff wins it even if he has all the superior numbers and beats Allen. I heard Goff described as all steak and no sizzle and that fits him perfectly. Goff also has the label of being a system QB. Even after he was asked to prove it without McVay and proved it, it's just moved on to Ben Johnson. He still can't shake the under pressure narrative even though he has been one of the best QBs in the league under pressure.

I agree. At least in perception, people will say it’s all Ben Johnson, or that any QB could do what he did.

Goff is the type of guy to win Super Bowl MVP though.

Well, up until last Sunday Lamar was the front runner. And he deserved to be. I don’t think he is anymore. Too many downs where he looked like he didn’t know whether he should stay a passer or become a runner. Then Josh Allen had the dramatic prime time game in the snow. Goff’s Thanksgiving game was fine but the story was the failed comeback rather than any heroics by Goff.

It is true that the media has given Allen more hype than he has been to in his career and has not given golf as much credit as he has been to. But there is still a lot of football left to be played.

also, this is a big if, but if Goff averages 21 for 25 in each of his last five games, that would put him past Drew Brees for the highest completion percentage in a season in NFL history at just over 75%. It would be hard to deny him the MVP if he set that record, but with the tough slate of games coming up, that seems a lot less likely than it did a few weeks ago.

Does he have to clear waivers before becoming a FA? Or if some team claims him, they have to honor his contract?

He would have to clear waivers. The team that claims him would need to add him to their 53 man roster and take over the contract. It's unlikely Reynolds will be claimed, so he would be free to sign where he wants.

If the Lions win the toss tomorrow, I'm hoping they receive for a change. a) it will make TP's head explode, which could be fun to witness; and b) I think Goff would lead them on a TD drive and the Lions would be playing from ahead wire to wire, instead of Love making an immediate statement against the Lions defense to start the game.

Most teams want as many possessions as possible. Deferring it in the hopes of getting it last in the 2nd quarter, with enough time, never made much sense. I could see it if a team has a totally dominant defense but even then, it's a questionable decision.

Packers have injuries too.

Injuries in their secondary against a team with as many offensive weapons as the Lions have isn't a good sign for Green Bay. But it's a great sign for the Lions. And don't forget, Green Bay sucks...😅😅

Their corners are rather pedestrian without Alexander. Their safties are pretty good though.

Not sure if its been mentioned or not but just a heads up if you're in the Detroit area the game will be shown live on Fox 2 so if you don't have a Prime account don't worry about signing up for one just to watch the game.
