What if Jared Goff got hurt in training camp..............and Aaron Rodgers was still out there? That would be horrifying to me.  

I honestly have a very hard time seeing the Lions signing Rodgers. I think they'd avoided plenty of talented players because of culture fit questions, and Rodgers isn't the QB he used to be. The dude is 41 now and I know QBs can usually play longer than other positions, but still 41 is old. 

So you have a guy who's talent level is declining and who's about as far from a culture fit as I think you can get outside of criminal activity... I don't see it.

I've heard a lot of ex players, in every sport, say that knowing when to retire was their hardest decision. Their minds don't realize how much they've lost at an older age. Rodgers still had decent moments last season but his age really showed. I bet a team will sign him with the hopes that he has a little bit left. Even just to hold a clipboard and possibly be there in case of an injury.

Any team that gets him will almost have to start him to avoid disruption.

I really don't see where he's a fit. Insurance in case of injury would be my only idea. Maybe a QB will go down in training camp, it's my only guess. Like you say, he would be a total distraction.

Seems like the Steelers are handing things to him on a silver platter and he's toying with them.

I haven't seen a ton of stress, but I agree it's a great team. To the extent there is stress it might just be anxiety at the notion of "standing pat" this offseason. They replaced Carlton Davis with DJ Reed, Kevin Zeitler with a rookie (or Mahagony), and didn't (or haven't) really addressed the relative weakness at edge across from Hutchinson. They should be just as good as they were week one last season, but they aren't really much better. Granted of course that it is nearly impossible to improve on a 15-3 roster.

If 2025-2026 turns out how 2024-2025 did -- injury after devastating injury debilitating the team into a disappointing playoff exit -- it will ultimately be an equally disappointing finish. If they stay even relatively healthy though, there is no limit to how far this team can go.

I'm excited to see what this team can do. I am very doubtful they will match their 15-2 mark from last year, and October into November has the real chance to be panic-inducing for a fanbase that hasn't lost a ton of games in the last two years. Packers, Bears, Ravens, Browns, Bengals, Chiefs, Bucs, BYE, Vikings, Commanders, and Eagles is just a truly insane start. Those teams went a combined 105-65 last season, and if you take out the Browns and Bears it's an absurd 97-39... If they can escape that gauntlet at 7-4, they'll be in excellent shape to hit an on-ramp to finish the season against the Giants, Packers, Cowboys, Rams, Steelers, Vikings, and Bears.

I don't think it's even crazy to think they may come out of the first 11 weeks right around 0.500 and then finish the season 11-6 or 10-7 and be a wildcard team that absolutely no one wants to play.

Funny how there were strong rumors and beliefs that Hutch was gonna play in the SB if we made it and here we are in the end of May and he is just getting cleared for football activities.

They were good enough to win the Super Bowl in Week One last season. They ended the season with a full starting defense on IR that would have been one of the top 15 defenses in the NFL. Just a historically bad injury run that coincided with what was shaping up to be a historically good season for Hutch.

My biggest worry comes from the fear of injuries.  I don't care if they go 10-7 and have to go on the road for all of their playoff games, just let them be healthy for the run.

Got real good, got to the Finals, got swept

Then had the best record in NHL history,  lost in the WCF

And then it clicked the next year (after the March 26th incident)

 

I feel like the Lions are kind of on the same path.     I think they'll get to a Super Bowl.   Even if they have step back year this year, at some point in the next three years they will get there.     I feel like there's no way they can have that many injuries again.

I have a similar feeling.  Its not about predestination.  Its about having the right people in charge and process and this team appears to be doing all the necessary things to accomplish a championship.

So Brad Holmes and the Lions are going to make a Brendan Shanahan-like move for a top player in the league to get them over the top? Cool! Looking forward to Trey Hendrickson in Honolulu Blue and Silver.

When the Red Wings acquired Shanahan, there was salary cap and the Red Wings had one of the highest payrolls in the league. The Lions do not have that luxury.

Lions have enough goal scorers, they don’t need a Shanahan. If anything they need a Chelios across from Lindstrom.

You can't have over $60 million in edge rushers especially when one will be over 30. The Lions simply don't have the future cap space.

Apparently Anzalone wants a new contract and hasn't been showing up. He's one of those players I think the Lions have to let walk. He's a good player but he's over 30 now and the Lions have younger players they need to lock into long term deals. Cunningham seems like an insurance policy if Anzalone holds out.

that's too bad. I think he's become more than good, he's become an anchor out there for them. But its modern salary cap pro sports - a GM has to be balancing the marginal value of every $.
