Skubal is going to be a free agent.   He will not sign a contract with Detroit or any other team he gets traded to.  He's spoken about his business obligation.  The only way I see him signing before free agency is if he gets an absurd contract that's 20% above the current record for a P.  He knows he's in a position to set a new standard for free agent pitchers.

I don’t agree with that.  If they trade him this offseason, there will be at least one team in the NL who would do it for the long term. They would most likely have parameters of a deal worked out with Boras before consummating any trade with the Tigers.   If they were to wait until the deadline then yes the possibility exists of a rental deal that allows Skubal to hit the market and choose at the end of 2026.    Another reason for the Tigers to move him this offseason.

I think it's very unlikely that he signs with anyone before free agency.  Boras's clients almost always become free agents.

The other potential long shot possibility is to trade him for a max return in the offseason, and then go all in on signing him after next season.  Highly unlikely to happen, but if he’s going to test free agency regardless….that doesn’t necessarily have to mean that he wouldn’t still end up signing here if we give him the best offer.

CBA expires on Dec 1, 2026...I would guess that Skubal and a lot of free agents sign before that on the old rules. The nuclear winter lockout is coming.

I have a potentially fake piece of information that WCF Jr is part of a group that invested $2B in the Tigers...is this real?

I've never heard that.  Doesn't mean it isn't true but I'm not sure the family needs him.  How much are the Tigers even worth?  $2B would be a huge piece.

It was AI slop.  My apologies.

Good piece in the athletic today. As a Tiger fan there’s nothing to be optimistic about after reading this. The Mariners faced Skubal twice this year and beat him both times. In neither start did Skubal make it to the sixth inning. Seattle with home field advantage doesn’t help the cause either. But then…anything can happen. That the Tigers are where they are now, I’m happy with that.

So what changes to the roster for the next round?

hopefully Keith replaces Sweeney. Trey has no use when Baez is playing well and mckinstry can play ss in a pitch.

i would prefer Hanifee over kahnle.

Doubt Vierling would get the call.

Kevin McGo . . . Ahhhhh nevermind. It's too late anyways.

Bailey Horn is out of the option window. Would have been nice in the Cleveland series, but the Mariners aren't too lefty heavy, so I bet they keep him down. Sewald is probably the first pitcher to go, but I could see them adding a pitcher to get to 13 with a longer series and likely bullpen game in Game 1.

Hanifee pitched pretty well against Seattle, but his stuff has ticked down since they last faced him.

Kahnle's July implosion included two games against Seattle when he was absolutely roughed up. There may be something match-up wise that could point to a swap there, but if Kahnle has resolved the issues he had then, it is moot. Especially given the lineup turnover in that time. For example, a lot of the damage done by Mariners against Tarik Skubal was by Dylan Moore and Donovan Solano, who are no longer on the Mariners' roster.

For all the pitching around the Tigers have done to Jose Ramirez in the high-tension Cleveland games the past 400 days or so, I have to think Big Dumper gets double the treatment this week.

Bryan Woo's injury could be a big deal: looks like they are saving him til Game 3? That seems like quite the wild card.

Cal does have better players around him in the lineup, so it might not be quite that simple.

Unless Woo was deliberately being coy to throw us off, his post-session comments and tone yesterday didn’t strike me as someone who would be ready even by then.  More like Game 4 or 5 if necessary. But we will see.

We're going to have to make all the plays to win this

They,ll need to hit too.  It will hard to limit Seattle to one run per game.

It’s really irritating that game 3 is at 4:08pm on Tuesday.   There’s only 2 games that day.  Why can’t it be 6pm and 8:30?

Because they both are on the same network.  It’s what they paid for
