IdahoBert Posted Friday at 12:28 PM Posted Friday at 12:28 PM I’m suffering from pitching chaos fatigue. What is demanded of pitchers now blows their arms out. You can’t demand that they stop throwing so hard or throwing sliders. Expanding the roster so you have more relievers is a Band-Aid solution but I don’t know if there is any solution. Quote
Sports_Freak Posted Friday at 01:43 PM Posted Friday at 01:43 PM The Tigers have 5 starting pitchers, I don't understand BP days. Skubal, Flaherty, Mize, Montero and Long. Are we just using a BP arm today as a SP and then Montero? Quote
papalawrence Posted Friday at 02:00 PM Posted Friday at 02:00 PM It seems like more often managers try to avoid the dreaded third time through the line-up. It does take a toll on bullpen arms as the season wares on. Per Yankees fans, the reason they didn't match Kahnle's offer (and he openly stated he wanted to stay) was that his production historically drops off toward the end of the season. Quote

Probably for Montero and Gipson Long. Quote
1776 Posted Friday at 02:02 PM Posted Friday at 02:02 PM I saw an interesting comment earlier in another baseball forum. The topic was possible deadline moves. Be it deadline or not, the suggestion was Verlander to Detroit based on the loss of Jobe for the season. Verlander will be back in the SF rotation this week. The Giants have an abundance of starting pitching without Verlander. They literally are going to put one of their top pitching prospects (Kyle Harrison) back in the bullpen when Verlander comes back. Scott Harris has ties to SF and I don’t think it would take much at all to get Verlander. I thought it was an interesting take. Quote

One of the hot solutions of the past couple of years is to require pitchers go six innings minimum, unless the get hurt and come out after which they get put on the List. The thinking is that pitchers these days know they are coming out early for matchups anyway, so the incentive now is for them to maximize strikeouts, and they've acquire a reliever's mentality and come out flame-throwing from Pitch One. If they know they have to pace themselves for six innings, they won't throw so hard, and their arms and shoulders won't get so hurt. That's the thinking, anyway. Quote

oblong Posted Friday at 03:17 PM Posted Friday at 03:17 PM I would accept JV in a "what have we got to lose" scenario but I don't think I'd trade anything of value for him other than minor league filler... and by that... like one player. Quote
Tenacious D Posted Friday at 03:58 PM Posted Friday at 03:58 PM Pitching chaos works when your pen is good. Holton, Brieske (‘member him?) and Hanifee have regressed this season. Quote
RedTeamGo! Posted Friday at 04:00 PM Posted Friday at 04:00 PM Reds offense is very hit or miss. They usually do not fare well against bullpen games. My prediction? Tigers 5 Reds 1 Quote
IdahoBert Posted Friday at 04:08 PM Posted Friday at 04:08 PM I can’t see any practical reason aside from sentimentality to acquire JV. He’s been gone for eight years. That’s a lot of water under the bridge. I still have affection for the guy, but he doesn’t seem like one of our own anymore. But if he entered the Hall of Fame as an Astro, it would be very painful. A blank cap would be better and probably more appropriate. Quote
lordstanley Posted Friday at 04:21 PM Posted Friday at 04:21 PM This weekend is the 40th anniversary of my high school graduation. The Tigers were the defending World Series champions when I finished high school. To a high school senior graduating in this year's class of 2025, the year 1985 is as far back in the history books as 1945/the end of WWII was to my class when we graduated. That has nothing to do with tonight's game, but just wow, I think I need a moment. 1 Quote

Just initially, BP days or BP openers strike me on the face of it — which is often deceptive — as operating out of an admission of weakness rather than an affirmation of strength, but I know this is not logical and I need to get over it. It is in fact, very smart. Actually, what the Tigers are doing is like in the American Revolution where we at times wore down the British troops in something resembling guerrilla warfare by refusing to fight the enemy on their terms instead fought them on our own where these tactics were a part of a larger strategy. So BP days or openers are great. I just wish they weren’t necessary. Quote

Well, starters aren't allowed to pitch complete games any more so you may as well use the bullpen arms for the 1st few innings since they would normally pitch the 7th, 8th and 9th innings. Instead of blowing a late lead, see how many runs they give up to start the game and you have almost an entire game to catch up. It's how the better teams play .600 baseball...🤣🤣 1 Quote
gehringer_2 Posted Friday at 09:30 PM Posted Friday at 09:30 PM be interesting to see if how far they let Hurter go. He threw 44 pitches in 3 IP 3 days ago. I would think only one inning today. Quote
IdahoBert Posted Friday at 10:25 PM Posted Friday at 10:25 PM By the way, in case you’re into this kind of thing, the next time the Tigers are on Apple TV they will be playing the Mariners at home on July 11. 1 Quote
