Keith in, but Sweeney in? This organizations faith in Sweeney is unreal. ****ty defense and no bat? Sign me up.

kahnle over Sewald also questionable.

Yes Sweeney in over Malloy. Don’t understand it.

Very few lefthanders for Seattle compared to Cleveland,  not a need for 3rd RH bat off the bench especially one who doesn’t have a position.  Sweeney at least gives defensive substitution options

Keeping Sweeney on the roster is another example of the overemphasis on defensive flexibility within the organization.

I’m not saying flexibility isn’t important. It absolutely is, but I don’t believe it’s nearly as much as they treat it.

Odds are Malloy wouldn't have played especially since he can't play any position.  Ibanez and Jones are ahead of him against LH pitching and I think the Mariners have a total of 1 LH.

Fair enough.   Their lack of LHP is s definite advantage for AJ.  Doesn’t have to worry about them matching up against Keith, Carp, Greene, and McStink.  Gives him some nice options settting his batting order as well.

What is the scenario where we would need Sweeney as defensive replacement? Is there any situation where Baez would be pinch hit? And if so (say Keith doesn’t start for some strange reason),  mckinstry would play short and  we still have plenty of bench options to play 3rd or OF. Malloy pinch hitting seems less remote than needing Sweeney.

if only we had a good left handed batter available that could play short and 2B as a better option off the bench. One with great plate discipline to give a good late inning AB.

Also your daily reminder that trey Sweeney was 38th out of 38 shortstops in war, one of only two with negative war, and had an Wrc+ of 8 in the second half.

I think odds are very slim either plays, but more likely Sweeney gets on the field as a defensive replacement than we use 3 RH pinch hitters in any game this series.

Is their LH pitcher just a 1 inning kinda guy? Or is he a multiple innings pitcher?

Sweeney’s action might depend upon McKinstry or Baez ending up on the OF.  Maybe not likely, especially for Baez, but we’ll see.

Something like Ibanez pinch hits for Carpenter, McKinstry goes out to RF, Sweeney is around if needed?

Or could this be a case where he’s insurance if Keith aggravates his injury?

I’m no Danielle Bruce, but I am live and on the scene. There are NO Tigers fans here, not even behind our dugout. Ratio of around 5,000 to 7 by my count so far.
