But many stars are having off years, including Cal Raleigh, Fernando Tatis Jr, Bo Bichette, Alex Bregman, Mookie Betts, Willy Adames to name a few. Mookie is in a really interesting transition from outfielder to shortstop-outfielder to shortstop only, where he is a league leading defender who has devolved into an average bat. That’s still going to be worth three wins at this rate. Quote

Absolutely and the whole reason why this time I’m with the owners on some sort of cap system. Big markets just have so much of an advantage if they are willing to spend. In my opinion looking at this season I can’t say that illicit is being cheap. Also if I’m Harris I can’t have to many players that are on long contracts taking up 1/5th of what I think my owner will give me. Quote

I was just musing how smaller market/less successful teams typically have to overpay to get a “star” to come or stay there, whereas the players will generally take “lesser” deals in terms of years or options or trade clauses or whatever because that’s where they want to go to win or be in the big market or whatever Quote

OK. I doubt even the Dodgers offering six years could have swayed Vlad from re-signing with Toronto. For one thing, he's Canadian. For another, Toronto has been his home the whole time. For yet another, The Blue Jays is the ultimate big market team who are also the American League champs and it looked like the sky was the limit for them. And maybe it still is if they weren't so hurt. They may have still overpaid, but very few people in the Jays' orbit objected to it at the time. Quote

Bo Bichette seemed even more closely intertwined with the Toronto org and city. Vlad Jr has been respectful of Canada but seems to identify more closely with the Dominican Republic where he grew up and for whom he plays internationally. Quote

TBF, Chris doesn't own the Tigers exactly. The team is in a family Trust and Chris is the managing trustee. How much of any money going in and out is 'his' alone is a little more complicated than say Arte Moreno in SoCal. 1 Quote

I don’t think he will age well at all. If we are going to make a playoff run this year, it’ll be because the rest of the rotation continues to pitch well and the offense/bullpen step up—not because we have Skubal. Oh, I wouldn’t trade him if the Tigers make up some serious playoff ground unless some team offers too much to refuse. The playoffs are the goal and if there’s a reasonable chance at it with Skubal on the team, that’s the priority. 2 Quote

That reminded me of David Letterman's ongoing joke he had about Terry Forster who always kept 6'3" 200lb on his baseball cards, when in reality he was likely pushing 300. Mickey Lolich used to say he pitched better with extra weight. And didn't CC Sabathia lose some velo when he went keto? Quote

If Harris was a real G, he’d swing a three way trade where we send Skubal off, acquire a good offensive prospect and a top pitcher from a bad team like a Joe Ryan and have the team getting Skubal send off a haul of prospects to Minnesota and we can send off like an Anderson or a Yost to Minnesota as well. Then we get something for Skubal, sure up our rotation for a while with better cost control, and upgrade our depth offensively. Edited July 6 by monkeytargets39 Quote
Tiger337 Posted July 6 Posted July 6 I had a dream that the Tigers made a 6-player deal with the Cubs. Jansen went to the Cubs and the Tigers got one of the Cubs relievers and a right-handed platoon guy. I don't remember the other players, but I remember thinking it was pretty good for the Tigers. Harris was interviewed and he said something about controlling the strike zone on both sides of the ball. Quote

I've watched some Cubs games and their announcers say all their problems are because of pitching. Major amount of injuries. They would prolly love Vest 😆😆 Quote
